Down a path, removed from the traffic that often polutes North Lane in Headingley, and away from the many Otley Runners making their way to the Headingley Taps, sits Brett's. A traditional fish and chip restaurant, its 'dollshouse' appearance really does redeem what would otherwise be a bit of a grim part of Headingley. Brett's has a main restaurant, seving up outstanding quality fish and chips, in an idyllic old fashioned oak panneled setting. A classy spin on an old favourite. I have to admit, I have never actually eaten in the restaurant itself, but oh! How I long to. What I have done though, is queue up outside their 'fast food area'. To the right of the warm, delightful-looking restaurant, they have a fish bar, ideal for passers-by, serving up all the chippy favourites. There is a miniture seating area, though beware, it is barely used due to the queues getting pretty long in the evenings. It is a brilliant touch, enabling their fish and chips to be sampled by anyone, including those who don't have the time to sit down to a slap-up meal. This is a very good thing! The food is fantastic, those 'chief fryers' know how it's done! I highly recommend Brett's as a fish bar, and cannot wait to go to the main restaurant.

So, it's about time I wrote my review for Crafthouse, being as I went a while ago, and haven't yet…read moreshared my thoughts. I was going to meet a friend for lunch, and we took advantage of their lunch time deal, saving a few pennies. Now, bear in mind that you're saving little compared to other lunch deals, but that the extra cost does assure you this: the food is great. I don't know what else to say, although if you've read my reviews before, you'll know there's always more to elaborate on. I chose the roast chicken, being as I can't resist a Sunday lunch, and for dessert the creme brûlée. The chicken came in the most delightful pot, and the leg portion was more than enough for lunch. It felt like I was basically having an evening meal, which is no bad thing. We had ordered some side veg, that had been steamed and buttered with finesse, as much as you might consider veg to be cooked with flair. The leg came complete with the gravy of goddess, and couldn't have been cooked better in my humblest opinion. It was juicy, tender, and was finished off with a crispy bit of skin. I'm getting hungry just thinking about it, and I rarely find chicken interesting enough to ponder. The creme brûlée was probably one of the nicest I've had. Not overly creamy, not sugary. A perfect balance. As for the ambience, well. I guess this would depend on your preference. I can't deny there's an air of exclusivity, and not least due to the prices. That being said, I'd encourage a visit for several reasons. As a treat it's fabulous, and I can tell you now, I've walked in wearing jeans and had no comment. Not even a look. The staff are all lovely, and the view is, naturally, totally glorious as well. Locally sourced menu, beautifully presented, and super tasty. Job's a good 'un!

We ordered the set menu which was £23 for three courses and just under £20 for two. Personally I…read morethought this was really great value for money. This set menu was very good and the staff super friendly and quick. The firsts thing you'll notice when you look at the menu is that every dish has tons of ingredients. That's because it's all meticulously arranged and the very delicate. The food isn't outstanding but very enjoyable. We also ordered a bottle of Rioja which was nice and not too expensive (about £30). Although we didn't get one, there's tons of tables and seats by the window which means you get a beautiful view of central Leeds. I would come back and recommend it.

Tried something new last night and was well impressed with our decision…read more Again, taking advantage of a 'livingsocial' voucher which always encourages me to try something for a taster and see if I would pay full price- on this occasion, just that happened. We booked in for 6pm but due to the awful weather I didn't get there until 6.20 but my Mr was having a beer and chilling in the very calming 'bar' area. The entrance is a bit daunting and the door needs a firm hand to open but then you are transported into a Japanese paradise! Across the bridge you go, beautiful fish swimming underneath, to be greeted by a very 'traditional' waitress and seated for drinks. The drinks menu is ok, couple of beers and a wine list and also spirits etc so something for everyone. We had a few minutes to browse the menu before they came to take our order. I'm glad we were limited to the 'early bird' choice with the voucher we had as I was over faced with the choice available and would have taken ages to choose had I had to use the full menu! We were seated around the table and waited for our starters - Zensai - A mixture of Japanese Appetisers Yasai Tempura - Vegetables Both dishes were well presented, nice and hot and a pleasure to eat! We polished them off quite quickly. The vege tempura was lovely and light and we had a nice selection of mini Japanese nibbles on the 'Zensai'. We then had another couple come and be seated right next to us which we found a bit strange! They also were then served their starters. Another couple then were sat opposite us which added to our confusion a little more but then the neighbouring couple filled us in! This is the traditional seating pattern of Japanese, all sit together no matter who & around one table/hot plate to all enjoy the show! Ahhh, I get it now! Maybe I should have done more thorough research! The third couple got their starters which the 'hostess' attended to more drinks for us and the chef set up for his 'show'. We were then treated to a very entertaining dining experience while our main courses were cooked. A dazzling array of skills with the cooking utensils and a flash of fire! We had chosen- Fillet of Beef with Oriental Mushrooms & Chicken Teriyaki with leeks but all the food was cooked on the one hot plate- even the other couples fish which I wasn't overly impressed with as I'm not a big fish fan. The beef was lovely and tender and the only criticism we'd have was there didn't appear to be a lot! The chicken was also very tender and a slightly bigger portion! Even though we thought there wasn't enough, by the time we had ate the fried rice and stir fried veg we were too stuffed to even consider the dessert. As we had somewhere to be we paid quickly and rushed out- a shame really but totally our own fault- we should have allowed longer to appreciate the experience. This place is very entertaining and the food is super Very fresh and filling and totally worth a return visit. Best to go with more than 2 to make the most of the 'experience'.

Mind-blowingly good, wallet-achingly expensive Japanese food-theatre…read more After trawling through reviews for dinner in Leeds we finally stumbled upon Teppanyaki where we could use our taste card to good effect. Our table was booked for 9, they took our food and drinks orders whilst we waited, our attention distracted briefly from our rumbling stomachs by the koi carp pond. We had to wait about half an hour until we were seated, but goodness was it worth the wait! The starter of beef sashimi was melt-in-the-mouth tender and served with a tasty dipping sauce, absolutely faultless! Appetites truly whetted, the real drama begins. The chef enters centre stage and proceeds to prepare our meals and six others with a pyrotechnic display of culinary stagecraft. Dazzled by the bright lights and flashing knives, I had King prawns and jumbo scallops in a Tokyo butter, which is as exciting and delicious as it sounds. Just one star off for the long wait and for priceyness (even with the taste card). This is Japanese food-wizardry at its finest!

I admit, I discovered Zizzi because Las Iguanas next door was fully-booked. I am, however, quite…read moreglad that I did. Zizzi is a mid-range Italian restaurant tucked just behind the Corn Exchange. The first thing that strikes you as you walk in is an atmosphere of gentle resplendence. While not too over the top, it quietly lets you know that a lot of time and thought has gone into the slightly plush, modern furnishings. My favourite part of all that is the chopped wood adorning one of the walls. It doesn't have even the ghost of an appearance of practicality, but it does a fine old job of hinting that the place has a rustic touch, despite its otherwise contemporary feel. The menu offers what you'd expect from an Italian - plenty of pasta, plenty of pizza, all cooked well from the reassuringly-open kitchen. Touches such as presenting the garlic bread on what looks a lot like a smoothed cross-section of a small tree make you feel well looked after (although the desserts, which I didn't try, looked a bit on the fiddly side). One of the striking things about Zizzi is how young the crowd in there seems to be. It's not something you particularly expect from a restaurant outside a student area (restaurants mostly denying any age bias), but I suppose the proximity to Call Lane and the lively atmosphere draws all the twenty-somethings to the place. The young, friendly staff certainly helps, too. Price-wise there are cheaper places to eat, but not by much. Mains typically cost around £10. Zizzi is worth taking a look, even if Las Iguanas has tables going spare!

Went with friends visiting Leeds, at their request last night…read more A table had been booked so we were seated quickly & there was no queue however I wasn't really pleased to be sat in the very squashed corner which was quite chilly also! The place was busy-ish which was surprising for a Tuesday but there was also plenty of other tables we could have had. The service wasn't slow as such but it wasn't exactly quick either and the waitress looked most put out that we asked to order the food when she clearly only wanted to take our drinks orders! And she asked if we wanted red or white Pinot Grigio!!! (bit of staff training needed here on knowledge of the menu!) The bread and olive starter was 'average' really and again, took a bit longer than we liked to be served for something so simple. We had a bit of a trauma after this with my friends dog so they had to leave and the Restaurant seemed quite accommodating when we asked for our food to go. This took 40 minutes to arrange though which was a total joke as prior to the request to do this we had been sat with the starter finished for 15 minutes! Unfortunately, after the 5 minute taxi journey from Zizzi to Clarence dock, we opened the food to not only discover it was cold, but 2 of the dishes provided were not what we ordered. Having already paid the £92 bill and having left the restaurant, we couldn't have gone back to complain but believe me- I won't be going back! I have dined in other Zizzi locations before and have never been blown away by the food but it on this occasion I'm pretty disgusted that they seem to been slipping from even the most standard of standards! They need top relying on the 'Brand' reputation and actually make an effort both to provide the service and food that should be 2nd nature. It's not exactly cheap so I would expect better.
