The café sits in Cathedraltown, Markham. The suburb may be sleepy, but it is undeniably picturesque, with the Cathedral of the Transfiguration rising in the background and gilded by the afternoon sunset. As a relatively new neighbourhood, it is serene and immaculate. The café itself is small and cozy, with charming interiors, including a wall of faux cacti behind the seating area. I adored the palette: warm and inviting, refreshingly free of the affected pretension that besets so many boutique cafés these days. On the barista's recommendation, I ordered the iced tiramisu latte, whose cold foam is evidently a favourite among regulars. It was surprisingly light and refreshing, the house-blend espresso settling nicely over the milk and lending a subtle nuttiness, never bitter or harsh. That said, I do prefer my espresso drinks bolder and more velvety. The pricing leans steep: $7.50 after tax for an eight-ounce drink. Still, the barista was delightfully gracious, and the space is so welcoming and restorative that I left unbothered.

There is a grand piano hanging from the highest point of the building! You can hear customers trying out the instruments (in the best way)...they actually know how to play. Oddly it's a calm, relaxing cafe - so much so that people are sitting at the tables, reading books or working away on their laptops. There is no real division between the cafe and the music store, you're pretty much sitting in it right next to the records for sale. It's actually really cool. They have some unique yuzu flavoured coffees. I had a simple flat white and took home a bag of beans which were delish (had hints flavours of chocolate and berry aftertaste which was lovely)!

I also purchased the set of 6 bear macarons. They are so cute! It's $23 for the set, no tax, and you're basically getting one for free since one macaron is $4.5. The macarons came frozen. I would come back and try out the other drinks, especially the non coffee drinks. Their specialty drinks sound good. Staff were really nice and they explained a lot of their menu to me.

There are a few tables that you can eat your baked goods after purchasing. The line up was also quite significant, a lot of people were browsing and enjoying the selection available. There's a selection in the display case that you can grab yourself and also some cake items behind the counter that the cashier will help with. I grabbed a slice chocolate chiffon cake, chocolate stuffed cake, lemon strawberry croissant and a strawberry mochi donut to try. Loved them all. The chiffon cake and lemon strawberry croissant was probably my fav as they were airy and light and not too sweet. Such a delightful dessert.

The shot itself was rich and layered: deep, chocolatey, and nutty striking a really nice balance between bitterness and acidity. It finished with a smooth, almost creamy note that made the whole drink incredibly enjoyable. The only downside is the size-to-price ratio. At around CAD $8.50 for what felt like a 10 oz drink, it's definitely on the pricier side for something that goes down this easily. Still, I'd absolutely come back when I'm in the mood for a more premium coffee experience. (Funny note - the barista and I had a small rant together about how people order "iced cappuccino" and macchiato expecting Starbucks milk sugary drink instead of the "proper" shot with dollop of foam. I was intrigued with their seasonal menu and I'm so glad I checked them out because their drinks were delicious and well rounded in flavour. Opted for their blueberry latte and peach jasmine cloud and both drinks were so delicious! The blueberry latte had a nice subtle blueberry flavour with the coffee. The peach jasmine cloud on the other hand was refreshing but had that savoury cheese foam on the top as well that worked well with the drink pairing. What a great local coffee shop with nicely curated drinks in Markham. Worth checking out for sure.

Also got a Kyoho Grape Hand-shaken Iced Tea. Originally asked for the latte to be iced, but when it was ready, it was hot. I mentioned to the barista, who double-checked the order placed, and said they could make me a new one. But because I didn't want to wait any longer, I said it was ok and I would just enjoy the hot version. I was still waiting for my iced tea, so while sitting, the barista came over and gave me some change and said because they had charged me for an iced tea, it was only right to refund me for the extra charge. I appreciate the honesty. The Honey Cream Latte had a nice sweetness to it. The Kyoho Grape iced tea was also slightly sweet, but balanced and refreshing. If staying in, there's a few tables inside that seat 2 per table. Some patrons were eating food that they ordered off the menu, while others were on their laptops, or chatting with their friend. I've been for both brunch and dinner and loved it. For brunch I got the shrimp cake eggs benedict. I love their shrimp lollipops at dinner, so I knew this would be a hit. The shrimp cake is crispy and delicious and the poached eggs were cooked perfectly with a very balanced hollandaise on top. I like the side of potatoes that are crispy to soak up the yolk and hollandaise. A tossed frisee salad rounds it out with some freshness and brightness. I also had their Banh Mi on another visit and I love their take on it. It has chashu pork belly, and fried chicken that is crispy and juicy. The Vietnamese pickled vegetables, cucumber, and cilantro balance the rich meatiness with some brightness and crunch. Very tasty sandwich. The tuna mashed potato salad is a nice variation on traditional potato salad, and the spring mix salad is a perfect accompaniment. For dinner, I've had the shrimp cake lollipops -- these are just amazing. Crispy and light, but flavorful. With a bit of tartar sauce on the side. We also had the Foie Gras and Chicken Liver Parfait which is luxurious and heavenly. It's layered with berry jelly on top and served with crunchy baguette and house pickled shallots which give it a shot of acid and brightness to offset the richness of the dish. The server asked if I wanted to try some sample bread, so I said sure! They kept on asking if I wanted to try different bread before buying, so it was really kind of them. I said I liked something with a stronger flavour, so one of the servers recommended the lychee red wine bread. It was amazing and I could taste the lychee right away. I got few buns to try and I loved the pistachio pretzel a lot! This is not your typical chinese bun place, so prices are a bit pricey, but definitely worth checking out!
