I did a private lesson with three friends of mine a couple months ago to celebrate my 25th birthday. Let me just say that we varied from the very fit with no rhythm to the very unfit with some rhythm. Lindsey, our instructor, managed to make the class enjoyable for all of us. She kept us moving nonstop, but picked up on when we were struggling and slowed down the move to help us work through it. If all fitness-type classes were taught by someone like Lindsey, I wouldn't be so damn unfit. She offered encouragement and assistance without making anyone (read: me, the super unfit one) feel like they were silly, weak, or out of shape. By the end of the class, the four of us were not only actually able to make it through an entire routine, but we even felt sexy doing it. read more

I have yet to take a pole class, but I went to the pole fit class tonight and could not wait to get home so I could share my experience with the entire world of Yelp. It was awesome! Everyone who attended the class was lovely and welcoming. I immediately felt right at home, which is tough to accomplish because I'm pretty shy. The instructor, Natasha, had us play a game that was not only engaging, challenging and worked up a good sweat, but was actually fun! So fun that I barely noticed how out of breath and sweaty I was until it was over. I realized quickly in this class that I'm not even close to being in 'dance shape', which is completely different than the running shape i'm currently in. I've just recently started going here and it's safe to say that I've discovered a new addiction. In addition to being fun and workie-outie-ish, these guys have the best customer service and best customer follow-up program I've ever seen. After only one class, they called asking for my feedback and offered additional class packages so that I could "cross train" during my series class. Yes, please. Thank you. Done. The attention to excellent customer service is duly notes. I started here with a Groupon and promptly signed up for a series. I love GOOD, local business (not all local businesses know the value of customer service - yeah, you know what I mean) and these gals deserve an applause -clap, clap-! This place is amazing. I'm somebody who loves being active. However, I'm not a huge fan of going to gym, and with Austin's blazing heat, it hard to do things like hiking and biking. I decided to try Brass Ovaries with a groupon. I was instantly hooked. The classes are SO FUN. The instructors are not just talented, but super funny and lovable. There are so many classes to choose from! Pole fit gets your body and core strong for the pole, the pole classes go from beginner to advanced at a really manageable pace and you see progress fast, the burlesque class is not just a workout but theatrical expression, and I can't even tell you how awesome twerk fit and BUTI yoga are...and what they do for your booty! After three weeks my body is already so much stronger and I can physically see the difference, which makes me happy, because I feel like I've just been dancing and having a blast. I honestly can't say enough good things about this place. When I leave the gym, I feel tired and rarely feel like I pushed my body to any limits or made much progress. But when I leave Brass Ovaries, I feel empowered and energized. I will definitely find a way to budget this into my lifestyle. I'm a happier person overall since I've been going, which is a mix of the fun, the physical activity, and confidence boost I get when I make progress. read more

I was in Austin for work and wanted to take an aerial class in my time off. The facility was easy to find, clean and fun. The staff was very friendly and gave a quick tour. It's a pole dancing facility that seems to be incorporating more aerial classes. I attended the Hoop 101 class on Tuesday. The class was small, 6 people and there were only 2 hoops. It was fine sharing but would have been nice to have at least a third available. The people in the class were great. Some had been several time I while for others it was their first class. Everyone was very encouraging. The instructor was nice and professional. I do think the $35/hour class is a lot. In Los Angeles I can chose from several studios who have more equipment for $20/hour class. Besides that it was a great experience. read more

If you're looking for a pole studio with cool, funny and personable instructors -- I highly recommend this place! The owner Natasha is amazing at making you feel comfortable and at ease, especially if you're new. I had no idea what to expect when I first signed up, I didn't know a thing about pole dancing or this studio. My favorite thing about this place? It's not some girly girl, frou-frou studio and the instructors are all tough bad-A's. So far I have taken Pole 101, 201, Pole Fit, and Art of Choreography. I recommend every class! Pole 101/201 really teach you the basics of gripping the pole and just becoming familiar with how your body moves and positions itself on the pole. Pole fit will really give your muscles (arms arms arms and core phew) a work out. I'm sore every time after that class and I'm fairly athletic already. Art of Choreography will really complement 101/201 (or more advanced classes) with learning how to piece all these various moves together. I have been in fully booked classes, which have ten girls total, and practically empty classes. Depends on the day and time. For the booked classes they might have two girls to one pole, but as a beginner, sharing a pole through a whole hour is plenty of time! You still get a great work-out. One class I had a pole to myself the whole time and I couldn't even lift my arms the next day. If you want free time to practice whatever you want, they have an open practice you can sign up for. I have so much fun at this place, I think I'll stick around for a while. read more

I absolutely LOVE this studio! The staff are all very welcoming and knowledgeable, and they give you so much one-on-one time so you can master every move. I really appreciate how the instructors like to get a feel for your pole abilities (brand new to pole, have been taking classes for months, etc.) prior to starting class, so they can cater their work with you to your individual abilities. I have learned so much in these classes and feel so empowered to get better and better at the moves! I would definitely recommend Brass Ovaries, no matter what skill level you have with pole dancing. Brass Ovaries is a fun, sexy, but tough, workout. The instructors are super friendly & really take the time to explain the different moves while pushing you to challenge yourself & to be graceful in your tricks. Each instructor has their 'specialty' so it's a great idea to take a bunch of class to find the instructors you enjoy working with (I, personally, think they are all great!). You will discover muscles you never knew you had and you also may get a bit bruised up so be sure to have some Arnica at home waiting for you. What used to be an amazing, empowering, bad ass studio- is no longer what it used to be. I was a student at Brass Ovaries for almost 2 years and became an advanced student in Pole. I am so sad that this place has become what it is now. It used to be a place where you would go and get training from some of the most bad ass aerialists in Austin. -Quality of instruction: is simply not there anymore. All of the instructors who made Brass Ovaries what it used to be, have all left. A lot of students have left as well. -Lack of equipment: in fact they just ran a local lift campaign to try to RAISE money for new equipment. There aren't enough poles, the poles that are still there are stripped and spin when they are suppose to be static. Previous Yelp reviews are absolutely accurate when they say "not enough poles". -$10 Cancellation Fee: they are the only studio in Austin that does this. You cancel your class with less than 24 hours notice, its $10. Level 1 classes are always packed and your spot gets taken by another student on the 'wait list' immediately if you cancel. Once you get into the higher level classes, they are rarely full. They claim that they need this 24 hr notice to allow other students to book classes. It's just another scheme they use to bring in money. -Schedule changes: the schedule is constantly 'changing' because there are not enough instructors to teach all the classes they once offered- again, all the instructors end up leaving. But they ask that you 'evolve' with them as they "offer new classes and schedules", nice cover up. -Beware: want to advance faster to level 2? Oh that's another couple hundred dollars. They offer so many "amazing" deals right now, but they don't have enough classes or instructors to accommodate these great 'deals'. They will constantly hound you to vote for them to get recognized in local contests and to write positive reviews about them. Pole dancing has a negative stigma attached to it already, it doesn't help that they now offer "boutique" items including sex toys at the studio that the public can come in and purchase. Makes it very uncomfortable to know that you are in that type of environment. I'm sure I'll get backlash from the owners and they will come up with "legit" reasons for why they are failing to offer what they said they would. Please do your research before even thinking about signing a contract with them. read more

Recently went here for a bachelorette party for a striptease/poledancing combo. It was two hours long and we had a blast! We started with an ice breaker, learned some basic pole dancing skills (got some bruises out of it), continued with a break, lesson on strip tease, and we ended up showing our recent learned skills one by one, making it awkward and fun, but hella sexy! We were asked to bring music if we wanted to, but our instructor's music was perfect! I sure enjoyed pole dancing and stripping to Nine Inch Nails. We had a blast and would recommend it for a bachelorette party, one of those things everybody secretly wants to learn how to do. The only drawback, was the price of the private party for only 5 of us. At least over $50 per person. You don't wanna bring a big party either, since the room is small and number of poles are limited. read more

Love this place!!! But man is it a work out. I've finally found something that I actually enjoy doing that is considered exercise! I don't know why I ever messed around w/ gym memberships to just have them go to waste. I hate working out. But have always loved dancing. So to stumble across this has been amazing for me. The instructors are all really great and very helpful. They never make you feel stupid even if you know you totally look crazy. Lindsey is my favorite so far. Her personality is so positive and she really makes you feel like you can do anything, and boy does she work you out. Whitney F. was totally right, I have had trouble driving, showering, brushing my hair, tying my shoes etc. So I know its working. I've traveled to Austin purposely to dance and train here due to the quality instruction and variety of apparatus. Owner, Natasha, has given me conditioning exercizes that helped me overcome movement barriers. She also provided restorative training after I had been inactive for some time. She was very empowering and reassuring and helped me change my unhelpful distorted thoughts that were working against me getting back into shape. Hoops - I have taken beginning lyra (hoop) in L.A. and NYC. I recently took Hoop 101 and Sarah was best instructor that I have encountered thus far. She had class well organized, she spotted, gave variations for various skill levels, had positive attitude, and offered movements incorporating the hoop that ramped students up to fully getting onto the hoop. This was by far the best curriculum for a beginner hoop student. Sarah makes the hoop a friendly experience (non-intimidating) that you leave feeling empowered that you can advance! Come here, whether you live here or you are just visiting Austin! read more

This place is great! My instructor Haley was very friendly and took the time to make sure everyone was doing well in the stretching class. I also loved the added mind-body relaxation stretching at the end. I also love that they have various options for dance/exercise, and I will definitely be going back! Oh, and I was greeted by two pet pigs when I walked in, how cute! I'm guessing this place is animal friendly too, at least for well-mannered animals (in the front area, not in the classes obviously), so that's a plus! My only critique is that, without a groupon, I find it to be slightly pricey, as a person on a tight budget. So when my groupon runs out, I will probably not be able to afford to go back any time soon. Great experience for getting in shape while having fun! read more

I'd like to update that I was placed in level 5 my first time here a few years ago back when the staff was good but Natasha thinks based on my knowledge, (even though they never saw me on a pole during the consultation) that I was adequate for level 2 at first then after I argued they put me in level 3 which was far too easy. They showed me things I learned 5 years ago on my own and Odette would get snappy if I did something with my own twist because it wasn't the correct way. I believe my way is the correct way because that's how my body works. Same with everyone else. There isn't a standard exact way for things on the pole. It's too bad I couldn't do more of my own stuff because I was too busy following their exact rules for everything. There was a few things I couldn't do because I didn't use a whole tube of dry hands or itac like everyone, in fact I don't use grip at all. I feel it's a cheat to use any grip or pads on your body. Odette then told me to put some on because I needed to for her class. They never issued a refund for the two class credits I bought and didn't use like they should have but I've heard this place is quite greedy with their money so didn't expect it. 1 star. read more

I've been training at Brass Ovaries for just over six months now, and it has absolutely changed my life. I usually get bored with new workouts pretty quickly, so finding something I want to stick with is always a challenge. It has not been at all challenging to stick with pole. First off, everyone here is extremely friendly and supportive. There are a lot of regulars who are here all the time (I'm one of them), but newcomers are always made to feel welcome. Yes, there are 5 poles and up to 10 students, so you may have to share a pole, but believe me, if you had that pole to yourself for a full hour, you would get tired pretty quickly. These are extremely difficult moves that take a lot of strength and flexibility to master. You can't do them over and over again for a full hour - you need breaks! The instructors are very good about making sure everyone gets adequate time and personal attention. They've been doing this a long time and are able to break the moves down into manageable parts or maybe offer that one little tweak that helps you finally nail a difficult spin or trick. I cannot believe how far I've progressed in the time I've been here - but I've still got so much more to learn, which keeps me coming back! I am definitely stronger than I've ever been in my life and much braver. In addition to the technique classes where you learn pole tricks, there's also a circuit-training style class called Pole Fit to help build your pole muscles, a stretching class to improve flexibility, a choreography class where you concentrate on musicality and building a routine and aerial hoop classes (which might possibly be my favorite of all!). With so much to choose from, you can find me in the studio several days a week, often for two hours or more at a time. If you're looking for a workout that is fun, challenging and offers opportunity for beautiful, sexy self-expression, this is the place. I'm so happy I've found my pole family, and I can't wait to see what the coming year has in store. read more

We booked and then a day later the bride twisted her ankle so we had to cancel our trip and they wouldn't refund us our 'deposit' which was more of a payment since it was 350$. It's official now- Brass Ovaries has cancelled more of the classes I've registered for than I have actually gotten to take. It's hard to get your Groupon classes in in 60 days when you have a 50/50 chance of it getting cancelled. They did offer to extend our deadline 30 days for $10 each. Even though they are the ones that keep canceling classes. Then Saturday I woke up sick and couldn't cancel the one class that did make because I had a fever and my head in the toilet all day. A fitness class was pretty freakin far from my mind at the time. So I got charged a $10 no show for me and my hubs (because he was holding my hair back.) Don't get me wrong- the instructors are awesome (Haley and Sarah are fantastic) and NARG would be a great aerials facility. But with classes for the groupon only available ONE day a week it gets a little difficult to schedule and then if something suddenly comes up, not only are you out the fee for the class but an extra $10 for inconveniencing them I guess? Maybe it's just growing pains. I love the philosophy of Brass Ovaries, but the nickel and diming and canceling classes on me constantly has really turned me off. So I'm heading back to my original trainers. read more

Equipment is excellent, instructors are top-notch and scheduling staff is friendly, but these classes are WAY too expensive and difficult to schedule to not be guaranteed your own pole in class. Several times I have arrived intentionally early to claim a spot so I wouldn't have to share and then one more student comes in at the last second, asking if she can share with me. Why do they always ask ME? Lol. It's a real bummer to go through all the scheduling and showing up early just to spend half the class wiping down the pole and watching somebody else eat away all your "hands-on" practice time. It effectively takes away half of the value of the class, because you're only getting half the pole time and we all know "practice makes perfect!" Also too expensive if it is not your primary exercise method. i run and go to another gym for overall fitness, but was looking for a Sunday "rest day" activity. The memberships and class passes are really not a good deal if you're only going once a week; you have to be going multiple times per week to make it worth it. My class passes kept expiring before I could use them and ended up having to pay MORE every time to renew them. I love the instructors and this place is really fun, but I won't be back. Too expensive, unless you're guaranteed your own spot. I'll keep my other gym membership and keep running to stay in shape and will just learn how to pole from YouTube, now that I have my own pole at home. read more

I love this place! I bought a groupon to Brass Ovaries because I was wanting to take classes here and had been looking at the place for a while. I was so excited for them to be up on groupon. So far I have done two Pole 101 classes and one Aerial Hoop class. I fancied myself a tad stronger than I actually was in that first and second pole class, and a little more graceful. But I had so much fun in the class. The second class we strung together some moves into a routine and had a ton of fun with it. I feel a lot more confident with the moves and spins and "lifts" - not sure what to call them but I'm quite pleased with myself for those. My instructor for the pole classes was Natasha and she was fabulous. She is so sweet and is always smiling. She makes it easy to have a great time. The aerial hoop class was AMAZING! I was doing tricks the very first class. My shoulders are incredibly sore today (terrible idea to have done yoga this morning after last nights hoop class). I had the best time - I've never felt so strong and graceful in my whole life! It does take a lot of strength but I was able to do everything she showed me. I'm saving up to get my own hoop! It was awesome! My instructor for the hoop class was Sophie. She was so sweet and encouraging and helpful! I can't wait to do more classes. I highly recommend this place to anyone - in every class I've had women of every size, shape and age and it was a blast! Definitely try this place out, it's fantastic! read more

I used to jog and go to the gym for exercise, but everytime I got "too busy" the first thing I cut out was the exercise. Then I saw a groupon for Brass Ovaries, thought it looked interesting, and tried it out. That was 6 months ago. I now have a 1 year membership and just got my own pole for my apartment. I don't do it for the sexy side; in fact, I'm kind of clumsy. I do it for the workout, variety, and awesome people. The two things most people complain about are the sharing a pole and the parking. Here's what you need to know, though. If you come regularly, you will learn about our awesome instructors and that they do everything needed to make sure you get enough pole time to walk away learning something new and with a great workout. They also take into account comment card notes and change the schedule frequently to add classes/adjust times to accommodate concerns/growing needs of the members. As far as the parking goes, there is always enough parking. If you have to park in the row not designated with lines by the carwash you won't have any issues (I have mosty parked there and had NO issues of any kind) and the only company that can tow you is Brass Ovaries and of course they won't. In 6 months I have never had to park further than 40 feet away from the front door of the studio, and there's a lot of people around and it's well lit at night. The best part of this is the people. I have made a completely new set of friends, guys and girls of all ages, and the instructors have the most fantastic personalities. They are friendly and encouraging and very interested on making you feel comfortable and successful. I am a teacher and in grad. school and I still get to class at least 3 times a week because I love being there. If you've never tried anything but the gym or some classes at the gym, I really encourage you to try out a month punch card and really try out different types of classes (Pole Fit is awesome hard and I promise you will get fit FAST!-it's not on the pole; it's circuit training for core/arms/etc.). Then if you like it, do a year membership. That way it is affordable and you will have the time to really enjoy yourself, make friends, and get great results. read more

In addition to a few moves, I learned that I am not very graceful or sexy on the pole, but you would have never known it based on Brynn's exclamations of ,"Good job! You're doing great!" Love this place and the friendly staff. Planning to go back as soon as my budget allows. Haley's stretchy splits and ballet tone classes rock and I like when they just have open pole practice sessions, which aren't available on a regular schedule. I wish it were a little more affordable (the only reason I'm giving 4 instead of 5 stars) Because of their level system, I sorta opted to focus on their non-pole classes and open pole practice sessions. I saw that one of their main instructors, Sophie, was leaving, which is too bad, cause her stretching classes were great. I get a really sore lower back and shoulders from figure skating, dancing etc....so the stretching classes at BO help both with flexibility and unwinding the tightness from my other physical activities. Poles make a great prop to stretch with, especially if you need work on back flexibility and a great shoulder stretch. Ballet tone had my calves in a world of pain and it's a great class for my posture, balance etc....which helps for my figure skating. I wish open pole practice was more available, cause it's the most affordable and flexible class. Their schedule is a bit unpredictable and changes a lot week to week. I've definitely lost money to cancellations, but oh well. I can see the other side of that. Shakia is really cool for open pole practice and will help you figure out whatever pole moves you're working on; I liked attending those so the level system wasn't limiting me as I got back into pole shape. I have experience with it, so I didn't want to test my level before doing some practice, so I could test at my actual level, not out of shape level! I did do a few pole level one classes, even though I can definitely do more advanced stuff, and level one routines actually hit on stuff I'd never really done. They seem to make an effort to keep stuff fresh. I'm hoping to go back to expand my repertoire a bit. I kinda have the same old go-to pole moves and have to mix it up. read more
