Last fall, we rented a storage unit, for 2 weeks. The day prior to moving our items out, we were…read morenotified by StorageMart management notified us that our lock was cut. We were out of town and drove 8 hours to file a police report and figure out was stolen. Upon arrival and surveying the storage property, we found the location had numerous security concerns. So beware of StorageMart's false advertising on their website. Here is just a small sample of the deficiencies in their security practices. 1) The was one security camera , not monitored with alerting, that was 200 feet from our unit that was mounted low enough to the ground, to be tampered with, which it was. 2) Half of the property has no fencing. 3) Homeless camp 1/2 block away 3) The keypad at the entrance can be overridden by software and this is a known issue by StorageMart. 4) The site doesn't have an employee or manager onsite everyday. 5) They advertise that this location closes at 10pm every night, when that is not true as some tenants have 24 hour access and other tenants must be out by 10pm. These are just a few items that are to be aware of. Whoever broke into the unit, spent hours sifting through our belongings and taking only things that could be pawned or worn. They urinated on the items inside, left a shirt and their bolt cutters. There were other break-ins, two others according to Columbia PD, that week as well. The police were helpful, but there is only so much can be done. StorageMart could have remedied this by securing their facility by completely and appropriately installing 8' fencing with security wire. Installing security cameras that effective, cannot be tampered with, and has alerting & is monitored. If there are break-ins, hire private security to drive through the property to be a deterrent and help secure the property and the tenant's property. Read the contract, StorageMart has a number of lawyers that have created an ironclad contract that states they are not responsible for any liability in securing your belongings. That is why I would avoid renting storage from StorageMart. Oh, their insurance that they require you to take out is worthless as well.

TLDR-- If you're considering renting here, run as fast and as far as you can. PLEASE save yourself…read morethe immense hassle and take your money elsewhere. ------------------------------------------------------- The ONLY good thing about this company is their third-party insurance claims department that pays out whenever your unit has been broken into and overrun with vermin. Please, allow me to explain: I began renting from Columbia Smart Storage in April of 2021. -- In May of 2022, after being out of town for quite some time traveling for work, I arrived to my unit being secured by a lock other than mine that read "Warning. See Management." I called the call center "office" and spoke with a young woman who could not provide me any answers, but said she would make a quick call and be back in touch shortly. After over 30 minutes passed sitting at my unit, I realized I'd previously saved the phone number to an out-of-state manager, Nick, so I texted him requesting assistance. He called but had no answers as to what was going on but said Jen, a local employee of the facility, would be in touch to unlock my unit by the end of the day. Soon thereafter, I received rather simultaneous texts from Nick and Jen explaining that the lock was placed on my unit because they found the unit unlocked and unsecured, insinuating that I was the one that had left it that way and that they had done me a favor by relocking it. I promptly called Nick and reminded him that I'd last visited my unit October of 2021 and there would've been no way that I could've left my unit unlocked and unsecured recently having not visited since then. He hesitated for awhile and finally admitted that there had been a series of break-ins. He said police reports were filed with all unit numbers and that mine was not listed. I inquired why I was not made aware of any break-ins, so that I could come adequately check my belongings. He assured me emails were sent out and I, in return, requested proof of that email, which was never received. Jen met me the following day to let me into my unit. Boxes and bags were torn into, many items stolen, and it was obviously infested with vermin. Jen assured me I had every right to access the security camera footage facing my unit and to contact Nick for it. I requested that several times from Nick at which point he decided to no longer answer my questions or requests. I inquired when exactly my unit was found unlocked and was provided several dates, but never a sure answer. I was also never provided answers as to why I never received any notification of my rental being broken into via call, text, or email. I filed a police report and was credited one months rent for the break-in. When I vacated my unit in June 2022, I let Jen know and she thanked me for doing so. I was later charged for July rent. When discussing the issue with Jen, she said billing isn't her problem and hung up on me. Any and everyone I have dealt with at this company has been nothing shy of unprofessional, rude, and incompetent. FIND. STORAGE. ELSEWHERE.

My daughter had her unit broken into and over 15K in possessions stolen. The run around we received after this from Kimberly, the "Risk Specialist" at Storage Mart has been hostile, unhelpful, and simply rude. They will not acknowledge the false advertising, the zero video surveillance (I was initially told they would check their cameras), or their negligence in omitting there was no surveillance whatsoever where my daughter's unit was located. In fact, the response I got was the following; "StorageMart offers video surveillance as advertised at our sites. We do not claim that video surveillance covers each and every unit or position at our sites." We were simply looking for a fair settlement to replace her items of which some are irreplaceable as they belonged to her father who is now deceased. I want all students and parents to know that their items are not secure and they will receive some of the worst customer service treatment in their lives if anything happens! Unfortunately because of the difficulty we had in having any sort of helpful communication with Kimberly, we have now had to hire an attorney.
