Second shop's estimate: replace a big section for $600 (1 hour labor) or put on a band-aid for $220 (2 hours labor). Then I go to Tri-State Muffler: Your band-aid will cost $145, and we can have it ready in about a half-hour if you want. They also have decorative chrome end pipes and do custom work. (Neatly drawn poster for car show tacked up on the counter.) But if you just need to keep the car going for now, these guys do welding all day and can knock it out quickly. Definitely if/when I do replace that big section, I'm coming back here first.
