BreastLink changed my life for the better. My regular, internal medicine doctor helped me find breast cancer through a bilateral ultrasound. She then recommended BreastLink. I started off my care at BreastLink and continued with it as I interviewed other breast cancer centers. Although I visited other top breast care centers, I stayed with BreastLink. It was the ONLY place that ministered to my emotional needs though the way my doctors, nurses and technicians treated me. Plus, my surgeon, Dr. West, is known to be technically superb. He also treated me, as a scared 37 year old, with extreme kindness. He told me, "I will treat you like my own daughter." There are no words for the preciousness of being treated with kindness and compassion by your doctors as you face cancer. Secondly, I found Dr. Link at BreastLink, and decided to choose him for my oncologist after interviewing another oncologist outside BreastLink. I learned that Dr. Link, like Dr. West, is also known to be a top-notch doctor. He is author of one of the most widely read books on breast cancer for newly diagnosed women, called "The Breast Cancer Survival Manual." This is a very helpful, comprehensive book on breast cancer that I would recommend to all. He continues to update this book, and it is currently in the fifth edition. His other, older book is called "Take Charge of Your Breast Cancer." Though this book is older and no longer updated, it completely changed my view of my disease by giving me hope. It helped me emotionally. It talks about Dr. Link's history as a doctor and his thoughts that are in his "heart and soul" about the disease. It gave me hope that, no matter what, you continue to make the most out of your life after cancer. He shares that nearly 90% of women are ultimately cured of breast cancer, so after treatment you should take the mindset that you are cured and carry on. This book helped me have the emotional "tools" to deal with my diagnosis. I was so blessed to read it right after my surgery. Dr. Link's gentleness and kindness to me in the office have been so emotionally healing. The wonderful care of Dr. West and Dr. Link to their patients are also reflected by all I've come across with at BreastLink--the front desk, the physician assistants, the nurses, and the technicians associated with BreastLink. My cancer experience would have been entirely different if I had not gone to BreastLink.
BreastLink did the Mammaprint test on my tumor after surgery to determine that I did not need chemo. They later did the Breast Cancer Index test, a new test, on my tumor to determine that I did not need hormonal therapy (Tamoxifen). Surely, I am happier and healthier because of this expert knowledge that helped me at BreastLink.
I see some of the comments about scheduling difficulties or waits. We have to keep in mind that much of these waits are because serious cases of cancer are being dealt with, and the amazing doctors are spending the time needed to give the best care necessary. I was one of those cases once, when they didn't know if my cancer was aggressive or not, and they started speeding me through tests to get an answer. I am sure my care at that time caused some delays for others. Now that I am OK, when I have my appointments at BreastLink and run into a delay, I understand that another woman is getting the help she needs. Sure, maybe there's a possibility for improvements in scheduling...but cancer cases simply need time. In my opinion, Dr. West and Dr. Link are the best doctors ever, and the only doctors I would send my family and friends if they were to get breast cancer like me. Every person I have met at BreastLink is a hero--kind, skilled and caring. They have patient care as their top priority, and you will not find more intelligent, committed, devoted and compassionate doctors anywhere else. As a stage 1, one-year breast cancer survivor, I thank God for BreastLink every single day. They are family to me. read more
