Samples! They had samples of most things I wanted to try surprisingly. Also a small self-serve coffee station, which I think may have also been complimentary, but I don't know as I just had a cup elsewhere. I've always passed by this place thinking it was only a baking spot and they weren't selling items. Finally stopped by and they have a small selection of bread, focaccia, pastry, and coffees. The focaccia topped with tomato, onion and cheese was really good. Airy, moist, and tasty. Nice chewiness to it. Of course, oily. The almond croissant had a bit more chewiness and less crispy flakiness we like, but we try these everywhere we go and I'd say this comes in 2nd. The filling was nice (not too sweet) and somehow a bit custardy. I liked it, but doesn't yet beat my #1 almond croissant near home. Chocolate croissant was okay, but I would go with a different option if I had to choose. I give this 3 stars for the value as I might stop by again if passing by and in need of a snack when I'm not feeling particular cheap that day Lol. The slice of focaccia bread was the memorable item for us, but not somewhere I'd go out of the way for. Parking: Limited spaces right in front of the store off the main street. In search for artisan bread at a reasonable price. Dropping off My son at the Bull pen memorabilia on Center and this is near by. Greeted by a lovely young lady and great selection of freshly baked sourdough and more! I was lucky to gab a large sourdough baguette and a large round loaf. $15 was a surprisingly great price! Dropped by at noon for an almond crossiant, and wow, it's absolutely unreal. Perfectly crispy, delicate edges contrasted by a moist, almost custardy interior. None of it is trying to hard to be special and instead just relies on good technique, with just a enough sweetness to pair amazingly with a drink (although I ended up eating it all immediately by itself). It's a great value too - yes, it's $6 but it's pretty massive. This is by far the best crossiant I've ever had, and I'll be stopping back to try out their other items. Update: Came back to try a sandwich. I can see why some people say the baggettes are stale - the crust was pretty chewy, and the interior was dense. I'd say the texture much more closely resembles a sourdough than a baggette. I believe this texture isn't actually due to the bread being old, but because they're preassembled and wrapped in plastic. Still, its not a bad sandwich, and toasted up decently. It's also deceptively hefty and packed with meat, so for $10 it's a pretty good value for this area. read more

Tiny, brown, sweet, hints of rum, carmelized coat with a slightly chewy and slightly crunchy outside, soft and dense on the inside, and custardy in the middle. Although I've had them in other places none hit the same. Until... I discovered the Bread Bar! They are at the Little Italy Farmers market in SD on Saturdays and at the Santa Monica Farmers market. And indeed, their version of it is PERFECT!!! Gave me an O-face and sent me to heaven. Yummy. :: Backstory :: Cannele de Bordeaux are my favorite French pastry... my favorite pastry... in the entire world. They are hard to acquire as they are not always found in the states. I had driven by BreadBar several times but I was always too late (they close at 3:00). So I waited until I finally had a reason to go by when they were open. I really didn't know what to expect. I hadn't checked Yelp. BreadBar was more like my own drive-by discovery and I just had a feeling. They are primarily a wholesale bakery but fortunately they have a small case of excellent pastries. Inside you will find croissants of all types: butter, almond, ham & cheese, pan chocolate. All were nice and flaky and extremely good tasting. Then there is the bread. There was a very nice display of loaves of many types. Baguettes (sourdough and french), whole wheat, large and small round sourdough and rye. There were others as well. I selected a french baguette. It was so good! Nice chewy crust. My favorite. I was helped by a most delightful woman by the name of Jackie (I hope this is the correct spelling). She was both very pleasant and extremely knowledgeable about the bakery. In business for 15 years the yeast they use is their own and has been for many years. BreadBar are serious bakers. We were driving by so I asked my husband to pull over so that I could see if they had any bread or interesting items to buy. I walked in and browsed for a couple of minutes. I ended up not buying anything and thanked the person at the register. She gave me a baguette on my way out, which was very kind of her. But honestly, when we tried it that night we agreed that it was a little stale and tossed it out after a few bites. Perhaps other items are better, but can't really comment on them. These guys make some pretty good breads. I picked up a few butter croissants from them at the Little Italy Mercado on Sunday. They frequent to market. The croissants were quite good, even at room temperature. I ate them on the spot as I was walking around the Farmer's Market. They had a good flaky crust and buttery soft center. They tasted very good too. The young man running the stand was friendly enough. He was a little grumpy at first because he was not ready, but when I returned about 20 minutes later he was ready to roll and in better spirits. August Stop 8 Came by their stand at the San Diego Little Italy Farmer's Market! We were lucky to find this spot for a great breakfast! Got a famous cannele and a raspberry kouign amann. The cannele was an amazing sweet snack and could probably eat a dozen of those in one sitting! They were also selling fresh bread and an olive flatbread dish that looked so good. Came here once because I was walking by this spot after I got coffee. The worker here was very nice. I guess it was near closing time and I got a baguette and she said I can take another baguette for free! I got a croissant as well and it was decent. I didn't like their bread packaging because it had micro holes in it. I guess it keeps the bread fresh longer? The powdery white stuff on the crust of the bread got all over the car. As far as the bread goes; it was pretty fresh. It had good texture. I'd come back and try a different type of bread next time and some other of their baked goods. read more

Just to warn you, this is not a restaurant like their other locations. They call this location their "bake studio" because this is the wholesale location that distributes to the restaurants. They recently opened to the public and sell sandwiches, salads, and fresh baked bread. The salad and sandwiches are ready made and have a decent selection for the small little area that they had. They had roast beef, corned beef, turkey, and a club sandwich. For salads, I was expecting green salads but what they had was quinoa, lentil, potato, and white bean salads. I ordered a turkey sandwich and a dark chocolate baguette. We also got a complimentary mini cupcake. Of course I picked the red velvet one, and it was pretty good. They used beets for the coloring and even had small chunks in it. It was moist and tasty. The turkey sandwich was also delicious. It had arugula, spicy mustard, and some type of berry jam on ciabatta bread. The mixture of sweet and spicy was a nice change for a turkey sandwich. The dark chocolate baguette and tons of chocolate chips in it. The bread itself seemed like a mix of baguette and croissant. Had a family member do an online order with breadbar for a first birthday party celebration. Best experience ever! Got it delivered all the way to south orange county. The staff carefully packed the large order and sent it with decorations, a gift, and even a card!!! We felt the love and cannot believe the thoughtfulness from Breadbar and the staff. We are on a road trip with our Airstream across the USA and stopping at bakeries in pretty much every town/city we stay. We loved Breadbar. I just keep thinking good thing I don't live here. I can't speak to any of the concerns about the parking lot -- I had my order delivered -- but I can speak to the quality of the goods. The brioche buns had such a highly polished finish to them that I could nearly see my reflection. The canelés, while lacking the crunch of the shell that I prefer, were very tasty, and are worthy of a second order. But the baguette! I put a little butter and cheese on a piece, and it instantly transported me to Paris. Tout simplement fabuleux! The customer service was great -- I got a call telling me that the pastels de nata were not up to standard, and asking me if I would like to substitute canelés. I drove here because they sell gluten free breads and being that I can't eat bread because I have celiacs disease. 40 minute drive for me . We drove the distance. At a whopping $18 + per loaf it is above our budget but I can see as a treat it is worth it. Wish it was more affordable as I would definitely stock up. I absolutely love this bread bakery. I only wish they had longer hours. All of the breads are made with a natural sourdough starter, which helps to keep the gut microbiome healthy. My husband and I really like the Sourdough Pullman. Their scones are the best I've ever eaten. You can ask to get any loaf of bread sliced. I'm very picky about my bread. I'm originally from Eastern Europe and we like our bread to be hand made, to be a heavier heartier loaf, and made with high quality ingredients by experienced bakers. Grocery bread doesn't do it for me. And even grocery store bakeries don't measure up. BreadBar has a lot of bread options and I'm excited to try every one of them eventually. Although I'm a fan of the BreadBar in Century City, this location "a bake studio" distribution center is not the same... I got raisin croissants and an assortment of small sized muffins (banana, coconut carrot, apple bran, blueberry, chocolate chip). They really have a very small, limited selection. The baked goods were inexpensive (75cents a muffin) but it's because they're not fresh.
