THIS PLACE IS DANGEROUS !! (In a good way of course....) I love browsing through all the goodies they have on display. I have tried the lemon croissant, chocolate croissant and the fruit tart- all of which are to die for! The bread is fantastic as well but the chocolate croissants are my favorite! I am absolutely livid!!! I ordered a plum tart on December 11 for Christmas Eve and when I got there today to pick up, no plum tart, so now I am scrambling for Christmas. Left my phone number and name (so they had the ability to call me). I even went in YESTERDAY (12/23) to say I had a plum tart to pick up today and to double check hours (so opportunity then to say there was a problem). What they told me when I went in today, is they were out of plums. Seriously??? How about a call with an option so I could order something else? And they had NOTHING available to replace the tart. To the reviewer below who said it's expensive, I don't know what they are talking about.. we found it very reasonable even for lower NH prices (relative to Boston). Great place, if you want to feel like you're in Europe, visiting a store side bakery, you'll feel like that here. All the breads are baked without the excessive fake ingredients so they have natural pure way they feel and taste, like they should. Some of the pastries are cool too, in particular the turnovers, cookies, croissants, and sticky buns. Certainly my bakery of choice in all of Merrimack County. Street parking only and only a few tables in the front of the shop for nibbling on your selection - but it is divine. *Sandwiches for lunch!! Their bread is baked in-house....friggin' YUM! Great selection and all are filling and flavorful. *Chocolate cake......phenomenal (rich and moist). This layered masterpiece is what my brother asks for his birthday celebration every year. *Their Fruit Tart has been a birthday tradition for the last ten years of my life. This dessert is fresh, sweet and creamy. A fruit kaleidoscope atop creamy flan custard held in a shortbread crust....how do you say "no?" -you don't. I order the large tart with blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, pineapple, and kiwi....and the plate is clean within 48 hours. *Croissants of perfection - delicate and buttery and take me back to vacationing in Southern France. Go figure: the baker and owner of B&C is a very skilled European. My sister use to work at Bread and Chocolate and while the bread is amazing and the pastries are delicious,the facility is in no way kept up to health code standards.All ingredients used in the pastries are left uncovered,soap is not used to wash dishes only water,and there is a discusting amount of ants in the back room as well as flys practically everywhere.This places needs a thorough health inspection. read more

Their fruit custard is my favorite. Buttery crust, rich custard, but the fruit on top keeps it feeling light. What also makes this place great is that it is also located right next to a local bookstore. So you can grab something sweet and then sit down with a good book. Bread and Chocolate is phenomenal, and is definitely my go to spot in Concord for lunch, bread, and especially dessert. There are a wide variety of cakes and fruit tarts, and most recently cupcakes (very fancy cupcakes). The fruit tart is a huge favorite of mine, and is well worth the price for any occasion.. If you are in the mood for a bite sized dessert, you can pick up mini slices of cake, mini tarts, rum balls, a variety of croissants (both sweet and savory), muffins and my ultimate favorite, sticky buns. In addition to dessert there are also a wide variety of sandwiches for lunch, including a delicious Italian, corn beef and coleslaw, roasted veggie, and a delicious, delicious BLT, amongst others. The choice seemed sparse and the prices high so we turned around and left. I can't say if the food was good or bad but by 11:30 on a Saturday they looked wiped out and the pastries left didn't seem worth the price. The cafe looks cute enough and there are some tables but the food cases seems dingy and dark. All in all, I couldn't see spending 3 bucks on a small eclair or tiny piece of cake. I guess Market Basket donuts or homemade are better options for a cheapskate like me. read more

This bakery is absolutely wonderful. I have stopped for coffee and a treat for over 2 years now, and have never had anything short of wonderful. From the delightfully flaky croissants (which incidentally is how I found this place, we stayed at a Bed and Breakfast in New London and I had asked the owner of the Inn where the Croissants came from, and he told me "Always, no where else but Bread and Chocolate! So i had to go..that was over 2 years ago :) to the delicious freshly baked breads, muffins, and sticky buns.. Fantastic cakes, fruit flan tarts and pastries to the sandwiches made daily.. Pure delight. The service is excellent and the atmosphere is always so pleasant. I wish I could start my day here every day. Oh! and I LOVE a good cup of coffee, and can honestly say, that cup after cup, it is consistently terrific. Truly a gem. read more

Before I was diagnosed with a host of auto-immune disorders that now mean I can no longer eat bread (well, with gluten that is), chocolate, dairy or soy, I LOVED this place. As in every single birthday or reason to celebrate was done so with pastry and/or cake from here. It was also my daughter's and my place to stop in and catch an afternoon snack. I can't say enough good things about this place. Their cakes are superb (the Florida cake is my favorite--not too sweet, dense cake with fresh glazed fresh fruit on top!!), their breads, croissants, cookies and other pastries are top notch. Don't miss the sandwiches that this place makes at lunchtime. My favorite is the Italian--two sandwich halves layered with fresh meats, beautifully constructed on two very long slices of freshly made bread--easily enough for two people!! One of my favorite places in Concord! Cutest little French themed bakery ever. They make several varieties of sandwiches with fresh baked bread that you can take away with you from the case, or you can place a custom order. Their pastries are divine! They have the most gorgeous fruit tarts you've ever seen. And you have to try a chocolate filled croissant...YUM! You have to park on Main Street, but this place is totally worth it. Be careful. I ordered a cake for a bridal shower, paid in advance for the cake when the order was placed, and had to ask for a receipt so show the order was made. Should have known this was a bad omen. The day of the shower, when I went into Bread and Chocolate to pick up the cake - the staff at the bakery couldn't have been less helpful. Not only had they not made a cake, but the order somehow was lost and when I produced the receipt the woman at the register explained that the receipt wasn't the least bit helpful as there was no cake. So...the young girl offered to get Franz the owner, who started out to the counter to talk with me, turned and never showed his face. The woman kept asking me what I expected them to do. In their words, "orders get lost, it happens." Well, when you order a cake from a reputable business you expect to get what you pay for. After much arguing, which made me feel like I was the one being unreasonable, expecting to leave with some type of a cake for the shower that was beginning now in 15 minutes. They told me they would put something together if I could come back in 30 minutes. I had no choice. A friend picked up the cake - it was dry, poorly decorated and very disappointing. Needless to say, all the people at the shower heard the cake story and will no longer count on Bread and Chocolate for their party needs. read more

I've been coming here for 18 years and have never been disappointed! Every year for my birthday I get a custom made fruit tart and it is always amazing! Their sandwiches are great too! I come here about once or twice weekly and the staff are always friendly. Their croissants rival the ones I've had in Paris. Best place to get pastries in Concord hands down! read more

Stopped in today with a friend. Smelled like heaven in there. Girl working the counter was super friendly & joked with us as we decided which treat to pick out. I had a chocolate chip walnut cookie. I ordered a cake from here, went to pick it up. I received the cake the entire order was wrong. It was supposed to be white frosting it was chocolate, had to argue with employees to get it done right. The writing looked like a daycare stdent did it, it was horrible looked like they picked it up at walmart and brought it in. Finally they took it back in and all they did was put white frosting on top of the chocolate, and the writing was still preschool writing. This cake was for a wedding shower and they had thereputation of doing nice work. that reputation is wrong, they didnt offer a discount or anything to make it better, all I got was attitude. I picked up the cake the counter girl called out the baker and whispered to him it was cracked down the middle and his response was close the box and let her take it. I had to take it then because I was running out of time and had to get to the shower. I won't go back there and will not recommend it to anyone. read more

Stopped in after an austere but delicious lunch at Sunny's, so had plenty of room for dessert. The best around, another old school baker, bread and pastries are the best. I had an eclair, a raspberry-coconut square, and some rolled cake with a strawberry on top, it had a touch of liquor, yum! The baking is the best, but the shop needs a face-lift, you can hardly read the sign hanging out front, the pastry cases are 1960's at best and don't hold that much. A lot of product is stacked on some back shelves so you can't even see them well. The light fixtures, tables and chairs all need an update. I'm sure the owner thinks he can't afford it, but he should raise his prices 20% to cover the costs. Come on a lunch sandwich for just over $5.00, you can't go to any sandwich shop for that. And in Concord no less, that is the capitol of the state, people can afford it. All the rich live near the capitol, that's where "we" all the towns in NH sends our tax money and have it disappear.
