We have normally been happy with taking any of our cars here. But, the last 2 x we felt like things werent as good as they had been. One time, supposedly checked brakes/fluid etc. only to find out there was no fluid when I stopped in to have it checked when I was in Mesa because it felt like brakes were bad - no fluid. Then, the time before that, work was okay, but things were left not quite done (husband had to put cap back on -/was just sitting in engine area) Not unhappy, just not as happy. Bruce is the manager. I have trusted him for 20 years with our cars. In late May on Tuesday (they were closed Monday Memorial Day) I went there with an urgent request. Our daughter and I had just driven her car from Sacramento to here on Saturday. There was a strange scraping noise at 75 mph. She and her mom were just heading to Santa Fe, NM and could someone check out this scaping noise. Bruce was not there but Chris was. He came to our aid and put the car up on a lift. Something in the wheel well had broken loose and was rubbing against the front tire. He did a temporary repair so they could get on the road and drive to Santa Fe. I have been going to this BrakeMax for well over a decade. My daughter (16 yrs old) dropped VW off to get looked at. Turns out, the valve cover was warped and needed replacement. They wanted to charge us: $706 for the job: $397 for valve cover; $39 for gasket to go with; and the rest labor. When I showed up to inquire about the details, Chris was short with us. ("Mama, he wasn't very nice," she says to me, on the way home). We did a quick keyword search on Google and figured out the cover comes with a gasket as part of the standard assembly and costs $208.19 for everything at the VW dealership. My nephew is going to install it this weekend with basic tools. Should take less than an hour. So, parents with teenagers, don't trust these guys with your children. On top of this eye-popping margin, they charged us $99 for a "diagnostic fee" on the way out. Looking for a new mechanic in the neighborhood. read more

It's a great price using their coupons, which I get in the mail or over the internet and every 5th one is free. The service is always great, they include a thorough check up, including brakes, tires, coolant, etc. Only thing to be aware, they alert you on things that are wearing and want to fix it sometimes before it's necessary. read more

After unfortunately running over a large metal grate (which must have fallen off a truck on I-10 north of Cortaro) we were upset as we saw extensive left side body damage. Someone near the exit we pulled off at referred us to BRAKEmax on Jenna Nicole Ln. James at BRAKEmax was fantastic. He and his team put our car on the lift, examined it from front to back then called us in to go over it. He showed us where the grate had traveled and told us it was very near the fuel line. No mechanical damage and we are safe to drive back home. He fixed some of the minor body damage as well. No charge and he put our minds at ease. If I lived in Tucson this honest and friendly shop would be my first choice for auto repair (they are a AAA Approved Auto Repair shop as well). read more

So I had my blinker go out, and I called up this location at about 8:00 AM I described what happened, and they said they could see my car at 9:00AM I was stoked! Well, I wound up being 20 minutes late. I called at 9 and asked if they would want me to reschedule and they said "No, no, come on in whenever you can make it". Since I was late, I wasn't expecting the red carpet. But when a full hour passed by and my car STILL hadn't been looked at, I was irritable. This would have been incovenient enough if I DIDN'T have my 2 year old with me, but alas, he was there, and I spent more than 60 minutes chasing him around the lobby trying to keep him from completely destroying. After 75 minutes of waiting, my car still hadn't been seen, and I asked for my keys back. At this time, they felt it necessary to offer me a shuttle (with no car seat, so a nice gesture if not totally convenient). They then also said it would be only 5 more minutes for my car to be seen. But I was upset enough I just wanted to leave. I drove down the rode to Midas, on Oracle near Flowing Wells, where I was not only seen immediately, with out calling ahead, but my blinker bulb was replaced, free of charge, in under 5 minutes. Seriously. I find it hard to believe that the mechanics at Brakemax couldn't have done that AND charged me. I would have gladly paid. read more

I took "Sally" in because the car was having difficulty starting. To be honest, this was the third place I took it. I started off at Walmart in the automotive department and then set off to Autozone. I was told conflicting information about what the problem could be before I went to BrakeMax. At BrakeMax I was promptly helped and the gentleman behind the counter was helpful. Poor quality. Purchased new front brakes (rotors and pads)...10k miles later was feeling shimmering in the steering wheel. When I took it back in they said my new front brakes needed turned again. When I confronted them about how little time they had lasted they gave ma lame excuse as to a common manufacturers defect. They also said that it must be my driving style. When I told them they had quoted me the brakes should last 30-40k miles they came up with more excuses. I will not return to them. read more

Two issues: one I had a coupon from the local paper and showed it at the beginning but they waited until AFTER they were done changing my oil to tell me my vehicle took a type of oil that wasn't covered and it would be extra. Plus, they quoted me 45 minutes but it took 1.5 hours. Second I left and 45 minutes later had a flat tire. They had rotated them. I took it back and they claimed it was just a coincidence the tire had a crack and they wouldn't help. NEVER again going here. read more

Very professionally run shop, courteous staff and no hard selling. They mistakenly installed the wrong brand struts on my truck and the next day took it in immediately, shuttled me home and then two hours later picked me up and brought me back. I was visiting Tucson from Texas over Thanksgiving and my car wouldn't start on Friday. I called AAA and they towed me to Brakemax. They found that packrats had eaten part of my wiring. The mechanic (sorry I can't remember his name) called around to find just the pigtail that he said needed replacing, but his suppliers were only willing to supply the entire wiring harness. That would have been almost $1,300, but the worse news was that he couldn't get delivery until the following Tuesday! Luckily, while I was phoning my wife to talk over our options; one of the suppliers he hadn't been able to talk with had phoned him back. They were able to supply the pigtail and get it there quickly. While we waited for the part, I had a needed oil change done (which came with a free tire rotation). They had found that my front brakes needed replacing (only 2mm left), but didn't try to pressure me to get the work done there. They told me that the brakes would get me home. We had a tiring drive home, but got here only a couple of hours late. The guys at Brakemax saved the day for us. I've never been so happy to be a few hours late and $400 light as I was that day! The service was good enough that I checked to see if there was a Brakemax in Austin to get the front brakes replaced. There isn't; and the quote I have from my regular place is almost 50% higher than Brakemax's quote. read more

Used to have good service here. The last two times I have been there work was very sloppy. Car put back together without several screws and nuts. Things are loose and clunking around. Recently had AC blower replaced, again loose panels and this time transmission codes being thrown and check engine light immediately following their work. The dealership mechanics troubleshot the car for week only to find, you guessed it, loose wire connectors behind dash near the AC blower. Done with their shoddy work! read more

I came into this shop after the check engine light came on in my vehicle as I was driving back to Tucson from Flagstaff. I then went to AutoZone and had the codes read so I would have an idea of what was causing the CEL to illuminate - it turned out to be a cylinder 3/4 misfire. I then called this BrakeMax location to see about solving the problem and that turned out to be a big mistake. I made it very clear from the start that I wanted to do the work necessary to get the CEL off, but it's an older car and I didn't want to pour money into it unnecessarily. After their initial "diagnostic" for $90, the shop manager told me the spark plugs needed to be replaced but would not get the check engine light off. He then said it would be another $470 or so for further diagnosing what is causing the CEL to illuminate. Initially, I agreed because I really wanted the CEL to turn off. The engine had been running well, so I didn't think it would be a major problem to repair. After about 15 minutes, I decided against this extra work/diagnostic (as it was really starting to add up) and wanted to get a second opinion. I then promptly told the manager I did not want the mechanic to proceed (at which point they still charged me about $230, had supposedly not found the source, and the CEL was still be on). After finishing with the car, the manager quoted me a little over $2000 in repairs to get the CEL off and also stated that his mechanic couldn't finish the estimate (because I told them to stop) and it would likely cost even more than that. The mechanic even came out to me as I was walking to the car and told me there was too much wrong with the engine and I would likely be better off replacing it (as is also noted in their estimate). I was distraught. However, I took it to get a second opinion, and the second mechanic said the cylinder misfire would be solved by replacing the spark plugs and wires. I then gave him the estimate from BrakeMax. He laughed out loud after reading their estimate and suggested they were putting a lot of unnecessary work on the estimate to try to take advantage. I then took the car for a third opinion and without telling that mechanic anything about my experience at BrakeMax or the second mechanic, they came to the conclusion that the car just needs new spark plugs and wires. I then proceeded to get the spark plugs and wires replaced (not at BrakeMax, obviously), and lo and behold, that did the trick! The car has been running well since getting that done and I couldn't be more happy that I didn't end up getting all that extra work done at BrakeMax. Very unscrupulous shop manager and mechanic. They will rack up unnecessary work and try to take advantage of you to the tune of thousands of your hard earned money. In addition, I really rely on this vehicle and to have someone tell me it needed a new engine or thousands in unnecessary work was very distressing. I wouldn't recommend this location or BrakeMax in general under any circumstances. read more
