3.5 solid orange stars. Little to say and little to desire, other than not much was accomplished here with Breaking Boundaries. I was looking to have some super simple ink done and I set a consultation and the only thing that was confirmed was my appointment. IN person. No big deal I wasn't looking to inked that appointment. After the next Santa Clara county from purple to the red tier tattoo shops opened up. Great so I could have been inked by the time of my appointment, but who was I meeting with!? No follow through I cancelled my appointment. I am at peace with myself. 3.5 Solid stars here. _Enso +- This Breaking boundaries seems to have a solid fan base and judging from the work seems amazing. No in person protocol explained via phone. ?? May contact them at a later time. _I look forward to the future and I enjoy the present. read more

I recently came to Breaking Boundaries Tattoo and got some scars covered up by Caroline! I'd been having some trouble finding an artist that I felt comfortable with to do a piece for me, but I'm glad that I was recommended CC! She is literally so sweet, makes great conversation and she really does have the lightest touch. Although I'm a big fat baby and the tattoo still hurt, at most times I could zone out because of how light it felt. Overall it was such a great experience, I was so happy with the result. I didn't even really want another tattoo after this but it's true what they say... it's kind of addicting... I definitely know who to return to when the time comes! Thank you again CC :)! read more

I was following Mabel's artwork for almost a year and she kept doing all of my favorite anime and game pieces and making them all look AMAZING. So I decided to reach out and see if she would do a tattoo for me. She was so easy to work with. Listened to exactly what I was thinking and then accommodated in every possible way. She has a very light touch and the tattoo was practically painless (depends on area though obviously). She took her time and she made sure it was exactly the way she liked it before finishing. 10000% I am going to contact Mabel to do another piece for me (soon)! Highly recommend. Went here for my leg tattoo and chest tattoo. May be hard to find since it's hidden and upstairs. For parking people usually park at cali spartan tacos parking lot. Pretty clean inside. Has an open space concept. They operate on appointments only so have to book/call ahead. read more

Wish I could give more stars honestly, I've now gotten 4 tattoos from Mabel and she's just incredible. Every time I go there she brings whatever idea is in my head to life and in beautiful fashion. The vibe at the shop is always super chill, most of the time it'll just be you and her and whatever horror tv show she's put in lol. (She will let you watch whatever you request). S/o to my artist Trung for his amazing work and attention to detail! I reached out to Trung via Instagram after doing my own personal research on various Bay Area tattoo artists. I instantly knew just by looking through his photos that his style/technique/shading matched my vibe/preference. He was quick to respond and was able to set an appt about a month out from when I first contacted him and from there everything was smooth sailing. My experience was really calming; Trung is super chill and polite. You can tell that he truly cares.. not just about the work he puts in but that his client feels at ease. My orchid realism piece took 2 sessions in total and is about 7 inches in length for reference. Once I figure out the details for my next piece to my half sleeve I'll be sure to hit up Trung. I'd highly recommend Shawn. I get compliments from strangers all the time on Shawn's work. Of course I'm sure your friends' cousin can do it cheaper out of their "studio" in their garage - but remember, tattoos are on your skin for life so make the best investment you can and don't cheap out. I have done two full sleeves through him and have started the outline for my leg sleeve, with plans to get more work done through him. Shawn also did my girlfriend's forearm piece as well as many friends I have recommended to him throughout the years. His color work is phenomenal with layering/blending of colors, along with a light hand. Line work impeccable, ultra clean lines. He has worked really quickly as I can finish 95% to 100% of a sleeve outline in a session. When I have an idea, I bounce it off of him and he draws it out, it comes out better than I envision every time. As far as scheduling goes, it's pretty easy as I just call or text him and he lets me know his availability. I usually do 6-8 hours per session and they go by quick, since he has entertainment so you don't get bored. There's the TV or music of your choice to pass the time. I plan to get the rest of my body done through Shawn and would recommend at least scheduling a consultation if you have any hesitation. read more

I've been a tattoo enthusiast for almost 20 years, and have seen the progression of tattoos in the Bay Area. I have several tattoos from other artists already; however, I truly believe Shawn (Dung) is the best Asian inspired tattoo artist in the Bay--and probably even in California! What sets him apart is that he always strives to improve his skillset (hence the name Breaking Boundaries). All his apprentices need to have some sort of "professional" art background (art classes etc); and his reasoning is that you need to understand basic art concepts in order to be a good artist--and not just having a passion for it. Imagine getting inked by someone who only has experience from tattooing friends in a small garage vs someone who has taken painting/drawing classes. Big difference in skillset! I had an arm piece idea that had a long list of what I wanted--as it represented something meaningful to me. Shawn was able to work with the ideas thrown at him, and able to create the art, and it was better than I expected! He's also really nice and personable, and we had great talks while I was getting inked. I always get complimented from the tattoo, and I know I'll likely get more tattoos here in the future read more

I was very fortunate to have Mabel be the artist to do my first anime piece. She was super friendly, communicative, and accommodating before (in my conversation regarding my booking inquiry with her), during, and after the tattoo session. She made sure I was comfortable and to let her know if I needed to take a break at any time during the session. If I ever had to adjust my position for her to work, she politely asked. The studio itself was clean, well-lit, and adequately air-conditioned. Parking was easy to find in the surrounding neighborhoods where you don't have to worry about paying, or hourly parking limits and would only require a few blocks to walk to get to the studio which itself was very easy to find. Lastly, and most importantly I can't give enough praise for the quality of her craft. I absolutely love the piece I had done by her and her attention to detail is amazing. I would absolutely love to work with her again on a piece in the future and highly recommend her to anyone interested in the style that she specializes in. read more

Great experience, and came out better than I could've imagined. I looked long and hard for an artist before I was referred to Dung. It took eight sessions and we had a lot of good laughs along the way. He does amazing original work and if you like the style you see in the photos, I guarantee he can make you something that will blow your mind. I know for sure I will enjoy this tattoo for the rest of my life and I believe that all Tattoo should be treated this way. I got some scars covered by Caroline and I'm so in love! She has the most gentle touch when tattooing which helps for large pieces and for getting tattooed in extremely sensitive areas. Always very professional and makes sure to ask how I'm feeling during tattoo. The way she covered up my scars by using the leaves and petals is AMAZING! I have been booking an appointment with Mabel for the last six months. My brother introduced me to Mabel's Instagram page and once I saw her work, I knew I needed to get a tattoo done by her. Location is in a pretty hidden area in San Jose but it does provide easy access to parking. As far as the actual tattoo process goes, Mabel has gone above and beyond to make sure I am comfortable and always checking to see if I'm in any sort of pain or need a break. The shop and the other artists all give out good energy and are very easy to converse with. Would highly recommend Mabel! read more

The guy who did mine and my friends tattoos were nice but the they turned out so bad. My tattoo on my collarbone looks good but the one on the back of my elbow is faded and half the ink is gone. The guy didn't even shave the skin or wrap the tattoos afterwards. I waited a while to post the review until it completely healed but now that it healed and looks bad, i'm posting it. read more

Shawn is the only person allowed to ink me. From day one he is one who believes each individual should have their own unique artwork. Meaning, your piece can be entirely unique if requested. Not only that, it is encouraged. Shawn has been inking me for over 10 years and his progression and accuracy has only improved with the years. His stroke is precise, fast, but light. He can and is able to do dark line work, never messy or generic, but also stencil or charcoal pencil light line work. More often than not, random individuals have come up to me to admire my piece and give praises on the quality of the line work as well as the art piece itself. The artwork on my skin was hand sketched over weeks time until it was ready to be placed on my skin. You really have to understand the quality of line work of an artist. That of which being hair follicle thin, straight, and if needed a fading gradient or light like stencil. It simply isn't just a tattoo, it is art and should be treated as so. Tiffany was very nice and patient. She made sure that I had all of the answers before proceeding with the tattooing. It's about an inch tattoo on my arm, so it only took like 15min. The pain was manageable without any numbing cream. It was more intense when tattooing over some scars. I followed Tiffany's instructions on after care and everything went smoothly. It's been almost a month and I love how it turned out. I recommend Tiffany.
