I found Brake Check online while looking for a place that services tires. One of the tires on my car was leaking air, and I suspected that I had a nail or something similar stuck in it. I called Brake Check prior to going to make sure that they were open, available, and offered patching services. They said yes, and also mentioned that they patch tires FOR FREE. I quickly headed over. There are tons of parking spots in the lot in front. I entered the office and signed in, and I was out within 45 minutes. They quickly found the nail in my tire and patched it up for free. I will certainly be back for all my tire needs!! read more

I scheduled an alignment here a few days in advance. I get there and explain the issue. I get quote for $2500 saying I need all of these things replaced but they couldn't do an alignment because the machine broke the previous day. Why would you let me come in, drop my car off, and pay for Ubers when the service I requested was unavailable and you knew that prior to my appointment. I went to another location and here I am $70 later with my issue fixed. Absolutely terrible service. I'd encourage everyone to get a second opinion rather than trusting their advice as they clearly tried to take advantage of me. read more

My son went in for a squeak check and they charged him $500 for a brake job without even replacing rotors then put his car into limp mode so he couldn't drive it , he waited there all day (8 hours) while they couldn't figure what was wrong. Location: N Austin TX. Where do I start? I went online to check what services they do, so, I needed an oil change, and front brakes. So, looking online, estimated about $199 or so. I drop off the truck, and immediately, they guy tells me, the online estimate will most likely change. I will call you. In my mind, I'm thinking, max $300. I get a call an hour later, The tech keeps telling me that rotors are needed, and that it's safer to replace than to resurface them, and that in order for the truck to run at its optimum, I need to replace them. He finally gets to the price...... He says, $692 will get you out the door and your can will run great. I said, EXCUSE ME!?!? He responded so casually, $692. I felt robbed and like he had be by the balls. He had my truck in his shop and I needed to drive safely. I thought, I'm not going to play his game, I said, sorry, I don't have that kind of money. He said well, we can take off the brake flush, so it goes down to $625. I said, NO, I just don't have it. I said, just replace the break pads, as I originally requested. They did, and charged me, $189. The truck is running normally, no issues. When I got the break down of their charges, I figured out why it was so expensive. They are thieves !!!!! They wanted to charge me $191 per rotor replacement, plus labor. The set of rotors online or at your local store are $187 for the set of two. NEVER again!!! These places abuse their customers and do not care at all to build a customer relationship. I will make sure, non of my friends and relatives fall for these thieves and their profiting lies. read more

I was a 5+ year loyal customer for oil changes on two vehicles. I usually do brakes and rotors myself, but I finally decided to give them a shot. I scheduled an appointment for new pads, rear drum adjust, and an alignment in Jan 23. In Oct 24 I started noticing a pulsing when I came to complete stops and it gradually got worse over a month. I came to the conclusion they probably screwed something up and decided to just fix myself. I bought a set of new rotors and pads from O'reilly and proceeded. The driver side was ok but when I got to the passenger side I discovered the upper caliper bracket bolt was missing and the lower one was hand loose. The pads were damaged and rotor was warped. This was obviously the issue and could have ended up being a serious accident. Whether they forgot to put the bolt back in or it came loose in time and fell out, they were the last ones to touch it and I believe at a minimum they didn't torque them down all the way or use lock tight. I spent around $300 to fix everything myself. The original receipt for work was around $245. I called the shop where the work was done and explained everything and the first shop manager argued with me and hung up. Then I called back and supposedly the VP answered and I went through the same conversation with him. He refused to take any accountability arguing on his merit of being a 31 year master mechanic and said that the bolts would have fallen out a long time ago if they had done anything wrong. He kept sighting the warranty on the pads only being 90 days or 4k miles. I doubt they would have even honored that. All I was requesting was a refund for the brakes and instead got a stubborn attitude from a guy who on behalf of his company was refusing to stand by their workmanship. In my opinion, the VP of a franchise like this should not also be the mechanic arguing with customers. Normally, successful, healthy, businesses have enough common sense to at least offer some form of concession to make things right. He was talking out of both sides of his mouth when he said "he always hates to lose a customer" because he was 100% fine with not doing a thing and wishing me a nice day. I called another shop that I have work done by and asked their opinion and they said in that situation they would have at least done something like a free oil change and investigated it further. So anyway... this company is BAD NEWS. read more

I went in to get an oil change because I had a coupon. They were super friendly and said it would take about an hour since they were busy. They said I needed to get my air filter replaced so I went ahead and did it since I had a discount. They came back out again and said that I need to get a tire alignment because I'm in the red zones and my tires will be ruined. I didn't have time to do it then so I told them I'd get it done another time. As I drove away my check oil light was still on since they forgot to reset it. Luckily, I know how to do that on my vehicle but that just kind of stuck out to me as a red flag. They also just put a date on my sticker for when my next oil change is due, not mileage. My oil changes are usually every 10 months for the type of car I have. They put mine for 4 months. No wonder every 4th oil change is free there. I took my car to a closer tire place to where I live and they told me that there is nothing wrong with my alignment. They said they probably just didn't hook up my car correctly at Brake Check when they checked it. That can cause a faulty read. Definitely take your car to a different place for a second opinion if they recommend additional service. At least the other place gave me a free tire rotation and didn't charge me anything for checking my alignment. read more

I like the Brake Check, because even though I am a girl and I have only the bare minimum of knowledge regarding the workings of the internal combustion engine, these folks treat me with respect. They give you a recommendation which you can either take or not. They won't treat you like an idiot if you decide not to take their recommendation - which is nice. I took my car to Brake Check for an estimate on replacing the brake pads on my car. I have to hand it to these guys, they are friendly. This is why I'm giving them 4 stars instead of 3. I'll definitely take my cars there for oil changes in the future, but I'm not so sure about brake work. The estimate we received for new brake pads was extremely high, and I'm not so sure I trust their estimate. We were quoted over 350 bucks for the pads alone! They also recommended turning the rotors because massive amounts of corrosion had built up on them. In the end, we decided to replace the pads ourselves. $20 bucks later and we have brand new brake pads. When we got the tires and calipers off there was no corrosion on the rotors AT ALL! The favorite part of my Brake Check experience though was when I picked up the car after receiving my $450-$500 quote. I told them we were going to try to replace the pads ourselves, but might bring it back if we ran into any problems. In the true friendly manner I had become accustomed to the guy leaned over and said "Well, if it makes you feel any better, it's really not that hard at all!" read more

This company absolutely took advantage of me, stole parts from my car, and then nearly got me killed when the faulty cheap ignition coils they put in broke down. 6 years I've come to them for service and they screw me over like this, ridiculous. Took my BRAND NEW honda accord in for 5,000 mile maintenance. A light came on saying I should take it into the dealer. I figured I just needed an oil change and some other minor service(I know nothing about cars) so I took it to them instead. I said I needed 5,000 mile maintenance for my new car. They then asked if I wanted to replace the spark plugs and ignition coils while I was there and told me that is also part of a tune up. I said sure, you know more than me. They didn't mention that those parts only need to be replaced after 120,000 MILES. More money for them. This cost me over 500$. Then 1,000 miles later the coils they put in my car break down. I nearly get into an accident as my car decelerates from 80 to 10 miles an hour on a freeway. I take my car into the dealer this time since I'm supposed to be under warranty. The dealer says my ignition coils fell apart and were horrified by the cheap after market parts put into my car. Because they weren't honda parts my warranty was voided. THE REPAIR SHOP DIDNT TELL ME WHAT THEY WERE DOING VOIDED MY WARRANTY. Now honda parts are on national back order, I have to wait a month for parts, and I have to pay 1,200$ out of pocket to replace the cheap 500$ coils these guys scammed me to replace my quality honda parts with. Upon calling them they said I needed to bring the car in and they will replace the coils WITH THE SAME ONES. First off the car isn't driveable so I can't do that, secondly I'm not putting the same parts that fell apart back in my car. After arguing they conceded they could get honda parts but only if it brought it back in, which I CAN'T DO. Then they called the dealership crooks and blamed them when they scammed me and voided my warranty in the first place. They scammed me, stole my expensive parts, and threw me under the bus. This is nothing short of theft and I'll be filing a police report. read more

The first time I went in there I told him I needed a oil change he said it was on sale for $50 and I waited an hour for him to tell me he couldn't get my drain plug out so I waited more and he finally ripped it out and broke it so he told me he was going to replace it and I was going to have to pay seven dollars for it so I did and it I came to San Antonio for family and it leaked all in the driveway drove back to Austin and it was still leaking went to AutoZone and bought $35 oil and the guy there put 2 quarts in it and I drove it to SA and it died out. So now I'm stuck in San Antonio not able to drive my car because it won't start and there's no oil in it and it keeps leaking even when we put oil in it. read more

The saga of my tale begins October 2013. I go in because my front right rotor was busted and I needed a quick fix. First visit grievances: - They tried to charge me an inordinate amount of money for new rotors and new brake pads. (Costing in the ballpark of ~$300 per new front rotor and $100 per new brake pad) I called Autozone and asked for a pair of front wheel rotors and they were about $75.00 a piece. I told the dude trying to sell me the work at the front desk of Brake Check and he said, "FINE. I'll charge you that but they'll be awful rotors." I said okay, do it. Walked out of there spending a fraction of what they were going to charge me. A few months after the first visit to Brake Check I took my car in to get the brakes checked out at the dealership because they were vibrating like crazy again. I told them I got new ones put on in October and should have a warranty. What I'm about to say next is NOT something that I can verify, but I don't think that they actually replaced the rotors during my visit in October. I think they resurfaced them and sent me on my way thinking I got new rotors. So I went back to Brake Check immediately after the dealership and asked for new rotors since they were under warranty. It was about 10am by the time I got to Brake Check after the dealership. (I haven't written this review until now because I've been afraid to: Please read on.) I went to the front desk and told them to check my rotors without telling them about the warranty. They say okay, wait here. An hour passes. They get the wheels off and tell me that I need new rotors. I told them that was strange because I had them replaced by this very institution back in October. They told me that there was no way that could have been the case because they were so worn. I asked for new rotors at no cost and they refused because they didn't offer warranties with the kind of rotors they used. I said, okay resurface them and I'll go buy new ones and put them on myself. They say okay and I wait in the lobby for an hour. They finally called me in to the garage to show me something that they saw behind the front right wheel. I look and it looks like a dab of grease was smeared on the axle. They tell me that they had to replace the entire axle. I called the dealership I went to just an hour prior to my visit to Brake Check and they told me that they didn't see any grease at all. (And believe me, if the dealership said that there was nothing to charge me for, then they're telling the truth.) I went back in and asked Brake Check about the grease. (It seriously looked like someone had sprayed WD40 on my axle.) They continue on saying there's a leak. I tell them I don't want to worry about it since the dealership I just came from didn't find anything when I went in. Another hour passes. So I'm sitting in the lobby, now for 2 hours, to get my rotors RESURFACED. All of a sudden something hits the window separating the lobby, where I'm sitting, and the garage. My ears were ringing from the force of impact. When I regain my hearing, all I can hear is "YOU F***ING *** ... " etc etc more f-words etc and realize the a mechanic had thrown something metal at the manager on duty. The entire garage was completely on edge and I can't even begin to tell you how uncomfortable I was. The manager ends up threatening to fight the mechanic, gets in his face and has a cussing fight with him -- all while I'm sitting in the lobby trying to read GoT. Guys, this isn't even the worst part. The manager then comes into the lobby behind the desk and talks to me for ANOTHER HOUR justifying his actions and proceeds to tell me his entire life's story. His monologue was one of the most uncomfortable things I've had to sit through and it seriously didn't end for an entire hour. At this point it's around 2pm and I still haven't had my vehicle put back together. The manager reassures me multiple times that it'll be done soon. TL;DR: I entered that God-forsaken building at 10am, experienced awful service, almost had one of my ears damaged, had one of the most uncomfortable conversations in my life about domestic violence, alcoholism and politics, and was allowed to leave around 2:50pm. All to get my rotors resurfaced. Avoid this place like you would the most awful thing you can think of. For me it's "Avoid this place like you would a Brake Check," but it might be different for you. Pretty much an overall awful place in general. First, they charge too much for their brakes. Whatevs. My beef is with the fact that they charge for services they don't complete, and when you call them on those unfinished services, they don't know how to complete them correctly and end up costing you more money to have said services done the right way I discovered they hadn't filled my antifreeze (which they promise to do). They told me to come back, so I did. They subsequently filled my antifreeze. BUT, with the wrong stuff. With antifreeze that is very bad for my car. A couple months later, this misstep on their part cost me muy dollars and time with my mechanic. They decided to be wholly unaccountable, from general manager to district manager, but still claim to be a prideful local company. Although my car repairs were costly, all I really wanted from them was a payment of an antifreeze flush, since obviously I could not actually prove my other car repairs were blamed solely on the fact that they didn't know what they were doing with the antifreeze. Really though, I drive a reliable Toyota, and I believe all of my car troubles derived from their mistake and believe I was reasonable by simply suggesting they reimburse me for an antifreeze flush, when they admitted to me they were in the wrong for filling my car with the wrong fluid. The GM told me someone would be getting back to me about the situation. That was four months ago. I followed up with them three months ago and still no word. I told them I'd be yelping bad news about them, and here I am. That girl, they decided not to help (my request was that they pay for a $90 antifreeze flush that my mechanic had to complete to get my car running under good order). I own this book that I got in a dollar bin called The Life and Crimes of Don King. I'll let you decide on how good the book was judging by the price, but even if it wasn't Faulkner it was entertaining. What the hell does this book have to do with this review, you ask? Well, in one little vignette in the book, the author details how Don King in an interview postulated that his favorite curse word was created by black people. Well, I don't know the etymology of this word, but I share Don King's fondness for it. The word is motherfucker, and it applies to how I feel about the brake job I received from Brake Check. Here is the only positive thing I can say, they did give me a lower price than the five other estimates I had received on a back end brake job. But, as the saying goes, you get what you pay for. Another saying is, if it isn't broke, don't fix it. My brakes had been "soft" for several weeks leading up to the repair, and it had been recommended by Jiffy Lube that I have them looked at by a brake specialist. But, one thing they weren't doing was squeaking, which is what they do now after being allegedly "fixed" by Brake Check. At first, I gave them the benefit of the doubt, I thought the brakes would stop making noise after they had been "worn in". Nope, that did not occur. My boyfriend took the car back after 3 weeks of squeaking, and the mechanic gave him some bullshit answer that they needed to be "baked in" and that we should suddenly slam on the brakes several times while driving and the squeal would go away. We tried that fairytale of an answer, and surprise, surprise, they still squeal. I haven't taken the car back, yet, because I haven't found a day where I can squeeze in time for a full on meltdown. Plus, while my car was on the rack for the first time, I mentioned to the MOD ( I believe his name was Dennis) that I found it interesting that they were open on Sundays. He then proceeds to tell me that they have to be open on Sundays because apparenty, at a time when they had Sundays off, one of their employees thought it would be brillant to slip in there and do a brake job on the QT for some friends. He didn't do his job too well, however, and the recipients of the brake job were killed when their brakes failed at a later date in time. I am so hoping that the dude has his facts wrong about that story, but I also was mind-boggled that he was telling a customer the story in the first place. So, understandably, I am a little leery about returning to get my squeal stopped, and that my friends, is why they are worthy of the MF. read more
