In the book, Save the Deli, both Sy Ginsburg corned beef and Bread Basket Deli were mentioned. Of course, I had to visit. Zingerman's was also mentioned but since I've been there many times before, there was no immediate impetus to go. There are several locations of this deli; the one closest to me is conveniently located in Livonia. The small parking lot was empty and I was half-convinced that the deli was closed. But I soon learned that traffic comes in waves as the location quickly filled up with groups of three and four piling out of cars. The line moved quickly as the counter person took orders and bagged food. Someone even ordered ten sandwiches, to go. Corned beef or pastrami? There was no question after reading the book. I had the Dinty Moore, a deliciously fatty corned beef with lettuce, tomato, and Russian dressing triple-decker sandwich. The toast disintegrated under the weight of the thinly-sliced meat. While I bear part of the blame - I took my order to go so the bread became soggy, I think a heartier bread would have solved the problem. With such a large sandwich, there was no need for dinner. And if this can be believed, some sandwiches were even larger. A fresh and a traditional pickle spear were included with the meal; I definitely preferred the former. read more

I have been to bread basket before and their food/ soup was FANTASTIC!! BUT We tried this bread basket here in Livonia and it was absolutely terrible. We got 3 different types of soup and they all tasted very bland - no flavor and the chicken noodle soup did not have chicken and the noodles tasted old. I do not recommend going to this location there are better ones. My husband got the corn beef sandwich and the meat tasted old and not like the other bread baskets. I tried this place for the first time after hearing about their corn beef egg roles and I must say that it was delicious. I ordered online which is very convenient. The corn beef egg roll was nice and hot and the honey mustard on the side was a great way to top it off! I also ordered the regular corn beef special "combo" (Fries and drink "can drink") with light cheese and it was just as good as the egg roll but the egg role was wayyyyyyy better! The pickles that come with wasn't the best though. Also I would suggest that they give 2 corn beef rolls for that price since they're so small. I never heard of this place until a co-worker told me about it. I had to give it a try, so off I went for lunch with a friend. They have two doors - one is an entrance and the there is for an exit... simple eh? Once you enter, get in line if you want to order to take out. if you want the food to-go, I would recommend that you call in your order so by the time you get there, it's ready to go! Otherwise, seat yourself down and they will come and take your order. Once the take the order, you pay first then they will call out the order into the kitchen. They do not have fountain drinks, so when you order your drink, you'll get it by the can. I ordered Corned Beef with 1000 Island dressing, swiss cheese and coleslaw (17 on the menu)... along with extra meat! Oh... and diet coke for drink. Within about five minutes, we got our food. This was my first time, so I know I went overboard by ordering extra meat... and boy did I have hard time eating the sandwich! I had to eat some of the meat by itself before I was able to eat the sandwich - I loved it. Hot and tasty... I would highly recommend it! As for the pickle, I would skip that, but it comes with the sandwich... the pickle wasn't that good... We have been supporting Livonia Bread Basket for more than 15 years. Ordered today via Grubhub...our favorite delivery service. Corned beef sandwiches had dry old bread...corned beef was chewy (like liver)....never happened before. Tried an order of fried pickles..first time.....overpriced and very little batter...basically identical to pickle wedges that come with sandwiches. I called and shared concerns with a female manager . She simply said "okay". We have been loyal thru pandemic to our fave eateries...all we want is same quality food as in past. I have only been to this restaurant twice, and both times they messed up my order. The first time it was 1 sandwich out of the 2 I ordered. The second time both sandwiches were completely wrong, so I assume they just gave me someone else's order. The manager ( lady ) I spoke with was rude and not very helpful. I purchased the sandwiches on my way to a sporting event and was unable to return, but called and you would think I did something wrong. I got all kinds of excuses from, it's lunch time, we are busy, to its a new person and he doesn't know the job yet. All I wanted was a refund, but in her frustration she just hung up on me. Sandwiches are huge and full of meat. Definitely not stingy. A bit pricey but worth it for the size. No asking where's the meat at the Bread Basket. Their sandwiches are volume pleasing even for big eaters. Their shop is counter seating diner style. I couldn't stray from what I was told they're known for so I ordered the classic Rueben. I actually took 1/2 of it back to my hotel and it was still good the next day, bread aside. I am going to review this as it is the best corned beef in the area. I cut my teeth on the legendary Ben and Georges and when they closed we discovered this gem, not quite the same but it eased our hearts a bit. This is a limited review as I only ever order one thing in this place and I am not willing to ever change up even to help you out. I am a #3 Corned Beef, period. It comes on triple decker white toast with swiss, coleslaw and russian dressing. I know, I know, white toast but try it and you will never go back to rye. Trust me. You taste corned beef in all its glory with nothing else vying for your attention. I see a few people ordering the lean or extra lean variety in here but don't wuss out. Corned beef is not health food, it is utter deliciousness studded with juicy bits of fat. I am not saying indulge every day but c'mon people if you are going to go for it, go for the gusto. Eat only half the sandwich like I do instead of somehow trying to make it healthier. Really you will be hard pressed to finish the whole thing unless you are a huge eater anyhow. My mother and late grandmother are fans of the pastrami version of the #3 but except for James no one in my family deviates from #3. James is just stubborn. He is very pissy about the fact they do not carry cheddar here and therefore will not order anything in silent protest, which is fine as I get my sammie to go. He says the roast beef was nice on the one sammie he did try in here but without cheddar he will never try it again, even though we take the thing home and he could ummmm add some cheddar of his own. Silly man does not like corned beef or pastrami at any rate so I think maybe the Breadbasket should have put the kibosh on him at any rate rather than the other way around but I digress. The sides in here are ok. Nothing special. I do highly recommend the New Pickles, a less aged pickle that has the snap of a cucumber but a good fresh dill flavor. 11/24/13 We will never, EVER return to this place. I ordered a small LEAN corned beef on rye with mustard. I received a fatty corned beef sandwich. I don't like fat on my lunchmeat which is why I order and pay more for it be lean. I showed it to the woman working at the counter, who immediately saw it was fatty. She apologized and said they would remake it. Then I start hearing the sandwich maker complaining loudly. "She's never had fat on the lean sandwich? What does SHE know". This is my go-to place for pastrami. They have two sizes of sandwiches and I've learned from experience to order a standard.. the larger size can feed two people. Patrons will enjoy the combination sandwiches such as the 17-1/2 corned beef or the 18-1/2 pastrami. My pastrami was lean tasty. The Livonia store is on a busy corner for traffic and awkward to get to coming from the North. Plan accordingly. No seating was available at the time of this review. Closest we're going to get to NYC Jewish deli near Garden City. While writing this review, I'm lulled by the sound of corned beef on the slicer. The smells hit me before I opened the door, freshly made to order sandwiches wrapped in white paper, held together with a rubber band. They give ya 4 pickles with an order, 2 that are briney in pickle flavor, 2 that are just barely out of their cucumber days, and those 2 are my favorite. Admittedly, I've only ordered the #17 1/2, corned beef, slaw, cheese on fresh bread. Accidentally, I've had a turkey sandwich on onion roll dropped in my order, it was like winning the lottery. They have daily soups, cold sides like potato and macaroni salad (our personal faves), desserts, and canned pops like Faygo and Dr. Browns RootBeer. The only downside is making a left outta the parking lot, but that isn't always a problem. As a girl that's trying to break up with bread, this place makes me long for the comforts of said relationship. We sat at the counter an the entertainment from Shelly was a perfect addition to the flair of this place. I get the standard corned beef sandwich on rye with mustard and I don't think it can be beat. This time we tried the sweet potato fries and they were also pretty tasty, especially with mustard on them. They almost tasted like corn dogs oddly enough. My first trip was the egg salad. It was ok... a little dry for something that shouldn't be. I walked away thinking it was too pricey for something that wasn't so great, too, and wondered if I'd ever be back. Well, I gave them another chance today and ordered the beef brisket on rye with a few little extras. EXCELLENT choice. It redeemed this place in my eyes from the first bite on. I have a love-hate relationship with delis. I really do enjoy a good corned beef or pastrami sandwich with potato salad/coleslaw and some kind of dessert at the end if my sweettooth acts up. Bread Basket is not that different from similar places I've been to, but that's also part of the problem. When you look at the menu, you're already turned off by the exorbitant prices. All the sandwiches push $10, and the sides and desserts (many of which are basic and not all made in house) are also expensive. One time I decided to get a cup of soup with matzo ball. It didn't even have chicken in it, just chicken broth with one matzo the size of a ping pong ball. I could have made something like that at home and it wouldn't have cost me $5. The actual sandwiches are decent and satisfying, assuming they don't mess up the bread or if they forget to toast it. The staff themselves are not bad either but they just don't look enthusiastic and that's a turn off when you're trying to enjoy a meal. I feel like some go to delis more for the experience than simply just the food, and I myself feel the same way at times But nothing I eat from here ever makes me say "wow I've never had something this good" or make me think that I couldn't replicate this at home. read more

I usually have all good thing's to say about the bread basket. Well today wasn't the best experience. I ordered the chicken salad sandwich on pumpernickel. And my cousin ordered the turkey pastrami to go. I got back to my desired location to sit down and eat and it turns out they gave my cousin the wrong sandwich. I open my sandwich up and it looked great but had way to much Mayo. I know that chicken salad is made with mayo but it was ridiculous how much they had and it took the flavor away from the chicken and amazing bread. And for some reason there was bacon on my sandwich and usually when I order this sandwich there never is bacon. Not gonna lie it was a nice touch I mean you can't get mad at bacon lol. Usually the Bread Basket does it really well but this last experience made me really mad. Also I will add the I paid 11.00 dollars for this sandwich which seemed to be way to much money. Had lunch there today....mmmm So for those that do not know, its a counter diner, no tables, no frills, just sit down and order. They have carry-out as well. I have been here before for lunch and like always, this place was very busy. The service was fast and friendly (in their own special way), and the place was clean. The air wasn't working in this place and it was like 95 degrees outside according to my thermometer on my car, even so this place was still great. I ordered the mini United Meat sandwich (a 2 oz less version of the regular United sandwich), it was fresh, warm and tasty. The flavor was outstanding and shows why they have earned the ranking as the best corn beef in Detroit. I recommend giving this place a crack, if you want a great sandwich that will certainly fill you up (if you like) but you more likely will be taking a to-go package home with you. Wet - comes with Russian dressing. Extra Wet - mucho Russian dressing. New vs Old Pickles - new are more like a crunchy cucumber and you can specify what you'd like. Lean - they'll trim more of the fat from the corned beef (wish I knew that one going in). Anyway, I ordered the #17 1/2, which was corned beef on rye with swiss cheese, coleslaw and Russian dressing. It was very good, but could have had a bit more of the fat trimmed off. It was $8.95 for the sandwich, but I thought that was a fair price for this monster. I was a vegetarian for over a decade. It's only within the past few years that I've started eating any sort of beef again. So when I have a craving for corned beef, it's a very specific craving. Who am I to deny it at this point? After a dozen meat-free years, a big ol pile o' beef sometimes hits the spot! The corned beef was indeed pretty darn good. And on a Reuben, there's an astonishing amount of it! It was like a meat explosion -- corned beef that refused to be tamed or limited by the confines of bread! All in all, it was a solid sandwich, but not one than made me think "oh my lord!" like the corned beef at Mudgie's. The slaw seemed really plain. I saved the half I couldn't fit in my belly, though, so I obviously liked it well enough! The staff was friendly - joking with the regulars and calling me sweetie (in a non-creepy way) and the other sandwiches sounded good. So, if I found myself in the area again and pretty hungry, I'd try something else, for sure. I'm just not sure I'd make a beeline here first with so many other deli and sandwich options. read more

We stopped into this Bread Basket Deli on our way to an event because we've been to other Bread Baskets and they were amazing--actually the best deli's we've ever been to. We planned our dinner that night at the Bread Basket in Livonia because it was on our way to our event. We'll never go back. When we got up to the door, we almost turned away because the windows on the place were so grimy you couldn't see through them and the general atmosphere was gloomy and depressing. The seating area was roped off, but there was one very tall table in the corner where the woman behind the counter said we could sit and eat. It was raining hard and we were hungry, and it was too late to go anywhere else, so we stayed and ordered. We paid $50 for two of us to eat. We don't mind paying good money for a meal, but the food was bad. The table in the corner with the tiny surface area where we ate faced dirty windows that we couldn't see out of. There were two beat-up bar stools with the vinyl upholstery torn off one of them and the inner foam coming out of it for us to sit on. People were coming in and out and ordering, but the music blaring from behind the counter was so loud that everyone had to shout so loud to be heard that it was annoying. The guy who I presume was the cook kept coming out from behind the counter and going in and out of the front door, which was right next to where we were sitting. My order was wrong. I ordered tuna salad on bread not toasted, and the bread was toasted and greasy. I asked for no lettuce or tomato, and the sandwich had some slimy lettuce on it that I peeled off and didn't eat. I asked for double Swiss on the sandwich, but I couldn't detect any Swiss cheese because it had all melted into the greasy bread. I ordered fries and they were hard and cold, as if they were old and had been re-warmed and then left to sit and petrify. My fiance ordered a corned beef sandwich on an onion roll. I will say that it was loaded with corned beef, but the only positive thing he had to say about it was that the flavor was there. That was about it. We had to get to our event, so we ate and left. We couldn't get out of there fast enough. We left very disappointed and will never return there. I had stomach issues for about a week after eating there, and every time we drive past that building it rekindles memories of that terrible meal. The Bread Basket is awesome. A little pricey, but the sandwiches are FAT! And when I say FAT, I'm talking about Fat Albert FAT. The amount of meat you get on any given sandwich is ridiculous. Obviously, it's already been said. But the corned beef is the first thing you have to try when visiting The Bread Basket. There is absolutely no fat what so ever. That seems to be the problem around the metro Detroit area. Finding pastrami and corned beef that doesn't contain a lot of fat, and is well cut, seems to be hard to find. The choices are amazing at The Bread Basket too! Ton's of fresh and well made deli sandwiches! Don't overlook the fried food either. The Bread Basket has some of the best fried jumbo shrimp.
