Pumpkin/walnut muffin

Stopped in for some awesome fall treats/adventure. Love their breads but this time went for muffins and roll. Service was so helpful and you feel like you're in a "fresh baked bakery " cause you are! Fresh breads, muffins, scones, etc adorn selves giving it an artsy artisan feel.

Omg if you could smell this photo!! The pretzel buns are SO DELICIOUS

Omg! We stumbled across this location on our way to get a smoothie and are so excited for the fresh baked bread we saw and SMELLED! My husband got us 4 pretzel buns for dinner later and they are so squishy soft and delicious smelling! I would be lying if I said all 4 made it home . We also got a couple of mini muffins in the blue berry lemon flavor and were met with an instantly delicious flavor burst as soon as you bite into them! So delicious! The shop is tiny and can probably cram about 20 folks in there at a time, but you've got two cashiers who are quick to take your order, and a very artisan /brick 100 year old vibe. We loved it and would gladly be back when we are in the area!!

Carb Fans!!! Bread Smith in St. Paul is such a gem. From freshly baked breads to sweet treats, I have yet to try something that wasn't amazing. The loaf of sour dough will run you $6.50 and you can get in sliced in the store. The loaf is big! The banana chocolate chip muffin was another highlight. Perfect mix of banana and chocolate. This location is very busy but they had 3 cashiers to work through the rush.

Cross section of chocolate babka loaf; vegan by default ($4). Pretty tasty, though not as soft and ooey-gooey as a cinnamon roll.

Breadsmith is a small chain that looks and feels like similar chains from the 1990s---Caribou, Panera and so on. That said, the quality of its products is higher and it has a bunch of (not labeled) vegan options. Many of their items are kosher, too. I usually get a sourdough loaf ($6 or so), which is great: super fresh, perfectly made. Their babkas are pretty good at $4 each and are vegan by default. They're not quite as soft and ooey-gooey as a cinnamon roll, but they're still good. They also have vegan coffee cake and a ton of other options. Why only three stars? Principally because they don't label their vegan options. Every time you go, the staff doesn't know what's vegan and are happy to look things up for you (they have a binder with ingredients for hundreds of items), but there are often long lines and it would be annoying to make others wait. If Breadsmith made it easier for vegans to know what's what, and maybe added a few more decadent options (how about a peanut butter brownie?), it would get another star.

Sweet stop/shop! Clean, safe respite in a busy city! Covid precautions in place (and they are enforced here)! So many choices! Could decide on one, so split a pumpkin spice muffin & whole wheat apple/cranberry muffin. Both were fresh and made me want to go back and get more!

If you're not from Minnesota, you wouldn't know this is like a panera bread of the area. While the service was solid, the line moved at a good pace and they were covid safe; many of the more local spots are more enjoyable and have more character. The chocolate babka was enjoyable, but didn't wow me! But if your looking for a quick treat, or a non processed loaf of bread this would be a reliable spot.

Chocolate Babka

I literally come here just for the Chocolate Babka. If you have never had Chocolate Babka or heard of it, in the most common sense it is basically a chocolate version of a cinnamon roll. Breadsmith basically creates theirs just like a cinnamon roll with a rich chocolate and cinnamon crumb filling wrapped in a lightly sweet dough. It is a great and totally not healthy way to start you morning but hey, who is keeping track here? Indulge and treat yourself sometime if you see a Breadsmith, you will be happy you did.

A bit of today's delicious boule. It won't last long!

Delicious homemade breads with huge variety. Selection of sweet breads and daily specials. Scones and pretzle sticks are a favorite.

Contrary, coming into the intimate home shop in Saint Paul hit different. As a Saint Paul girly, I absolutely adore small businesses. Marc Heu has a great location across from the co-op on Dale. Due to the pastry lineup altering so frequently, there are no signs detailing the pastry product so there is definitely interaction with staff members to ensure you are getting what you want. The staff is attentive, dressed in uniform and ready to take orders with a note pad upon arrival. Fortunately both days I have went, there were no lines but I also understand lines are common here which is something to be aware of. Inside there are small circular tables to enjoy your pastry and or coffee in. I would not recommend bringing a laptop as this is a tiny shop with an emphasis on eating, mingling and departing. Other reviews will dink stars because they will say the pricing is high however, I think, the pricing is reasonable giving the high quality of baking effort and the quality of service provided. In addition, this is not a spot to come 24/7, rather, special moments such as a birthday, holiday or celebration. With that, I feel like the price is justified. Line or not - the pasty variety is outstanding! My husband and I had a donut with a spiced icing and some other filling and every bite we kept saying yum or oh my gosh this is so good. Inspired from France, you will 100% feel transported as the shop itself resembles France from the interior and obviously the baking follows suit. The display case is the center of attention when you walk in. I highly recommend stopping when in Saint Paul or purchasing at a coffee shop should you happen to see the line of Marc Heu. There are a few other stores in the area, otherwise, Grand Avenue is right up the road should you want to make a day of supporting local. Saint Paul is so lucky to have a slice of France in our city. Thank you!

I first discovered…read morethis bakery when I moved into the surrounding neighborhood, and have since visited more times than I can count. All of the donuts here are wonderful - there is a large selection of cake and raised donuts, with different flavors rotating throughout the year. I have ordered 2-3 dozen to bring into work multiple times, and each time I get questions and remarks on how fresh and delicious they are. If I am in the mood for savory, a personal favorite of mine is the breakfast croissants: warm and oozing with cheese, ham, or spinach! Although my go-to is the chocolate croissant; I eat it almost weekly! The bakery also makes and decorates special occasion cakes. I recently ordered a Princess Torte for a friend's birthday, and it was a hit! I always feel welcomed at this bakery, no matter how busy or quiet a day it is. You can truly feel the love and warmth (and smell the deliciousness!) of the staff and community that frequently return as regulars. The prices are some of the best around, too!

Great with coffee, great to walk in and get a couple dozen for a work event or gathering! The space is small and gives a very homey vibe but I believe they were bought out by Woullet recently. I popped in this morning to get 2 1/2 dozen cake donuts for a work event and had lovely and quick service. Donuts here are still super cheap which is amazing! There are lots of other baked goods to try here but I am so loyal to the cake donuts that I rarely want to venture out of my comfort zone. Many items in the display case look pretty delicious too though! Maybe one day I will branch out. Also conveniently close to Northern Coffeeworks for a proper latte :)

Such cute cupcakes and cake pops hand decorated. The staff was helpful with answering questions and brought the Midwest kindness. Note that if you are vegan or lactose intolerant, this may not be the spot for you (understandably). We ordered: Pesto parm focaccia: incredible! We sliced and served it with an Italian meal and an olive oil dipping sauce and it was the highlight. Soft, fluffy, and flavorful. -bbq bacon biscuit sandwiches: very good! You can get them to heat them in their oven for you or you do it at home. Just a slight sweetness and hint of BBQ, which seems to have coated the crisp bacon. The biscuit is buttery, fluffy, and perfectly crumbly. Monster cookies: the kids loved these. They are PB oatmeal cookies with M&Ms. great taste, but I wish they were softer rather than crunchy. -Cinnamon roll: the roll itself was huge and very soft. We wished there had been more of the cinnamon/sugar filling in it. However, the frosting was to die for! Just a hint of cream cheese, great consistency (not too thin or thick), and not overwhelmingly sweet. This spot was pricey, but with food costs, it likely needs to be for them to function. Always happy to support great local spots.
