Love this place! Twice in the last year! I've always loved the water, living less than 5 miles away from Breakaway Excursions has made that much easier and accessible. We've been back in this area for almost 8 years and JUST THIS YEAR did we get a chance to get out on the water! The boathouse is small, but functional. The staff is very friendly and very informative. The website is easy to navigate and reserve your wanted items. If you're going here for the first time, arrive 20 minutes early. Make sure somebody brings an ID as they'll need it on file while you're out on the water. You can fill the voucher-out digitally in advance, and there's the life-vest fitting and they will also give you a tutorial that will last approximately 5-7 minutes. I've always debated having a kayak, between storage and hauling, I've always put it off. This place, for $56 for 2 hours on a tandem, it hits the spot. I had the most amazing experience with Breakaway Excursions! The space is incredibly unique and so beautiful. Doug and Pam were so warm and welcoming. They prepared the cutest brunch setup with all kinds of yummy options and pretty fresh flowers. The kayak route was beautiful, and we saw eagles and herons. We didn't have to worry about a thing because Doug did a perfect job teaching and leading when I had almost no kayaking experience. I honestly wish we lived closer; it is one of those beautiful parts of Ohio that taps into every sense. Your life will be enhanced through visiting the intentionally preserved & manicured parks with ample opportunities to take in the wonders of a more natural environment. Breakaway Excursions is a unique doorway to your escape. They offered so many activities for all seasons. We called in & spoke to Pam, who highlighted several options for a family fun day. We are a family of four (4) with two (2) young daughters ages seven (7) & nine (9), so based on Pam's confidence, we decided to go for something different & exciting, a KAYAKING trip. Our Breakaway Excursions' adventure was their recommended "medium" package of about 5.5 miles down the winding Cuyahoga River. While there may be online options & certainly plenty of information, we received answers to all our concerns or questions, such as proper attire & footwear (dress for weather & movement free of friction or clothing rub spots & footwear that is safe with heal support & may get wet), then reserved the kayaks for a specific time & paid by phone. We met Pam at the Breakaway Excursions' outlet. Parking is free behind their building. Pam finalized the paperwork with us, made sure we had something to protect our essential belongings (an inexpensive rental - waterproof plastic box), & fitted all of us in comfortable & quality safety wear (life jackets). I am a larger dad, and I'm glad to say - no worries - they had the equipment & kayaks for all shapes & sizes. Pam then ran through some basic, intro training that our girls could watch without the stress of being on the water yet. While Doug loaded up the four (4) individual kayaks, we made sure everyone made a restroom stop on site. We were off on a short ride to the selected launch. Doug unloaded the kayaks onto the ground & then ran through another rowing instruction & training on how kayaks will handle in the water. Doug assisted everybody into our kayaks one by one, & then again gave basic skills reinforcement to reduce any panic or built-up anxiety from the little ones. I don't think I could ask for better guidance & patience that helped reassure all of us but especially the kids. We were off on a breath-taking voyage that cost us just over $100!!! What a true Breakaway Excursion..... Doug & Pam were great people, very assuring & non-assuming. We were kayaking at a leisure enjoyable pace, which lasted about three (3) hours. Doug let us know a marker when to call him as to time-up the pick up without rush or pressure. The entire experience was excellent & better than expected from the children, because they caught right on from the tutorials & were off & rowing. Breakaway Excursions should franchise the fun, wish we had something similar closer to us!! read more

What a great time we had yesterday! Spent about 3 hours taking their beginner kayaking and safety class at LaDue Reservoir starting at 530pm. It was a beautiful day and Doug, Morgan and Sara (sorry if the spelling isn't right ladies lol) were awesome. Kayaking might be fairly easy, but it's definitely a workout if done properly! The class was really informative and we learned some excellent safety and rescue moves as well as proper paddling techniques. Not sure I mastered those, but that's ok. Hoping to take the river class sometime! read more

My sister and I had a really great experience. They gave us good explicit directions about paddling and other personal tips to be more efficient individually. They told us facts about the lake too. It was a very beautiful sunny evening with extremely calm water. Make sure to bring a change of clothes because you do get wet just from the drips off the paddle. It's easier to get in the canoe from standing in the water so water shoes or shoes you don't mind getting wet are advisable. read more

I took a kayak trip with my family and my sister and her family earlier this summer. I have kids that are 13 and 14 and she has a 6-year-old that they put with her husband in a double kayak. Doug provided great and friendly instruction before sending us out and my kids had no issues navigating their kayaks the rest of the trip. The kayaks here were new and very comfortable. Doug was also very thorough in showing everyone how to adjust the kayak for maximum comfort. It was a great trip and everyone had a great time. I also just recently had my youngest daughter take her first archery lesson at Breakaway. She had been doing it for a few years somewhere else, but we wanted to give them a try. Within an hour, Doug had improved two bad habits she exhibited while shooting, taught her how to score her shoot, and helped her improve her form. I will be taking her here now for her archery and highly recommend it to anyone who is beginning or even just wants the availability of a good atmosphere to go and get in some practice. Doug and Pam were delightful. They gave great instruction and provided a wonderful meal and campfire. The river is a mix of residential and nature which may not be everyone's first choice but we saw ducks, Blue Heron, birds, Red Tail Hawk and cool flowers. It was very quit and peaceful. They set the table with a flare and like it to be a surprise. They were very accommodating to varying diet needs.. ie vegan and dairy free. They were talking about offering an over-night excursion and everyone was excited about that possibility. I look forward to exploring other types of adventures with them. read more

I've only kayaked a few times and am not very confident in my strokes. The beginning class had lots of technique so I started to feel more comfortable by the end of the evening. You can tell that Doug and Pam don't skimp on the quality of kayaks and life jackets so I felt safe and could focus on enjoying the adventure. Lady behind the counter was a little snarky. A bit of a smart butt. She fired off a few uncalled for belittling comments to my wife that caught us both off guard. Thought my wife was going to go off on her, but she bit her tongue. The young kids, "staff", were very friendly, but mentioned several times they did not want to get yelled at again. Yes, by the same person behind the counter. There are rules, oh yes there are because I say so rules, that you find out as you break them, by being yelled at from the lady, "behind the counter". This while being outside getting ready. Train your staff to tell me the rules, come outside and talk to me, but don't yell at me from inside the store. I am not a mind reader, and Miss Cleo is out of business. If you want things to be run a certain way, Post the rules. Had a good time on the lake, will kayak again, but elsewhere. In conclusion, the lady behind the counter is rolled too tight. Oh yeah, you might want to mention that the lake has a current due to the river. Coming back is more difficult, so manage your time with this in mind. When you talk to the Lady behind the counter before booking, you are assured of trained staff adjusting the kayak to fit you, and complete explanation of kayaking before departure. NOT. Staff is nice but not trained very well. They function as a extension of the voice behind the counter, the all powerful pompous. read more
