Looking for some good firewood to baptize that $400 Santa Maria Bbq you just bought from Costco? Don't laugh. Our purpose for getting wood today was because, in a moment of weakness, my adult daughter decided to buy a bbq just like her father's (but slightly smaller). So the wood, and some great slabs of meat, are what we are providing for Mother's Day. We all win. Perfect! First and foremost, always call first to arrange your pick up. Brad has a real job too, so he might be out and about. This address is his private home with a large side lot filled with downed trees and split wood. Brad brings his white oak down from the Paso Robles area, not all that far from the famous bbq city of Santa Maria in Central California. The oak, a very hard wood, is already split into useable logs, already dried, and makes for the most magnificent tasting bbq. It is difficult to find and is therefore more expensive than other woods used for bbq. So plan to use less. And how do you do that? Currently, what he sells is half oak, half ash (the tree) by the barrel. The ash is perfect for starter wood, to which you add a log of oak on top. This way you will get more bang for your buck without compromising the flavor you hope to achieve. His prices are very reasonable and includes him helping load up the back of your truck. We forgot to bring a liner for our trunk, and he kindly provided some plastic sheeting to lay down first. Thank you Brad! Going to Brad's is not your routine jaunt to pick up some wood for your bbq or fireplace. It can be a day adventure, it you let it. As you listen to "Mabel" dictate the directions from Google Maps, slow down and do some neck twisting and pointing while you enjoy the surrounding rural neighborhoods. You might even see real cow folks, with genuine leather boots and wide brimmed hats, riding downtown on horseback, because this *is* horse country! And don't plan on washing your car *before* you come. Use Yelp to check out downtown Norco, 6th Street, to find some good cowboy grub afterwards. Don't be shocked to see corrals right next to the restaurants. They are well used. Think about bringing the kiddos along, too. They will get a kick out of seeing the animals in the surrounding area. They can walk up to the fence for a face to face meeting with Brad's neighbor's cow (she's quite curious and friendly), and see their two ponies, a goat, at least one very noisy rooster, and a variety of goofy, free-range chickens running scatterbrained around and under the cow, while you are loading the wood into your trunk. I saw (over the weekend) on another site that it said Brads was closed, I have always purchased, picked up my firewood over the weekend as it just works best for my schedule and sure enough he was open. And btw they always load it, during Covid I didn't even get out of my vehicle. That site also had zero reviews & I know he has great reviews so even tho I've been getting my wood from there for several years I'm sorry I never left a review. Man! Brad is the best. Called today (Saturday) and Brad answered. I asked him what he would recommend for a smoker and he went into such detail with each wood and even offered to wait while I did my own research on each wood type he was describing. He was so incredibly thorough, respectful, didn't rush me through our conversation at all. Which is nice because sometimes I have 1,000 questions. I got a wheelbarrow of hard wood for my smoker and when I arrived Brad was so nice. I talked to him while he picked the wood and loaded my truck and the conversation was pleasant and lighthearted. Best customer service ever! I reached out to brad explaining a project I wanted to do in my home, with a few pictures. He responded quickly letting me know he could do it. Within a day he had my wood cut and ready to go. He then helped load up my car. He charged a very good price.
