I was looking for brunch and this place did the trick! I had French toast bacon and home fries. Everything was wonderful the waitstaff were very friendly and accommodating. The restaurant itself is a great diner vibe. The owner walked around and treated everyone. They had a classic black and white movie playing in the background. They really make you feel like home in this restaurant very welcoming and warm in all interactions. I throughly enjoyed this place even as a solo diner. read more

The restaurant is a very cute/retro dinner, you can see the cooks making your food with nice seating selection of either a booth or stools. The service when coming in was great, very nice and welcoming. The waitress was nice and helpful. Let's talk about the food. To be honest this might be one of the best breakfasts I have had in a while. The sausage wasn't link's but an actual patty which was super good! Everything was delicious!! We were so hungry we dove in before taking photos. I had the Cobb Salad. It was very fresh, with the perfect amount of eggs, bacon, mixed greens, etc. Topped with flavorful chopped grilled chicken. Hubby had the Mexicali Omelette and hash browns. Son had the Greek Omelette. I love how thin and crepelike the eggs are. Both omelettes we stuffed, the Mexicali omelette's chorizo was well seasoned with just the right amount of cheese and topped with their salsa. Greek Omelette was simple yet delicious. Stopped in for a breakfast after a wedding and it was just what we needed. The server Rochelle had more than enough energy to counter the hangovers and was just an absolute delight. The food was ridiculously good - from the Autumn Benny with pulled pork to the blueberry pancakes that were so large they spilled over the plate. Coffee was always topped up and every one and everything was great. The place was quaint and homey - like a cross between a diner and your grandma's kitchen. Get there by 8. On a Saturday, we arrived at 8:15 and sat at the counter- which we don't mind- we get to watch the activity in the kitchen line. Be prepared to wait if you get there "late". Food was great and large portions. Place was recommended by my husband's colleague. Husband was intrigued with the offering of spam and cheese omelette, which he mentioned to Barb - something he hasn't seen outside of Hawaii. He loved it. I enjoyed the home-made sausage patty, which I mentioned to the owner who was helping with the waffles. We didn't order waffles, but they had a strawberry batter special that smelled and looked amazing. Wow! Great breakfast for lunch! What a find. The town of Elwood was having a festival and car show today and we travelled to go. Lucky us fell upon the Breaking Bread for lunch and we are glad we did. 2 fluffy and huge pancakes graced the center of the table. On our plates were 2 eggs done exactly right, their famous bacon, hash browns and 3 pieces of toast! This was their breakfast special and it was so delicious. Elwood is a great smaller community and they soon recognized that we were "not from around here"! They treated us like kings and queens with the finest of service and periodic welcoming chatter. An awesome diner type place in downtown Ellwood City. We grabbed lunch there while working in town. It is small but very good homecooked food. I got a made to order omelette, one of co.workers got a burger. Everything was fresh and made fast. The salsa they had for the omelette was homemade and had great flavor. The burger was good sized and served on a quality brioche bun, and they have fresh sweet potato fries as an option. The desserts looked good but we didn't have time to try them. I'll for sure hit them up again driving by or working the area. It isn't too for off the turnpike if you are driving by. read more

It's one of those places where you pay at the counter when you're done. It's street parking, but didn't have any trouble finding a spot. This is definitely a hidden gem. Went Saturday and the place was packed but for good reason. I had eggs Benedict. My wife had the Mexican omelette, and we also had a order of the pumpkin pancakes. The only negative of Breaking Bread was the wait. But it was slightly our fault, since we wanted a booth instead of sitting at the counter. After about 25 minutes we finally were seated, but the waitress took about 5 minutes to come take our drink order. What she lacked in quickness she made up for kindness though, so it was a wash. The food was fantastic. I ordered an omelet that was overloaded with chicken broccoli and cheese. The rye toast was very good as well. In addition, I added a fruit cup which you could tell had been mixed together a while ago bc it all tasted the same. My wife ordered basted eggs (they don't poach), wheat berry toast and fruit. She also got a side of yogurt which actually looked like about two servings worth. The toast was different, kind of nutty. Good though. If ever around the area, we would definitely be back. Even with the wait for seats and food (at least 15 minutes), it was all fresh, not greasy, and cheap (all that food was $17). read more

This place is out of this world. The portions of food are amazingly awesome! I've had quite a few items off their menu (sorry no picture of the menu but I will next weekend) and I must say everything has been spectacular. You can't go wrong with their eggs just good old eggs and toast taste exceptional here. Today I had the peanut butter French toast which was absolutely to die for, that's if you like chocolate,peanut butter, and waffles. Enjoy! Ps I also took a picture of a sandwich being prepared. I was excited to try this restaurant on a pass through town. After a 35+ minutes of waiting on my food I had to leave to make an appointment. Paid and never ate. My review isn't of the food, but of the experience and the wait. Side note, I agree it was busy when I arrived but the last 15 minutes of the wait the place had cleared out. Stayed in Ellwood City for the weekend and found Breaking Bread and was certainly pleased! Food was delicious, portions were perfect. They had pumpkin pancakes on their specials which were AMAZING. Went here on a very busy day. A festival was going on and people were strolling the streets popping in and ordering food to go; and then coming back to pick up their orders. Service was a little slow for this reason, but the waitress constantly reassured us our food was on its way. I never felt like we were forgotten. I MUST say the little piggy ( biscuits & gravy) were well worth the wait! The place looked Great too! This used to be a old dirty diner! I've been to this place probably 10 times and I always come to the same conclusion: the food is good but not good enough to justify the wait. I am not exaggerating when I say that takeout times vary anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour on Saturdays and Sundays. If you're planning on dining in on those days, expect a 15 minute wait to sit down followed by another 1.5 hour journey until you're able to finally leave. During my experience yesterday, it occurred to me that the cooks work one ticket at a time which is very frustrating to watch. I understand that the restaurant is small and that the breakfast/lunch rush is stressful on the weekends, but the wait times are awful. The food is good and the employees are very nice, however it's not worth it. read more
