Queen Brat is Nancy, and she is the mastermind and store owner. They have a great selection of clothes that can be trendy or campy, depending on how you style them. Men's wear is casual with bold visual designs on the shirts. Unisex clothing. She has a remarkable sense of style, with the women's wear the true star here. Statement pieces galore, and the accessories to go with them. It really is a store for all ages. In addition to the clothing, stockings, socks and underwear, there is a gift selection which is as eclectic as the store and it's location. Costume jewelry, accessories, delightful small press books and items that reflect a taste and style that turns heads your way. All unique. Reasonably priced, many small manufacturers. Free street parking across the street, in front of the a historic cemetary (it used to be a flower shop) is available. 25 years at this location, get i while you can. read more

Small Business Saturday (a week from today) is WAY more important to me than Black Friday. In fact, I just got the jump on both, but this year Brat's fabulously culled, cool inventory http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/brat-santa-monica?select=i9WN-IaOw5Q9xEe54pSa8w#cOi64qZP_uZ6-cQpoxtOwg http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/brat-santa-monica?select=i9WN-IaOw5Q9xEe54pSa8w#itNdgbHSVO12NzOGyJv08A http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/brat-santa-monica?select=i9WN-IaOw5Q9xEe54pSa8w#pd3PQcFKuNf1olf-lxCs5w http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/brat-santa-monica?select=i9WN-IaOw5Q9xEe54pSa8w#ZJ94LG25qoVB-I6EpCsZvA http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/brat-santa-monica?select=i9WN-IaOw5Q9xEe54pSa8w#E86y0CqjY8TQ3NCYd58mcA made it difficult to choose. So, I ended up doing the right thing, bought all the brats on my list a Brat gift certificate. I'm telling ya, come Hanukkah and Christmas there won't be a disappointed one among them! Think two gifts in one, a dollar amount (always includes tax) AND a fun-filled shopping trip to Brat, where dollars go further, to get what they really want. Whew! That done, now I can keep my manners up and stockpile some Bratty hostess gifts like Anne Taintor tea towels or Chill Pill ice cube molds : ) read more

Across from the cemetery I just reviewed, is a lovely store called Brat!! I love this place, Nancy the owner I have known for years! Remember NANA'S? Yep, she is awesome. She was also the owner of that company as well. She always has unique and different clothes, puff sleeves, a personal favorite, gifts, books, and more. Her store always has the hip more unusual things you will not find in any mall. Her shop is a joy as is she. She always advertises all the really cool upcoming events. She sells tickets sometimes to some events like Lucha Va Voom, Electric Daisy Carnival, and some other events. Her store is good for both guys and gals! There is a little something for everyone! A must when you are in Santa Monica. She even carries a line of clothing for the little ones. She opens by 12.00 noon, I would check the hours before you go.She is a fantastic woman and has been in the alternative scene for years, she has been in the clothing industry as long and she knows her stuff. I love and adore Nancy, her store is a Gem. She and her businesses have been a part of this community as long as I have been here. She has watched many of us grow and change. I have been shopping at her stores since I was thirteen years old. I am lucky and grateful she and her clothing stores have continued to be a part of my life for so many years! Hat's off to BRAT STORE!!! You can check out the BRAT website for more information about upcoming events. She always seems in the know. NANCY RULES! read more

Fabulous shop. It's very Pin-Up and Rockabilly heavy. And there are oodles of every day staples, like tees, cardigans, leggings, etc. Also, it's NOT kitsch. I think somewhere along the way this word has become confused with a positive adjective. Folks, kitsch isn't good. And Brat isn't kitschy. I'd accept an argument regarding Hello Kitty, but that makes up about 3% of the store. GO FOR THE 50'S DRESSES. And go back because, as another review stated, Nancy does amazing things for our local community and her lovely little shop deserves to thrive. read more

Had dinner plans in the neighborhood and wanted a gift for my friend who is pregnant. Started looking for a baby type gift and what a pleasant experience Not many "baby" things but found a few things none the less. I am guessing the woman who helped me was the owner. She's great! and very helpful. Another future stop for me read more

Such a fun exciting store! Very vintage rockabilly style clothes. I just love wearing things not everyone has. Worth the trip for those looking for a little fun. read more

Probably the best store on the Westside, if not the world. Super cute clothes for kids and grownups (at totally affordable prices), toys, gifts, jewelry, and more. Need Abe Lincoln socks, David Bowie books, or a saucy beret? Nancy finds all the amazing stuff so all you need to do is show up. Want to support independent businesses? Shop at Brat. read more

I love this store so much! Been coming in for years, haven gotten so many beautiful pencil skirts and dresses! Totally find something cool every time I go, and always find cool gifts for my friends. Can't wait to go back :) read more

The coolest store ever! Great clothes, accessories in punk/goth style. Heritage, glamor, retro and soooo cool

Got a call this morning from a producer, asking if I could be on a set tomorrow. Yeah, totally; no problem. "Black swing dress, please - semi-formal, vintage or vintage repro. Something you can move in." Crap. All my black dresses are fitted or full-length. Plus, rent was just due and I'm balling on a budget. Where am I going to find a black swing dress for one dollar sign in this amount of time? I was already in Santa Monica for a rehearsal, so I Yelped some nearby stores using the keyword "pinup." Enter Brat. Walked in. Found a black swing/wrap dress. Thirty bucks. Tried it on. It fit. Bought it. Also, the rest of the store is adorable. I'll be back. read more

I am so glad I finally took the time to pull over on my drive to Pico and take a look inside Brat! Located in a nondescript section of 14th street, Brat is tiny and easy to miss. Once inside, it's a visual feast! The small space is jam-packed with tons of fun goodies, from keychains to witty t-shirts to hamburger earmuffs. (Was trying so hard to think of someone whose birthday was coming up so I could have an excuse to buy those.) I believe that Nancy was the one who was in the store today when I went in. She was so warm and helpful. I asked her about Paul Frank pajamas, and she explained the whole system of Paul Frank products (faschinating, by the way), and showed me what she had. I'll definitely be back to peruse the small goodies and accessories as well as the t-shirts and sweatshirts. As far as the more serious clothes (dresses, blouses, pants, etc), I wasn't too sure about the quality of some of them, but considering how unique they were I think it's worth a bit of a trade off. read more

Welcome to subculture!! Driving up & down 14th St, I always pass by Brat. Last year for Christmas my GF knew what I was getting her because she helped pick it out. But I said "Oh Hell No!! She needs to be surprised when she opens a gift." So into Brat I went, told the owner Nancy I was looking for a gift and she took it from there. We talked sizes, styles, & colors. Went from dresses, hats, & sweaters. At the end of it all I bought her a black cardigan by "Rock Steady" a very well made sweater to boot. Brat was a very good choice for me and it continues to be. How did the sweater work out you say? She loved it so much and she had never heard of this store. So she asked me to take her. Lo & behold she walked out of there with a bag in her hand with more stuff. PS: last week bought some cool horseshoe earrings. She loved them! If I screw up Christmas this year the earrings already covered me. Thank You Brat!!! read more

What a cute little store this is. I almost feel like it belongs more on Melrose Blvd or SOMEWHERE in the weird eclectic sea of Hollywood. Well, maybe that's me being selfish because it would bring the Brat closer to me... it's probably the only Brat that I want closer to me. The Brat Store offers an array of very unique clothing pieces and accessories, and other fun stuff. By fun stuff I mean silly magnets (I'm a huge fan of those!) and the band-aids shaped like bacon strips as one Yelper mentioned - though I personally liked the band-aids that looked like yellow caution tape better - perfect for me since I'm such a walking disaster! My cousin and I happened to come on a day where Nancy was selling some SWEET outerwear for 50% off the marked price. I mean seriously. I could have had me a sweet belted peacoat for just over $30. If it weren't for the fact that I'm SERIOUSLY trying to stay on a budget now, AND I needed to buy something for my friend's birthday before I bought anything for myself, I would have TOTALLY gone buck wild on that. I was SOOOO jealous when my cousin was sporting her new coat. But hey, at least I know where to go next time when I need inexpensive but trendy and cute apparel! Nancy, the funky red-headed spinster who owns this place (and I describe her with the highest compliment) is, as other Yelpers have said, VERY nice. She was very accommodating and helped me immensely with finding a last minute birthday gift for a friend of mine. I'd say the only things I wish the Brat Store did differently are: 1) I wish they carried more earrings and necklaces - then it'd REALLY be a five-star store in my book! 2) They made their sign a little more visible. Cuz and I were lucky to come on a day where few people were out because it was raining, and there was ample parking. But I think during regular sunny days in LA it would be easy to miss this place - and believe me, this is one Brat you won't want to miss! read more

Not only is this a fabulous place, it has a GREAT ambiance (which so many stores completely neglect!). For a small store, it has a terrific amount of merchandise, both vintage and current; if she doesn't have what you're looking for, Nancy (the owner) will help you find it. And the prices? UNBELIEVABLY reasonable!! If you're shopping, you have the choice of making a huge corporation richer in an enormous florescent-lit cement box...or you can go to Brat, listen to some great music, talk to a super-friendly employee who doesn't get in your face or push merchandise on you, but merely makes suggestions based on what you've described you want. You can have a generic shopping experience, or you can have fun in a friendly atmosphere. read more

Brat is hands down Santa Monica's best kept secret! Nancy, the store owner, is a genuine bad ass punk rocker and yet the nicest, kindest, most inspiring lady you will ever meet! Have a chat with her and you'll hear some of the greatest stories from the golden age of Punk!! Getting to escape into the wonderful bratty world that is the Brat Store is truly a special treat! Always brimming with the latest and greatest in unique one of a kind Brattiness, no matter what the occasion you will be able to find a outfit with perfect accessories and a gift to boot!!! It's no wonder this fabulous boutique was recently voted Most Loved Business in Santa Monica! If I could I'd give Brat 100 stars!!! read more

They even carry PrizmEyez rainbowscopic diffraction glasses, and this is one of the very few stores where you can buy these. They turn lights into rainbows. read more

I LOVE Brat! There is always something for everyone. I find it hard to go there with the intent on "just shopping for a gift" and not treat myself as well. Although I often do indulge, the prices are so reasonable that you can and not feel guilty. It's the perfect one stop shop for great, quirky, edgy, artsy, kitschy, unique, off the wall, fun gifts, many great hand made items by local artists and awesome clothes, books and more. Not only are the store items amazing, but the store owner Nancy is the kindest, most fabulous person you'll be delighted to meet. I can't say enough about her. I have been going to Brat since I discovered it about 6 years ago and I love it more and more each time I go. My favorite store in Santa Monica hands down! read more

Hands down one of the BEST shops in Santa Monica - (not to mention the coolest or the most fun!) The store is filled with great clothes for both guys & gals! I went in with a girlfriend and ended up getting some great t-shirts and a long-sleeve button down dress shirt for my boyfriend, which he LOVED! My friend & I ended up with a stunning retro 'inspired' evening dress, a super-cute Paul Frank wallet, a wide-brimmed summer hat, leggings and some bacon shaped band-aids! This store has it all! Actually, there's so much here you tend to go into sensory overload! It has books, stationary, baby & kid stuff, toys, jewelry, etc... Owner Nancy loves her customers and makes everyone feel welcome and a part of her "Bratty" gang! She even has a email newsletter she sends out with info on new items, sales and get this - cool happenings around town! It's a little off the beaten path, i.e. not on a huge main street - but it is located across the street from the Santa Monica cemetery, which I personally feel adds to the place. (Sure makes for easy parking!) Honestly, you truly need to visit this store to experience it's charm for yourself! Hope this helps you! read more

JACKPOT!!!!!!!!!! This has got to be the coolest store in Santa Monica! I was raised on Na Na's and I was sad to see it go, but what Nancy has created is so much FUN! A true gem! There are even cool clothes for the young-ins. I always feel like I score the best stuff when I stop in and I have to say the owner has the most impeccable taste in music! It's always fun to take your time and look at everything that this amazing little store has to offer. If you're in the area, stop in! If you're not in the neighborhood drive over! You will be so happy you made the trek. I would also suggest going to the website and signing up for their weekly email that always has neat stories and cool local events/shows to check out. read more

Nancy picks the best collection of clothes for the best prices. She always has new styles, and for the artist on the budget, I can always find things I can afford!! This store is such a treasure of the westside!! Aside from clothing, she has a great collection of jewelery, books, gloves etc.. I also really love that Brat is a ticket outlet for local bands and parties! She really does all she can to support local art in every way. Go support her back!! read more

Adorable store full of unique clothing for men and women and tons of cute gifty type items. Brat is the greatest! My old roommie turned me onto this tiny outpost of fashionista fun 5 or 6 years ago and I must confess my wardrobe is full of bratty behaviour. The prices can't be beat, the selection is large and ever-changing and the combination of friendly mid-western charm mixed with angeleno artiness makes it a fun place to visit any time! No matter where I go, people comment on my clothes and accessories from Brat. It's a best-kept Westside secret. Shhhh... read more

So here's the truth. When you approach the store at first glance its a little overpacked and you think to yourself its a second hand store, upon further review you realize there's a lot of nice things in there. It does feel mainly like a clothes shop, though there are some gifts as well. Its not 5 stars for two reasons, One the decor, if we just past in front of the shop we wouldnt have gone in and there hasnt been a lot of care put into what the actual space looks like, and we sort of hesitated. Two you can't really shop for the average (even young) guy there. I honestly tried to find something to suit at least one guy, but honestly i couldnt find a thing. Oh and honestly, there was so much sock monkey stuff, is this really still popular? read more

Every time I go into this store, I always leave with a jem! This store has so many things I can spend a good amount of time in there! I remember when it was back on 3rd st and it is still an amazing store. I just recently went in there and it was just as I thought it was going to be! A magical experience! You can also pick up tickets to shows/events here. It's a all around wonderful store. read more

I love this place!!!! I love Nancy the owner and she has the best stuff! I go there every Christmas for presents for all my friends.

The Brat Store is an amazing little place tucked in to a small storefront, which faces the Santa Monica Cemetery, (not creepy at all). It is filled with wonderfully unique Items, that maybe you might not need but definitely want, and the things that you do need aren't your average run of the mill, but wonderfully unique and definitely aw some. The stores Owner Nancy really has a special touch, she even custom stamps her bags and boxes by hand. She is lovely and charming. If you haven't signed up for her weekly newsletters you should definitely do so. She posts up to date info on new items and old favorites. She writes up all kinds of info on interesting things to see and places to go in and around Los Angeles. Visit her web site and see for yourself. www.bratstore.com read more

Aside from the history (thanks, Tess et al.!), Brat is a wonderful place to spend a bit of time and some money too. I went there looking for a gift for my sister's ASU graduation (I got to hear Barack speak!), and I knew exactly what I wanted. While Brat didn't have it, the owner (I think she was the owner, anyway) CARED about my desires, and tried to hook me up, even though it meant shopping at competitors' shops. How cool is that, in this economy? I'll go back and get other things, like cute clothes at decent prices and fun kitschy stuff that's in the rear of the store. There's meter parking in front, by the way, and maybe a lot (I didn't look). read more

The clothes were awesome thank you for the nice service and for the great help. I will be back.

cool! kitschy! original! fun! there are not enough good adjectives to describe this store! oh....and one more... CHEAP! great clothes and gifts at even greater prices. If you loved the old NaNa, Soap Plant, Wacko or other such places, then this is right up your alley. The only thing I'm afraid of is that now that I've posted this, this won't be my secret shopping spot anymore.... read more

It seems like there are so few shops like this left, where you really feel the personality of the owner rather than the ambiance that the marketing department of some giant retailer has devised. The lovely Nancy stocks her shop with cute and sassy things of all varieties - men's, women's, and kids' clothes, and lots of great random gift items (this is a tried-and-true birthday gift destination for me). Rockabilly and retro types will find plenty that's right up their alley, but I'm not quite either of the above and I still always manage to come away with a reasonably-priced, compliment-getting top or dress. Westsiders, I implore you to check this place out! read more
