Also, I was impressed with the detailed daily and hourly medication and exercise schedule, and noted Dr. Marumoto's staff coordination for an at-home physical therapy session 2 days after surgery. Wow! I didn't expect to have an at-home visit. Still, I understood the importance of starting rehabilitation exercises as soon as possible after surgery to promote mobility and prevent scar tissue growth. Four days before my Friday surgery day, I received a phone message from physical therapist Michael Maresca, owner of Maresca Physical Therapy. I scheduled him to teach me mobility (knee bending and straightening) and strengthening home exercises, assess our living space, and fit the height of walking assistance equipment (a walker and a cane I borrowed from my eldest sister, who underwent foot surgery last year). I was astonished that Michael put me on his schedule on Sunday morning, as I thought physician or specialist house calls were a thing of the past. Because I hadn't explained our condominium's exact location and parking garage procedures, Michael and I exchanged phone messages on Sunday, which delayed his arrival. However, once he met with my husband in the lobby of our building and entered our unit, I found Michael to be professional, well-mannered, and friendly. He was easy to talk to and seemed surprised that I was in good spirits and could stand, walk, and sit comfortably even after being "fresh out of surgery." I told him that I was concerned about not developing scar tissue because I wouldn't want to have to redo this surgery and wanted to return to regular daily exercises and functioning as soon as possible. Besides, according to Dr. Marumoto's office's medication and exercise schedule, I'd diligently exercise every 2 hours indoors, and I don't want to become a vampire afraid of the sunlight. Before Michael left, he reviewed the seven exercises he had taught me and provided a pictorial chart with instructions. He was also encouraging and fostered a positive and healing attitude. I made sure to perform the exercises to prepare for and incorporate them with my upcoming physical appointments at JACO Rehab Center, which followed this house call three days later.

I had lower back and shoulder pain from someone falling on me and absorbing all of their weight on my back and head. The other person who was a little younger, but heavier than I was; walked away with no pain :) Unfortunately, for me, I landed on the floor on my knees and hands braced on the ground while carrying another person. The back of this person's head hit the back of mine. I was referred to Queen's Outpatient Rehabilitation Center for my Physical Therapy by the Doctors at Queen's Island Urgent Care. Motoki was very meticulous in my exercises. He was very helpful. We developed a daily routine of exercises I would do at the Outpatient Rehab Center then I would do those exercises and incorporate them into my daily routine at home. We meet twice a week. And he is the best!!

As an athlete this changed my life, I went from being super active to not being able to walk. The staff at Chart was fantastic, gave me realistic goals, and helped me in every way. In January it will be two years since my injury. I can now hike 5 miles (just did that yesterday), walk 10 miles in a city (I did it in Paris this Fall), practice intermediate yoga, do pilates, go up and down stairs without pain or assistance, and swim. Yes, it was hard and lots of sweat and tears, and Chart Rehab showed me the way through their exercise program which I followed religiously, and still do the balance exercises. I am almost ready to go back to Stand up paddling! I recommend them highly. It was through the physical AND massage therapy that I was able to get my life back. I called a few places, but their availability was a week out! What? I can't live like this for a week!! Looking up other Dr's. who service ChiroPlan members, I found Dr. Watanabe at McCully Chiropractic Center. I called, and he answered with a friendly "Hello?". Thinking I had the wrong number, I asked if this was the Chiropractor's office. He said it was, and I proceeded to ask if he was taking new patients. He said he was, but that he was closed today. "But I have to go into the office to pick up my mail, if you wanna meet me there..." Say what? A Dr. who will come in on a day off to treat a new patient? Now that's a great Dr.! That's just one of the many ways how he cares for his patients... Dr. Watanabe's m.o. is not to crack you and send you out the door. He takes time to understand the root of the problem you are having, giving you a short massage to loosen up the muscles before the adjustment. His office is not a chiropractic processing center. He takes quality time to know what your problem is and explains how the treatment process is going to be and what you can expect. I've been to other DCs with impressive offices pretty receptionists, etc...., you not going to find that at McCully Chiropractic Center. Dr. Watanabe's practice is no frills, "down to earth," he answers or returns all calls. Some other places you will pay more, but you might not get what you pay for. With Dr. Watanabe you always going get more than what you pay and he is very reasonable price wise. I am just so very thankful that I have a medical plan that provides for chiropractic visit. But mostly it's because of Dr. Watanabe that I continue regular adjustment visits. He is my "ounce of prevention". I can also always count on him to take me in for an immediate treatment when needed. My cargo job is physical and sometimes I'm in need of a "quick fix". I can always count on Dr. Watanabe to be there for me.

Dr. Dean Yoshimoto is AMAZING!!!…read more My mom has been suffering from extreme knee pain for some time now, and even seeing a sports medicine doctor and physical therapists back at home in Chicago, nothing was working - the pain was still there, if not more so, and there was never a clear answer or a treatment plan that was offered by any of the specialists. Here comes Dr. Yoshimoto, who literally decreased my mom's knee pain by 90% after 1 visit. Yes, you heard that right - 90%!!! He was extremely patient, kind, and really broke it down in terms of pinpointing what exactly was going on, what treatment was needed, and what exercises to do at home. He was so shocked and was left speechless that my mom was dealing with inept individuals all this time - clowns, I tell you! Unbelievable. You can tell that Dr. Yoshimoto genuinely cares for each of his patients. He's not the typical physical therapist who gives you some stretches to do, hooks you up to a muscle stimulating machine, and/or gives you a head pad and calls it a day. He actually tries to target the source of pain! I am so grateful that I was able to find him for my mom, and I was actually kind of serious when I told her that maybe she should consider moving to HI permanently, just for him.
