Ok...so I visited the Burn Institute because my 5 year old son started to find joy in playing with…read morefire and caught a sizeable toy on fire. Under my bed no less! A friend had told me the fire department had a program for junior fire starters, so I called and inquired about that. I was told it's actually the B.I. that offers the classes and that's how I ended up here.
We played phone tag for a week or so and finally got in touch with 'Tati.' She went over the preliminary stuff, my son's age, name, what happened...then we made an appointment to meet with her and go over the program.
We get there, she meets with us, takes my son back for a one-on-one interview, then talks with me and gives me a huge questionnaire to fill out. After this is all done, she tells me he's too young for the fire starter program, but *I* could watch the video (that he's too young for) and she would refer him to Healthy Families. Fiiiiirst of all, if he's too young for the program, why not tell me on the phone rather than waste my time. Secondly, the fact that she treated my kid like a welfare baby royally pissed me off. She didn't ask if he has insurance or anything, just automatically jumps to a welfare option. My son's dad is in the Navy, he has insurance, if she wanted to suggest therapy, she should've approached it differently and not just assumed anything.
So, if you're a burn victim or 15 and setting houses on fire, the burn institute is an option for you. If your 4,5,6..year old is playing with fire, just talk to your doctor about it. The Burn Institute will just show you a video, most likely showing you stuff that you already know can happen, and offend you.
