Girls kayaking trip
Leslie H.

What a great experience. I was a little unsure about going on a kayak trip. A few friends talked me into it and I am so glad they did. This place was great they took all the correct measures in social distancing since that has to be the new norm. Kayaking for the first time here was a great time very peaceful and serene. I highly recommend this place for first time kayaking. I did get stuck once but I guess that is to be expected for going out on your first trip. Life is an adventure everyone has a time when you just get stuck. Our guide who took us to the drop off spot was awesome. She was funny and gave us a lot of tips for our trip back down the river. Sometimes you have to try something once because it might be your new favorite.

Everything was wonderful. Had a fantastic time on our kayak trip. There were many packages to choose from, but we chose the 3 hour ride down the river. It was just the right amount of time. The parking lot was a little bit difficult to find, but we eventually did. The 3 hour tour (6 miles) is basically a "float" with minimal paddling which is right up our alley. It was a very hot day, so this was just the way to cool off. The scenery was breathtaking and the ride itself was very serine. We went on a weekday, so unsure how busy the river is on weekends. We will definitely be back!

Three of us turned to Burning River Adventures for a kayaking trip recently. Easy to book a time online and pay in advance, however they are the only company so far that I know of that is charging a $5 cleaning fee because of Covid-19. Meh it is what it is. We picked the Middle Trip of 4.5 miles and two hours. Single kayak is $25. We showed up at the back of the park at Water Works and friendly staff gave us a brief overview then took us on a mini bus to a spot down the river where we would start from. Our reservation was for 1:30pm, we got to the launch spot around 1:50pm, and arrived back to base around 3:20pm. So you're really only on the water for an hour and a half, which is still a decent little paddle on the river. I would say most of the stretch of the Cuyahoga River that we did was pretty shallow and you will scrape the bottom of your vessel a couple of times. I think we were lucky in that it did rain the night before and the morning of so that did help out the water level a little bit. The first half of our trip was peaceful and beautiful. We saw lots of turtles sunbathing, a crane, and just basked in the warm sun and the quiet loveliness of nature. We even experienced a couple little baby rapids. The second half of the trip is where the tubers start coming in and that was not so great. They can't steer so they are just floating all over the river like bombs you need to safely avoid. A lot of them were tied together in large groups which made it harder to move around since they were blocking most of the river. Several had radios loudly playing so no more peace and quiet. I'm all for sharing the river and for people to enjoy being outside, but I'll be honest this was a bit of a bummer to encounter. I would recommend BRA and checking out this part of the Cuyahoga River, but I'd strongly suggest going during the week to avoid the tubers. They just take away from the relaxing experience in nature and you'll find yourself having to focus on zigzagging around them and trying to get away from them as fast as you can. Last comments would be that it would be great if BRA had some water on had to purchase for those who forgot theirs. Also, if they had a couple shirts on hand for purchase as well. I liked their Paddle The River Ohio shirt that I saw online, but it appears you can only purchase it when setting up a kayak trip. In the end we all had an enjoyable time and I plan on trying BRA out again!

Well organized... nice area to kayak with a great array of wildlife peaking out to greet you.

I had a couple of great experiences with Burning River this year. They offer several distances along the Cuyahoga River so all experience levels can be accommodated. Don't be intimidated by the longer trips, they are manageable for anyone as long as you pack a snack and lots of water. If you want to bring your phone for photos and videos, they rent a waterproof carry case - or leave your phone at home, you're probably on that thing too much anyway.

The cute ducks swimming around!

Full disclosure, I haven't been the captain or the one to make the reservation, so I can't speak to those parts of the experience. There's some public parking near the dock, and you go up to the little shack to sign your waiver. There isn't a bathroom at this dock, but you can walk down to where the big boats for the music cruise dock and there's a small restroom over there. Once your whole group is signed in, the boats are at a floating dock, and you can just hop on and go. We've done both the pontoon boat and the speed boat. The speed boat was definitely more fun, because it goes faster, but the pontoon is a little more roomy for a slow cruise, your choice. You can bring snacks and drinks along for the ride. There are usually a handful of staff launching boats and getting people loaded. They're friendly and fun. One slight drawback to the 2 hour cruise is that you are on the inside of the railway bridge, so if it's down, you're stuck on the river and have to wait for it to go back up, and sometimes it's a pretty narrow window. If you're on the lake side of the bridge, you risk getting stuck outside and running over your time. I believe the Captain has to do a little safety course prior to the activity, but otherwise, it's pretty easy! Definitely a fun activity, and a way to get yourself a boat day if you don't have an invitation.

Even though it's a bit of a drive, this is my go-to place for canoeing and kayaking…read more It's just SO cheap compared to all the places further north, which are double or triple the price for less time on the river. We take the 14 mile trip, which essentially works itself out for $25 a person. The canoes and kayaks are a little older, the vans are older, they might not clean the life jackets super often, but it's a kickass time! But honestly, who cares! You're going to get dirty and sweaty canoeing or kayaking down the river. You really cannot beat the price for the experience. There's a lot less litter on the river compared to when I've went further north, less cars, and you are surrounded by corn fields. The river is simply beautiful and relaxing. It depends on the weekend whether or not there will be a lot of people - not many people do the 14 mile trip, so the first 7 miles of that are peaceful. After you hit the 7 mile mark, there tends to be a lot more people, as that's what most people take. 14 miles takes around 4-5 hours (or 6, depends on how much or little you're paddling, speed of the river, etc) , and 7 miles takes about half that. They also aren't strict at all on what you can bring/drink on the river, or if you need to stop, or anything else. In addition, if you do flip, the water level is 3 feet at most along the river. Just make sure to call ahead if it has been raining recently. I would recommend taking a trip out here out to the middle of nowhere to spend a summer day. It's a ton of fun and a good way to build teamwork trying not to flip a canoe or kayak.

I've been visiting this place for years and had met many kind, friendly and helpful fellow visitors. I cannot say the same for that ranger - I hope y'all never come across her in your effort to find clarity on directions. My favorite areas of Raccoon Creek are the beach and the mineral springs. When the area water levels aren't low, you'll also see a beautiful 10 foot waterfall adjacent to Frankfort Mineral Springs. The beach is lovely in all seasons, but if you can catch it during the peak of Fall foliage. The many colors of the trees reflecting from the lake surface is quite the sight! There's a boat rental and the rates are very reasonable. There's also a very large picnic area with dozens of tables, plenty of parking and restrooms.
