If you have a bourbon fan at home, Brain Brew Custom Whiskey's Custom Distillery Experience should be on your radar. Brain Brew, located in a fabulous airy building on a lake in a quiet corner of Newtown, offers in person and virtual experiences that cover the golden age of whiskey, the craft age of whiskey and a master bourbon blending session. Our experience took place in person and our knowledgeable guide, a certified bourbon professional, told us the history of bourbon in the region. Who knew Cincinnati was home to 600,000 when Chicago only had 6000 residents and Louisville 600? Not I. We got a quick lesson in how to taste bourbon before sipping at three great oak bourbons from the golden age - 200 year old oak, European oak and American oak. Our tray came with small ladles so we could add water if we wished and taste the difference it made as it pushed the natural oils in the bourbon to the top of the shot glass. We took notes rating the taste, aftertaste and anything else that struck us about each bourbon. Next, we entered the craft age and those sips included cherry wood, maple wood and smoked oak bourbons. After that, we learned how to blend the different bourbons to come up with our own custom recipe. Brain Brew bottles these to take home, if you wish. While you wait for your custom bottle, you can enjoy a small flight of Brain Brew's three award winning bourbons, Dexter, Paddle Wheel and Deckhand, or three tasters of 1800s inspired craft cocktails, the Dickens Sour, Whiskey Daisy and Kon-Tiki. Brain Brew encourages participants to bring food and the event runs about three hours. Despite all the bourbon, food and time worked their magic and I can attest that I was nowhere near inebriated. Prices are super reasonable, too, with the experience priced at $35 and your own custom bottle at $45. Recommended!!

What a super cool concept and something different for this area! Perfect date day location. We had a blast making our own concoction and can't wait to come back. If their prices were just a skoosh cheaper we'd be here all the time, lol. The back yard around the water is beautiful. Welcome to the area, Brain Brew! You def. have a returning customer here!

Been eyeing Pensive for a couple years and finally made it out this week with my Wife. We're eager…read moreto find a top-tier burger place in the area, though unfortunately this fell a little short of our expectations. Decided to split the Silver Charm for an appetizer, and it came about ten minutes later. The onion rings were decent, good flavor and somewhat crispy. The accompanying sauces of barbecue and ranch were both good as well, though both were missing something to elevate them a bit more I think. The flavor was good, but quite a small portion for $10. My wife ordered the Strike the Gold Burger and I went for the Northern Dancer Crispy Chicken. The sandwiches came out about ten minutes after we finished the Silver Charm, which was perfect timing. She liked her burger pretty well, and I took a bite too. The "caramelized onions" were definitely more sauteed, with still a bit of crunch, and otherwise I could really only taste the barbecue sauce, which was tasty, but I would have liked some more varied flavors. My chicken sandwich was... a bit disappointing. Rather than a chicken piece that appropriately fit the bun, it was more of a chicken strip, with bites that would only yield bun. In addition, because the chicken piece was so small, it was also extremely dry, which is a bummer because I actually thought the breading was very tasty. The chipotle aioli was decent, but didn't pack as much spice or flavor as I was hoping. And with only two toppings and a sauce on the whole sandwich, I was disappointed that the tomato was rather mushy and didn't seem fresh. I will say the fries that came with our sandwiches were crisp and well seasoned, and somewhat unfortunately the best part of my meal. Based on our experience, I didn't hate our dinner here and if someone invited me to meet them here, I wouldn't say no, but I'm also not going out of my way to revisit.

Fun place to eat and a good vibe. Nice crowd for a Saturday afternoon in January…read more Our waitstaff was friendly and knowledgeable about the distilled products and also about the area. Food was pretty good, but the meat on my burger was small. I subbed out a salad for the fries, and the salad was unremarkable for the $5 substitution charge. But it was still a fun way to pass the time and the distilling and horse memorabilia is fun to look at. 4/26
