Cheeseburgers
Tony R.

Went in today cuz it's Wednesday and that means $1.50 cheeseburgers!!! Such a deal! Longtime Brayz customer, but for some reason these burgers tasted extra kickin today with that coverage of delicious sautéed onions and the best pickles around! Maybe it was that discount price that made them more tasty. Fries are legit too! And the waitresses are a hoot!

Belly Buster Jr with a side of fries -- hit the spot!

I'm staying with a friend close to Detroit this weekend. So, unfamiliar with the area as I've only been here one other time and in search of something yummy to eat, I ordered food from Brayz via Doordash after finding it on Yelp. Let me say this: it was affordable, it hit the spot, and it had an old school vibe you don't always see anymore from burger joints. A lot of spots like to try and elevate their food or the dining experience and Brayz, based on what I saw on Yelp, seems to be more focused on the basics and boy did they deliver. The fries were crispy and they were crinkle cut which is always a welcome surprise. I ordered a small and the portion was surprisingly big, too -- no complaints here! I opted for a "belly buster" which I'm assuming is their take on a Whopper, but it's dressed like an In-N-Out burger: thousand island dressing, onions, lettuce, tomato. All the ingredients tasted fresh and complimented the beefy, cheesy goodness. It's definitely a smashburger style hamburger they serve here, but it's what I prefer and therefore I was really pleased. There was an option to buy a sack of cheeseburgers which is definitely a throwback to burger joints from the 40's, 50's, and 60's if you know your burger history. From the looks of things, those burgers are smaller and more basic, probably closer to a classic McDonald's burger, but worth noting (and honestly after this experience it may be something I opt to do if I go with a group in the future). My food was even delivered in wrapped in non-descript wax paper -- not a lot of places take things back to basics like this and it adds to the charm. This spot is definitely a dive and is going to be a no frills type of experience for those who visit or order, but if you're like me and you just want a purist experience, then this is a wonderful option. Highly recommend.

So never again. The fry's were old. The onion rings were burnt. The worst part and why I should have asked for my money back. The lady put on gloves then she touched all over the card tap machine. Then she used those same gloves to unpack every slice of cheese and put it in a pile. Then she took her gloves off to pack the sandwiches. Everyone knows that when you wear gloves, you have to wash your hands or apply a new pair of gloves. Because when you sweat while having those gloves on bacteria builds up so now every sandwich that this woman just packaged, has bacteria on it. It gets worse, she touched the inside of the paper that was going on the sandwiches with the other hand that she used to touch all over the tap machine, and she never washed her hands in between any of this. Just a very unsanitary scene.

Ordered an Irish omelet, veggie omelet, no cheese or tomatoes and added turkey sausage, hash browns with green peppers and onions added and cooked well done. We both got raisin toast. $40.48. Extra $1 for each egg order due to the bird flu and shortages. Up charge on egg dishes is on the door coming into the diner. The Irish omelet was good on its own without any condiments added to it. The veggie omelet was good, good amount of turkey sausage for heh added side. The raisin toast was light and billowy. Not bad. The service here is friendly, quick and efficient. They're able to turn tables over pretty quickly. The food was out in a flash.

The place is old school. But clean. Everyone is super friendly, and staff knows everyone (but me) by name. And boy do they have a brisk carry out business. Breakfast is fantastic! Soups are equally as good. And here is how you know this place is quality. I order my eggs soft scrambled. This place nailed it twice (yes I came back 2 days later). I don't think I have ever gotten soft scrambled done properly at a breakfast joint. Sign of proper cooking technique. Found my new favorite breakfast joint!

Spots like The Clique (though it's more expensive than it used to be), Marcus Hamburgers, Hygrade Deli, Colombo's Coney Island, and the Motown Grill on Van Dyke Hashbrowns fits in well with this group and I was happy to find it, as spots like these are increasingly becoming rare in the city, especially north of West Grand Blvd. You either have a very luxurious spot with wait service or it's take out only. Hashbrowns does its part to fill that void. Hashbrowns menu is awesome. I love seafood for breakfast and they provide it. Catfish, Salmon, and even Tilapia are all available here. Again, you're not often seeing this type of selection at a diner in the city. I ordered the Salmon Crocquettes with Eggs and Grits and it was very, very good. First off l, I loved the Croquettes. They were fried evenly with a lot of fish and a little bit of bell pepper for flavor. Most importantly, they weren't salty! They just let the ample portion of good quality fish carry them and I really enjoyed them. My grits were nice and smooth and with a nice bit of flavor. They weren't lumpy or mealy at all. The eggs were very good too. It was a great portion of food that easily carried me to dinner (no small feat). I loved the restaurants atmosphere. It's like a smaller, more low key version of the Clique. When I'm eating somewhere mid day, mid week, I just want to be able to gather my thoughts and get my food. Hashbrowns got the job done. Also, the wait service was awesome. I got my coffee and water filled a bunch and everyone was extremely pleasant. It's a neighborhood spot that everyone respects and the vibe was appreciated. It's on Conant street, which is one of my favorite spots in the city. It's a nice little hub of activity that I feel gets overlooked, with lots of restaurants lining the street. Loved it and will be back!
