I have mixed feelings about our experience here. We had never been, just drove past on our way somewhere else and decided that it would be a fun place to try. We walked in and entered the room with all of the bottles for sale. I asked where they do tastings and the staff told us that is in the next room over. When we went in, I asked what we needed to do in order to taste. (there are large signs at the "bar" area that they do not do tastings at the bar). We were greeted with a "go over to one of the tables" but kind of with an attitude like we should have known better to just go over to a table instead of asking a question. Once we did visit a table, there is a list of wines on a paper and pens. You can taste as many as you want, but can only sample four at a time. Samples are 50 cents each. I enjoyed some of the dryer reds, but wasn't a fan of certain specialty ones (the dandelion one really intrigued me but both my husband and I disliked it). The person doing the sampling the day we were there didn't seem to like the fact that I was asking questions about the wine and the winery. There was a definite attitude. Maybe it is because we weren't regulars or seemed like we wouldn't buy or something. But it was definitely off putting. The staff in the front room were definitely much friendlier and accommodating. Overall, a fun stop, but not one I'd rush back to next time I'm in the area. read more

Good wine, okay... service! We went in on a Saturday in February for a wine tasting, some wine, and pizza. The set up of the building is a little confusing. They have a room for "take out/ food" and then a room for tastings, and more rooms with just tables. Then an outside barn area, they had live music out there, and outside bathrooms. The wine was good. I sampled 4 dry red wines and my husband sampled some of the semi- sweet wines. We then got a glass/ bottle and ordered pizza then went to the barn. We waited almost an entire hour for a subpar small pizza priced at $14 at 6:30ish. The wine lady said they would be open until 7 for wines as we went up to buy a couple bottle before we left the lights were off and doors were unlocked but no one inside so wasn't able to buy a bottle. More thoughts needs to go into The barn space, a nice rustic "venue" but the thought into running a smooth winery just wasn't there that night. read more

They have a nice deli with charcuterie type meats and cheeses. Tastings are only 50 cents each. I tried their petite Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Festival and Blueberry wines. All were awesome but the Festival really stood out !! Pleasant prompt service. Tastings were in small plastic shot glasses. read more

There's a little gem hidden in the heart of Ohio on the outskirts of Amish country. Breitenbach has something for EVERYONE! They have a wide selection of sweet fruit wines (Raspberry, BlackBerry, Dandelion), a wide variety of both sweeter (Riesling, Gewürztraminer, Chardonnay) and dry (Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon) traditional varietals. BUT... don't forget the 4barrel Tawny Port or the Solara Cream Sherry!! They offer AFFORDABLE tastings in their main shop, they have a wide selection of meats & cheeses for sandwiches and usually a food truck on the patio where they have live music. Back to the wine: it's affordable and GOOD! I salute their winemaker for doing such an impressive job on ALL of their wines. I highly recommend stopping in if you're in the area... We had a great experience doing a wine tasting here. Samples are a quarter each and there's basically no limit. They are small. Enough to get an idea of the taste without really having to be invested in the selections you are making. You can try just about all of the wines. The only problem was, I just didn't care much for the wines. You also aren't allowed to eat in the tasting area. I get that it would probably be messy, since they aren't really cleaning the tables between guests. But it gets hard to distinguish all those flavors when you can't cleanse your palette. I'm not sure if that is the reason I didn't like the wines or not. They also have a lot of wine-related gifts and snacks you can buy. read more

I really can't speak to the quality of the wine unless you like fruit wines. But this is really a beautiful and fun place. The cafe has an enjoyable selection and both outdoor and indoor seating has great views. We have been to a hundred wineries in the US and Europe and this is our favorite. We live an hour away for six months out of the year but we will still try to make four or five visits each year. read more

First time here. Very nice, a lot of windows to enjoy the view. They have a very large patio . If you wanted to do the wine tasting it had to be at a very small table with no chairs . Located a short distance from Troyer's Amish Tours, nestled among the rolling hills of Ohio's Amish countryside, Der Marktplaz, is home of Breitenbach Wine Cellars. Breitenbach produces an array of extensive award-winning grape, fresh fruit, and berry wines, and what they are most known for, Dandelion wine. They produce 40 varieties of grape and fruit wines resulting in about 150,000 gallons. WOOOOW! That's a lot of wine, but hey someone must make it for us wine lovers. What I love is that they grow their own grapes and make their wine on site. What really caught my attention was the purple "Winemakers Barn". It was so cute! While I did not go inside, the outside was enough to make me say how cool. I am not sure about you but I love a good snack like cheese or a charcuterie board while drinking wine. When you walk in, there is a cheese section along with all the wine to purchase. After this is the sampling area! They have plenty of flavors to choose from and man did I indulge. They also have a great tasting offer. You can sample 4 wines for $1.00. I ended up sampling 12 wines. I am a sweet wine drinker so I did not try any of the dry wines. I also like fruit wines and they have 15 flavors to choose from. I grabbed a cheese and cracker plate and enjoyed my wine tasting. I enjoyed the hospitality Breitenbach shared and enjoyed the wine they offer. They are doing some amazing wine making! Also, make sure to try the Dandelion wine. It is unique! By the time wine tasting ended, I left with 5 bottles of wine and 2 candles. What can I say, I am a girl who loves her wine and candles! My wife and I took a day trip for some wine and music. This place never disappoints. They make great wine and have such a beautiful winery and venue. The food is good also. Especially the pizza. We met some wonderful people while sitting on the patio listening to love music and enjoying some wine. Later in the evening we went to their other venue up by the vineyard and enjoyed more music, wine and sunset. They often have live music, tastings and also offer private venue events in one of their many structures on the property. There is even a amphitheater. Great place in the heart of Amish country. Breitenbach Wine Cellars is situated north of Columbus in the rolling Hills of Amish Country. It is first and foremost a winery, but is also an Amish Country store, cafe and bed & breakfast inn. They make their own wine (some award-winning) on site, including, blush, red, white and fruit wines. The retail shop is expansive, carrying a great selection of holiday gift boxes and wine accessories, as well as a variety of Amish cheeses, meats, local produce, and specialty food items, including one of my favorites- Stonewall Kitchens. Summertime brings an outdoor "back porch" BBQ on weekends. Breitenbach is well-known for its weekend long Dandelion Festival and wine, of which I'm not a fan of, but the festival is fun. It takes place in early May and includes musical entertainment, cooking competitions and of course, dandelion wine. I give Breitenbach Wine Cellars four stars primarily for the experience and not so much the wine, which really isn't all that bad. The setting of this Amish country store & winery is absolutely beautiful and well worth the drive- especially on a balmy summer day. Once a year, we really enjoy going to Bretienbach to grab a bottle of wine, some cheese and crackers and just park ourselves on the porch to admire the scenery. read more

Stopped while in the area. We have had their wines in the past and always enjoyed them, figured while we down there we would stop at the winery. It was a cute place, the staff was friendly. We sampled some wine and purchased 2 bottles. The only complaint my husband and I had was there should have been at least 1 other person in the tasting room. One for the sample side and the other for those purchasing wine to drink there or glasses of wine. The waitress was overwhelmed, she was fabulous and very nice and it wasn't her just being slow. Have stopped here many times over the years and have seen the winery grow substantially. But with the growth has come a big increase in their prices. Half a dozen over the 20 $ mark. We were on the hunt for a winery I saw advertised online in Amish Country and came across this gem along the way. It was the cutest little winery. We decided to stop and get a few samples so we could see what we like before we made purchases. I have never seen wineries before in Amish Country so it was something different for us to do while on our trip here. They had the nicest little outdoor seating area. My wife enjoyed the roadhouse red. We purchased a bottle. We ate a pizza here. It was good and I enjoyed a glass off the spiced apple. It was great for dinner. We met a minister performing a wedding. My hubby and I stopped here during our visit to Ohio's Amish country this past weekend. The venus is gorgeous with both inside and outside seating to enjoy a bottle of wine or some food from the littlr cafe. Everyone working here was extremely friendly and struck up a conversation with us. We prefer sweet wines and they have a nice mix of red and white, plus fruit wines, for us to sample. We had a hard time choosing just one to include with our lunch. We decided on the 3 berry blend then brought home the first crush and roadhouse red. For lunch we shared a margarita pizza which was wood fired but a thick crust. The slices of tomato were huge and the cheese was plentiful. It was the perfect size for us to split as a small lunch. They have one of the most amazing flavor wines out there. If you have never tasted or heard of dandelion wine now is the time to go and get it they have a dandelion Festival that I really want to go to and plan on going to next year. We were able to listen to music have fire oven pizza and drink our wine while looking at beautiful scenery and listening to wonderful music if you're in the area I'm looking for a winery to go to in Ohio this is the place I don't know of any other places that sell dandelion wine but I always buy more than one it has a very sweet taste to it and very inexpensive. read more

As Ohio winery experiences go, Breitenbach is in the average category. The wines are below average, the place is small, the tasting is usually rather curt but the store and surrounding area is charming. It is a great escape on a spring weekend; for the ride, a little buzz and the beauty of Amish country. As wine is so very much about personal taste, I'll refrain from details on the different varieties, but will say that their sweet wines are their best in my opinion. The Frost Fire is a good dessert wine. Also note that there is a burgeoning wine industry in the Sugarcreek area, with Swiss Heritage (just a little west on Old OH-39) and Silver Moon (just a little east on Old OH-39) are two that are close by. The grounds are gorgeous and there's major drive up curb appeal. Cute store inside, live music outside and plenty of outdoor seating. The actual tasting room was a disaster though. A woman who I think really dislikes working there yelled at everyone to pick tables and call out what wines they want to her. It was very disorganized and customers weren't clear on where to go, how to order or how to pay. You pay 25 cents for a tiny plastic shot glass, which isn't bad, and you just choose from a menu on the table. I'm from Napa where we do tastings from white, to red, to desserts. So we did just that. The woman working scolded us from across the room that we were doing it wrong and should be tasting red to white. People were staring and I said it doesn't really matter, we are just here to have a good time! I didn't want to have a confrontation with someone who clearly doesn't know how to wine taste or be hospitable. We threw $5 in the fishbowl (cuz that's how you pay for your tasting) and left. We didn't purchase any wines from there. They weren't the greatest, way too sweet actually, and tasted like Robitussin, but had she been nicer we probably would've bought some to take back to our family in Napa to try midwestern wine. read more

It is in a beautiful location surrounded by rolling hills and farm land. The inside offers a HUGE variety of wines to taste and they also sell local meats and cheeses from the area. They're known for the dandelion wine, and it is 100% SPECTACULAR! I recently found out that they offer online ordering which is a game changer. They have a small cafe that is also fantastic, the winter salad is my personal favorite. The Cellars does an outdoor event thing during the summer months where they have bands and outdoor food. Next time I go I would love to take a tour to see how they make the wine! I think that this has to be my favorite winery of all time and it is in a great place. read more

This is a really beautiful location and I am partial to it, because I remember when It was build as a child. I stopped out here recently and had a nice visit overall. The wine tasting was awesome. All of their wines are very unique and most are delicious. The view here is peaceful and calming. There is indoor seating and outdoor. There is also a gift shop inside. The staff is not really the greatest. I found most of them to be a little rude, which is unfortunate. My four stars come from the wine, the atmosphere and the childhood memories. I'm a sucker for nostalgia. I would definitely come back and buy some wine to go and maybe take a nice walk around the property. read more

The back patio space at this place is awesome. I've bought their wine at my local Giant Eagle but have never been in person until my most recent trip to Amish country. I'm a big rosé fan and theirs was a bit more dry than most, not what you'd expect from a typical rosé. We capped that bottle after a glass each and then got a bottle of blueberry which was much better without being overly fruity or too sweet. I was intrigued by the dandelion wine and want to try that in the future! I liked how they had crackers and pre cut cheese you could buy for cheap to have with your wine. Lots of wineries have one or two charcuterie options for at least $10 so buying a $2 bag of cheese cubes to have with it was perfect. We thought it was strange they closed so early--6 pm on a Friday night. We realized people were leaving and then looked up their hours and were surprised. Seems like you'd lose a lot of prime business that way. But we loved the place and the little store inside! read more

I have to totally agree with Courtney S. above. We are locals and went to have lunch there on Friday. As we were looking at the menu on the wall the nasty - no personality hostess said if you are going to order food it is going to take 50 min to an hour. Of course, we wanted to order food it was lunch time and we were at the Cafe! (All they have are salads, sandwiches and pizzas) So my girlfriend said to the hostess "why does it take 50 min to an hour to get a salad?" The hostess said if you don't want to order anything don't. I have had another run in with this person (hostess) almost a year ago. First, this hostess should NOT work in any customer related business and Second, if the winery is going to serve lunch they MUST somehow get the food ready quicker. You have lost our business. So we left there and went to Gavins on the square in New Philadelphia and could not have been treated nicer - maybe they ought to send the hostess from Breitenbach there for CUSTOMER SERVICE TRAINING!!! read more

We stopped at Breitenbach when we were in the area visiting family. We visited 4 area wineries that day. It was a Saturday evening in June and the place was packed! Parking is limited at the winery but the grounds are beautiful. Inside is a jumble of confusion. The front room houses a deli counter and a large assortment of Amish goodies. The line for the deli/cheese counter extended into the next room. The second room was filled with bottles of wine and a small counter where more patrons were waiting in line. It turned out that THIS was the tasting counter. Four people may be able to taste wines at this counter comfortably. We moved as close to the counter as possible (given the large crowd) and I requested our tastings between peoples' shoulders. I had flashbacks of being at a bar in college where shouting my drink order was necessary and "personal space" was overrated. The staff appeared not to know or care anything about the wine or the history of the establishment. The ambience of the place is truly tourist-kitsch. My BF saw patrons eating outside but there appeared to be no obvious place to order or collect food. We LOVED the dandelion wine and brought a bottle home. While waiting to pay for our wine (stranded in the endless line we navigated around on the way in) my BF picked up some beef sticks. A large SUV was vulturizing the parking lot waiting for a space when we left - unfortunately it was blocking 3 parking stalls and causing a traffic headache. If you're hoping to learn something about the family, history or wine - I have heard there's a winery tour available. This winery does not offer the relaxed, welcome atmosphere that other wineries offer. read more
