AMAZING! Seriously the best bakery I've ever been to. The breads are to die for! And so reasonably priced. We tried the cheesy flatbread (I think it was called a Striata?) the Olive bread and the Herb flatbread. All three were fantastic! Low grade dog food! That's how I'd describe the quality of the chocolate chip cookies and chocolate croissant I tried today . The irony is hysterical because they were also selling homemade dog biscuits . Seriously though what the heck is the deal with bakeries around here? I lived in Europe for 7 years and have been in many bakeries ... Bracken Mountain Bakery can compete with many of them. The goodies are amazing ... croissants are flaky, muffins are filled with fruit, hot cross buns (they have now) are flavorable and the apple tarts and other goodies are really fantastic. It's small and cozy and the kind of place that you just want to have a coffee and a baked treat and hide away from the world :-), or at least I do! Even tho it might seem a bit touristy right next to Rocky's Grill and Soda Shop and just down the street from the White Squirrel Shoppe, BMB is totally worth a stop if you haven't been here yet. For us, it was a weekend in the mountains with the kiddo and our chi-wiener planning the hike up to Looking Glass Rock. What better way to start off the morning than carbo-loading on a blackberry scone, a country loaf, a croissant, a cinnamon croissant, and a blue cheese-pecan flat bread? Our take, the croissants are nice and buttery with that crispy flakey texture on the outside. Their scones are a firmer version than I'm used to having, but moist on the inside and powdered in sugar on the outside. The flatbread we ordered had a heaping portion of blue-cheese and the loaf was a bit more sourdough-like than we expected ("country loaf"), but still tasty. The best part was that all of the servings were ginormous and the price was extremely reasonable - i.e., $1.50 for a palm sized scone, ~$2.50 (??) for the flatbread that served us well for 2 meals, and a huge loaf of bread that survived the rest of the trip for $4. It's a no frills bakery with seating inside (8ish tables) and outside (only 2 tables). The lines to the front look intimidating, but service and the register keep things moving fast. They do sell coffee, but if carbo-loading is your preference, you'll have plenty to choose from. Just get here early, b/c when they sell out, they're gone - we got the last blackerry scone! Besides the items we sampled, they also have baguettes, cookies, danishes, etc. If you purchase a loaf of bread, they'll slice it on request with their fancy automagic bread slicer. No free wifi, but super friendly staff and an awesome product. If you're not staying local, parking can be a bit of a chore in this small town, but there are plenty of spaces across the street or down on Main and Broad Sts. 5 solid stars! read more

This is clearly a popular place in town. On Saturday morning, the door revolves open and shut with regulars -and tourists- stopping in for a cup of joe and a croissant, danish or scone. On this particular weekend, we popped into this charming store and sampled a plethora of goodies: a blackberry scone, a butter croissant, a cinnamon walnut croissant, and a bleu cheese flatbread with pecans and onions. We also took home a loaf of country wheat bread that they kindly sliced for us. Everything was generously large, ridiculously cheap, extremely delicious, and of course, served with a smile. We went late in the day and they were pretty well sold out of everything. I wanted a baguette, but the only one they had was reserved. They did have a whole half baguette. Yeah, a half baguette which I got. I also got some cinnamon rolls. There was not much left. My selections were good, though. An interesting note is that they do encourage people to call in and reserve bakery items. We never went back because of limited fall hours and also due to the fact that Ingles has such great bread and pastries. This bakery supplies a large number of the local restaurants in Brevard and the young lady who served us was wonderful with a good sense of humor. read more

Wow, this place is amazing. The two things I've eaten here that I'd label as a must-try are the banana chocolate scones, which are enormous and filled with fresh banana and chocolate that's somehow still deliciously melty even after sitting in the bakery case at room temperature, and the cinnamon raisin bread - it's pillowy soft and buttery with plump raisins and a thick coating of cinnamon sugar on the entire outside surface of the loaf. I've also had the sunflower oat, honey cracked wheat, and bracken brown breads. They're all outstanding. From all the effort they put into their baked goods, they could get away with serving crappy coffee, but even the plain coffee they put in those metal thermos dispensers is pretty good - and you get the first refill free (after that it's 50 cents). read more

On Veterans Day, my veteran mother and I were visiting Town of Brevard. It was our first visit and we were happy to see variety of shops and restaurants. After hitting a couple shops I decided to treat my mom to a quick coffee and cookie at the bakery. We walked in with 10 minutes to grab something before closing. I wanted to treat my mom on this special day. I asked if they had any specials for veterans and were told no. That's was fine. Then, we asked if we could eat our cookies there. The young man behind the counter, Jimmy, looked at the clock and said unfortunately we're closing in 10 minutes. We decided to sit down anyway because my mom's back was bothering her. We walked out at 5:01 PM but we're very disappointed when the two young men behind the counter had their friend, who had been waiting for them to get off, turn the lights off on us at 4:55 PM. The coffee was pretty good, and the cookies, peanut butter and ginger molasses, were terrific. The service was not what I expected in this cool little town. The trash was overflowing, so it must have been a busy day. read more

I come here most days when I'm visiting Brevard. The cinnamon rolls are some of the best I've ever had, and I'm also a fan of the apricot brioche and the various danish options. The staff is always efficient and friendly, and I'm in and out in a couple minutes. Seems like a place locals go and hang out in the mornings, and it's bustling all morning. We camped nearby and went to the bakery two mornings in a row. Everything was delicious and tasted homemade. We were extremely impressed! The best European/French Bakery in western NC! Every Saturday morning my husband and I get our fix of coffee with sticky buns and either croissant or chocolate brioche. You can't get a better croissant anywhere, even in France!! Trust us, we've been there! In fact, their chocolate croissant is much better than any we had in France. A big chunk of dark chocolate smack in the middle with a lovely drizzle on top...heavenly. Don't miss the cinnamon raisin bread. We always keep some in our freezer for great toast. I tried this bakery while visiting family and I can say that if I lived in the area, I'd be fat from this place. EVERYTHING is good! The strawberry Danish was one of the best Danishes I've ever had... And I'm Danish. Ever since the new owners, things have changed and not for the better. The small coffee is really small - couldn't get any smaller. The charge of .50 for anything after one refill is ridiculous - I am pretty sure enough people purchase one coffee (never get a refill) to cover the cost of refills for those locals who like to congregate in the bakery. I rarely sit in the bakery, but there are those who do (or did) - it feels as if the locals hanging out is now discouraged and uncomfortable. The employees who have been there forever are great. However, I had a very bad experience with a newer employee. She was nothing but rude and acted as if I was bothering her. I was purchasing a variety of baked goods and didn't appreciate the treatment. I actually got a grunt when I asked for a box. It's her job and if she doesn't like working with the public, I am sure there are others who would appreciate being employed. Last but not least, the quality of the baked goods was below average. The mocha/honey bun was stale and the inventory was almost nonexistent. I understand the low inventory, but if the inventory is low - at least have fresh baked goods. I work in downtown Brevard and use to love to recommend the bakery. Not so much anymore. (It actually made me sad that I felt the need to write this review) read more

We stopped in just for coffee--- but it smelled totally awesome when we walked in- all of the fresh baked goodies were having a party in your nose! We ended up getting a cheese, oregano and garlic striata- whch was absolutely incredible. And a peanut butter chocolate chip cookie- which was also amazing. This place knows what they are doing! Check it out- oh ya- the coffee was good too :) it's locally roasted. The guy who roasts it for them has a shop right down the road if you want to pick up some local roast.
