Everything was fresh and they were able to slice our bread thick like we wanted. I haven't tried the bread yet but our muffins were honestly some of the moistest muffins we've ever had! Makes me feel like I'm back home in PA on the East Coast. Good bread is so hard to find in Minnesota. A true French Hoagie Roll, even has a Pretzel Hoagie Roll, a great soft pretzel that just needs 2 min in the air fryer on toast mode for warm perfection, or 20 seconds in the microwave. Their dessert game is spot on as well. Had the mini pull a part cinnamon roll and the sweet tooth was satisfied. Very clean facility, knowledgeable staff, and the line moves pretty fast even when busy. They offer a great selection of other breads, scones, muffins, and more as well. Omg! We stumbled across this location on our way to get a smoothie and are so excited for the fresh baked bread we saw and SMELLED! My husband got us 4 pretzel buns for dinner later and they are so squishy soft and delicious smelling! I would be lying if I said all 4 made it home . We also got a couple of mini muffins in the blue berry lemon flavor and were met with an instantly delicious flavor burst as soon as you bite into them! So delicious! The shop is tiny and can probably cram about 20 folks in there at a time, but you've got two cashiers who are quick to take your order, and a very artisan /brick 100 year old vibe. Carb Fans!!! Bread Smith in St. Paul is such a gem. From freshly baked breads to sweet treats, I have yet to try something that wasn't amazing. The loaf of sour dough will run you $6.50 and you can get in sliced in the store. The loaf is big! The banana chocolate chip muffin was another highlight. Perfect mix of banana and chocolate. We've been fans of the Breadsmith for a while. Really how can you go wrong with anything freshly baked? Some of the breads that we have recently enjoyed are their english muffin bread and flatbread.  The english muffin bread is like having an english muffin in the form of toast. We love to make flatbread pizzas with their flatbread. Their scones are excellent but the item we really enjoy is their pretzel. Reminds us of when we visited Philadelphia. The Breadsmith is one of the few bakeries in the Cities where you can purchase a fresh baked pretzel. Previously we've enjoyed their focaccia, hot dog and burger buns and even some sweet breads. Breadsmith is a small chain that looks and feels like similar chains from the 1990s---Caribou, Panera and so on. That said, the quality of its products is higher and it has a bunch of (not labeled) vegan options. Many of their items are kosher, too. I usually get a sourdough loaf ($6 or so), which is great: super fresh, perfectly made. Their babkas are pretty good at $4 each and are vegan by default. They're not quite as soft and ooey-gooey as a cinnamon roll, but they're still good. They also have vegan coffee cake and a ton of other options. Why only three stars? Principally because they don't label their vegan options. Every time you go, the staff doesn't know what's vegan and are happy to look things up for you (they have a binder with ingredients for hundreds of items), but there are often long lines and it would be annoying to make others wait. If Breadsmith made it easier for vegans to know what's what, and maybe added a few more decadent options (how about a peanut butter brownie?), it would get another star. read more

Decided to try Breadsmith on Grand Ave today. Ordered pretzel breadstick, mini cinnamon pull apart, whole wheat apple cranberry muffin. The pretzel breadstick tasted like a pretzel, but had a consistency of a doughy bread, not what I had expected, but generally good. Mini cinnamon pull aparts tasted fine, but did not feel fully fresh, more like 1 day old ones. The muffin basically tasted like the sugar that it was topped with with some taste of cranberries. Overall, okay, not spectacular and definitely not a memorable experience. Slow moving line at 12:30pm with 4 people in the line in front of me. The prices were very reasonable. If you're not from Minnesota, you wouldn't know this is like a panera bread of the area. While the service was solid, the line moved at a good pace and they were covid safe; many of the more local spots are more enjoyable and have more character. I literally come here just for the Chocolate Babka. If you have never had Chocolate Babka or heard of it, in the most common sense it is basically a chocolate version of a cinnamon roll. Breadsmith basically creates theirs just like a cinnamon roll with a rich chocolate and cinnamon crumb filling wrapped in a lightly sweet dough. I used to LOVE Breadsmith, but there is no question that they have changed their recipes in the last few years. The banana bread is two thirds of the size and now very dry. Today I got two cranberry muffins and ended up throwing them away. Dry as a bone. Tasted like corn bread with seriously three cranberries. Perhaps this is still a great place to get bread, but not a place for sweats. I would also avoid the pretzels. They look great but just taste like bread - not the chewy pretzel consistency your would expect. read more

They have a great variety of fresh bread served by the loaf, sliced if you ask for it, and often still warm from the oven. Breadsmith is sooooo delicious! This spot had been a Macalester staple since I was in junior high. I mainly go for their cranberry blueberry bread but it's all good. Everything is baked fresh and with quality ingredients. The muffins and bread rolls always incorporate great flavor without ever being too sweet. If you ever want to check if they have a specific loaf, call ahead and reserve a loaf. I did that tonight and was able to pick it up before they closed. Easy and quick. I've always been partial to Great Harvest, myself, merely as a result of geography and proximity. Well, this morning I happened to be in the area and happened to remember that we were out of bread and happened to be stopped at Snelling and Grand; I spied Breadsmith on the corner and I squealed into a spot and ran in. The smells are intoxicating (and like daggers to my olfactory bulbs, connected to the rest of my currently-dieting body) and the bread variety looks great. I selected a multigrain loaf, round and rustic, and, jealous of everyone else ordering their scones and babkes, got a banana bread with nuts for fun. I snuck a few bites of each and I'm thoroughly satisfied. Hubby has devoured half the loaf of banana bread already, thank heavens (and damn him for having such a high metabolic rate). I don't think that I'll be switching allegiance any time soon, but I do have to go back and investigate their babkes further, for research purposes, you know. read more

My dad always craves for crispy on the outside, chewy on the inside French baguettes so when he came into town, I tried to find a place in Saint Paul and came upon Breadsmith. We went early in the morning and the baguettes were fresh and the regular French and peasant bread was still warm to the touch. The bread was excellent and the service was outstanding. The day after my Wuollet Bakery disappointment, I stopped in Breadsmith during Grand Ol Days. I forgot about Breadsmith, even though I went there quite a bit during and after college. Mmmm, you walk in and are greeted with a wall of freshly made bread and a heavenly odor. Brings a smile to my face. Now, I like pastries but I LOVE bread, so I am glad Breadsmith doesn't waste time on the sweets (well there are some, but I've never paid attention). Soft bread, crusty bread, tons of rolls and mini loaves, so much to choose from! And they always have breads to sample, which is lovely. I don't think I've ever had unsmiling service or a bad loaf of bread from Breadsmith. If there was a shop in Seattle I'd be there all the time. Totally awesome bread, amazing aroma as you walk through the door, quick efficient service. However, I think they are taking tip culture too far. This is not a restaurant, it is a bakery. I'd never expect to be encouraged to tip the cashier at my local grocery, please do not expect it here. This shop is not really set up for you to even sit down in it to have one of their amazing muffins onsite; it is way too crowded. So, why the tip jar guys? A trip to Breadsmith always immediately follows a trip to Jamba Juice. I know little about all the crazy delicious breads they sell here other than I have enjoyed them all. Plus, they let you sample stuff, which is fun to try and learn about new things. They have mini muffins which are perfectly sized for my four year old, and their seasonal hot cross buns are insane. I generally don't like cranberries, but enjoy their cranberry scones, which is my "usual". We usually sit in Breadsmith, drink our Jamba Juice and eat our muffins and the kids think it is the cooles thing ever. And since they think so, I think so too. read more

I am a regular at Great Harvest but stopped in here because I read on yelp that you can buy single hamburger buns/sandwich rolls which is what I needed today. They, like Great Harvest, offer free samples, although they did not offer us anything today. I am sure we could have asked but I really wanted to get in and out. I got a few different types of rolls, a potato roll, two dill/onion rolls, and a whole wheat roll. While we were leaving, I saw they had mini scones so we tried a maple pecan one and this scone was seriously the best scone I have ever eaten..I was so so sad we only bought one to split! I will most definitely be back here but I still think Great Harvest is my weekly bread stop. I like the vibe better at Great Harvest better and much better parking. This more than likely will be my new place to stop for a scone though..In fact, tomorrow morning I might have to stop and get one.... read more
