I was experiencing pain in both my hip and shoulder while training at the gym. I'd been trying to work around it but the pain persisted. I looked around for physical therapists and decided on Holisticare because of their unique approach that combines both eastern and western techniques. After the initial consultation, Dr. Chang was able to diagnose my specific issues. I really appreciated his honesty while explaining to me my options for treatment. He told me straight up that my hip issue was most likely due to a genetic factor and even with some recommended stretches and exercises the likelihood of improvement was minimal. My shoulder on the other hand was completely treatable and he reassured me that with proper care it would have its mobility restored. Dr. Chang created a profile for me and my recovery. All the exercises and stretches are stored online so it was really easy to access them outside of the office. They come with video demonstrations so you don't have to stress about remembering every detail during the visit. It made the treatment process really easy and convenient for me. I had a wonderful experience with Dr. Chang and his team at HolistiCare Physical Therapy. He is extremely knowledgeable, takes time to listen to patient concerns, and really understands the human body. I saw Dr. Chang for chronic pain in my neck and left knee. He saw several things related to my posture, alignment and exercise mechanics that were actually contributing to my pain. Over five weeks, he and his team taught me proper alignment and mechanics and provided various stretching and weightlifting exercises that significantly improved my posture, strength and flexibility and reduced my pain. They also performed Chinese cupping, deep tissue massage, and gua sha, which provided further pain relief. Dr. Chang really took the time to get to know me and the activities that are important to me. I'm an avid golfer and he asked me to bring a golf club to one session to evaluate my form and body mechanics during my swing. Dr. Jason Chang is the best physical therapist I have ever worked with. I began doing physical therapy with him 3 years ago after a car accident which left me with bad neck pain. I also have bulging discs on multiple levels, which left me in constant pain before I started going to Dr. Chang. He focuses on building strength to support the joints, which was the catalyst for diminishing my pain. When I first went to Dr. Chang, I had sciatica and and sacroiliac pain. He crafted exercises during our sessions that helped me build the necessary strength to support my SI joints and vertebrae, while teaching technique to prevent further pain or strain. I was having neck and back problems after a fall and decided to go to Holisticare based on the information I found on their website. They use a combination of eastern and western medicine in their practice. Dr. Chang and Carlo were great! Within a few weeks my neck was practically back to normal and is now feeling great. We then started therapy on my lower back and it started to get better after receiving a few treatments from them as well. Covid 19 got worse and the numbers started to skyrocket so I decided to postpone treatment until Hawaii's new cases dropped. While I was at home I continued the exercises and stretches they showed me and within a few more weeks my back was back to how it was before my accident. I started seeing Dr. Chang at HolistiCare for a bulging disc in my lower back - an entirely new and painful experience for me. I was quickly clear how knowledgeable, professional, courteous and collaborative Dr. Chang is. We incorporated Pilates reformer work, floor work and TRX exercises. I was thrilled with the results. Shortly after seeing Dr. Chang for my back, I required post-op physical therapy for an unrelated shoulder injury. I had a SLAP tear repaired and insisted that my surgeon allow me to see Dr. Chang for my recovery needs. Again, I was impressed with his knowledge and professionalism, as was my surgeon. After 5 months, 3 chiropractors, 16 visits, my pain started from right scapula, to lower back, then carpal tunnel, and escalated to a point where doing the simplest thing, like holding a pen, beating an egg, became cumbersome and challenging. With fear that it'd become chronic, I went to see my physician - he recommended physical therapy with Dr. Chang. His clinic has open space and private rooms, all clutter free (if you have clutter-phobia and prefer a quiet and neat area). His manners are super modest, professional and efficient, meaning no nosy questions, no perfunctory responses, no irrelevant chitchatting, no sales pitch. My swollen fingers went back to normal after 2 weeks and neck regained normal range of motion after 3 weeks. I was totally wowed by my own progress. My right knee was hurting for about 3-4 weeks to the point that the simple act of getting up was painful. After trying massage therapy and chiropractic modality, I was referred to see Jason for physical therapy. I came to him in pain, limping while I walked. He started our session with having me do stretches at first and also incorporated several other techniques to help loosen the tight muscles. Gradually as the weeks went by, the pain started lessening and I started to be able to do the things I used to take for granted like getting up from a sitting position without wincing or going up and down the stairs without pain. I'm back to 95% function from my baseline and I was recently discharged from his care. I can't thank him enough for getting me. I've been seen Dr. Jason Chang at HolistiCare Physical Therapy for three sessions for different problems. I'm very happy and satisfied with their services. Dr. Chang and his assistants are very nice and like a family, which made me feel warm and relaxing. I went to HolistiCare Physical Therapy due to chronic pain behind my right shoulder blade that kept me up at night. The pain and sleepless nights lasted for years. It was sub-optimal to say the least. During my consultation visit with Dr. Chang, he measured my joint flexibility and alignment. Within the first five minutes, he informed me that my shoulder may not be the problem at all and that the problem may be caused by a spinal misalignment in my upper spine/neck area. "Have you gone to a chiropractor before? No? Would you like to try an adjustment?" I proceeded to lay on my side as his weight jolted my back. First.. Crack. Second.. Oww. Then.. Instant relief! I was completely pain free for two weeks and my right shoulder was visibly lower than before. The tightness eventually sneaked back, but Dr. Chang taught me stretching techniques to expand my range of motion and to lower the tension in my chest that caused my rhomboid muscles to be overworked and tight. In addition to stretching, the physical therapy assistant, Sierra, did an excellent job of relaxing the muscles through a combination of deep tissue and gua sha (massage with something like a spatula). I was so sold on their techniques that I even tried cupping... A bit too painful for my tastes, and I no longer like cephalopods. After five one-hour sessions, my pain has lowered by half and my neck flexibility has increased by about 20-30%. I am very happy with the results, and I can honestly say that I really enjoyed each session. The people at Holisticare PT were knowledgeable, professional, and very friendly. I won't miss the pain, but I'll miss going to physical therapy! --------- Edit: They have moved to a new facility located at 1350 S. King St. on the third floor. At first, I was skeptical going to Holisticare with such few ratings but when I arrived, there was ample parking with a dedicated parking lot, which is very convenient for Kakaako. It seemed a little strange to go into the Body and Balance Fitness studio but, once I arrived, I was greeted warmly by the owner and primary physical therapist, Dr. Jason Chang. There was no wait time and I was quickly brought to the back to discuss my ailment (medial epicondylitis or "Golfers elbow"). He was very knowledgable on my disorder and was quick to offer different types of modalities. I deferred to Dr. Chang's expertise to decide what would be best for my elbow and how to quickly get me back on the golf course. He patiently explained the exercises and modalities he used and it made a lot of sense. I quickly recovered with less than a month of physical therapy from Dr. Chang. I can understand that insurance can be complicated due to various plans and different benefit level. Front desk staff could have easily mention that she does not know and need to research it. Instead, she said "oh $45... oh maybe $35." I asked her to verify the amount of copayment and obviously she was too busy to bother. I looked it up and it clearly state that copayment is $25. Dr. Jason Chang & Ciera both got me back walking much sooner than I thought I would. Their combination of exercises, stretching movements, and therapy massages was short of a miracle. ( they use this suction cup device that completely relieve my pain after a few treatments. My orthopedic surgeon told me it is because it increased the bolood flow in that specific area.) They had me doing specific exercises, (targeting problem areas( that I would never think of doing myself. They also take the time to explain every process throughly. That really helped me on my road to recovery. Additionally the office atmosphere is very comfortable and inviting.
