The bollilo bread were amazing, it is a good crusty bread with a wonderful texture to sop up your Menudo, Pozole or build a decadent torta or a loaded sandwich. The Ojo de Buey were fancy, they had been topped with frosting and raspberry or custard. They had a lot of non- traditional items as while, like Minion cupcakes, pies, and chocolate chip cannolis. Bowie Bakery is famous, and both Eric R. and I saw it on the documentary One Square Mile Texas: El Paso, which chronicled the one square mile around the Segundo Barrio. I did not even know Bowie had a west side location, but we were determined to go the location in the documentary (these are shown on Southwest Airlines' free TV series FYI). We made our way to Park Street and walked over to the bakery around 10:30 or 11:00 AM yesterday. There was no line, probably because that happens in the early morning. The lady helping us was very nice, but she was not very descriptive when we asked her what things were. I wanted to try the famous pan dulce. There were 3 kinds, and I wanted to know the difference - she said the yellow was "egg." I got that and a coconut cookie. Eric R. got a HUGE biscuit and a carrot cake cupcake. My m-i-l had told me the cannolis are really good but I thought those were enough for the 2 of us. When it was rung up, the total for all four was $3.55! I am not kidding. I thought it was an error. In any other bakery, that would be the minimum cost for just the cupcake! FOUR items for $3.55??! The cupcake was the most expensive at $1.25, and it was a normal size! The other items were bigger and cost between 50 and 75 cents! The history, the famous pan dulce, and the prices should warrant a stop here for anyone in town. read more

Whenever I visit El Paso, making a stop at Bowie's is at the top of my list. I never leave El Paso without stopping in and picking up Pan Dulce. My favorite are the Coconut Cookies... The best I've ever had. That's saying a lot since any pastry with coconut calls my name and can't be refused. The pan dulce is large, twice as big as the bread in other bakeries. It's moist, soft and of course delicious. There are cakes as well. The lines can get pretty long, but the staff is great about moving everyone along. Perhaps pricier than most other bakeries, Bowie Bakery is an El Paso icon. Perhaps the best pan dulce in town, it's worth an occasional trip. Their rosca de reyes, which they sell around Epiphany, is delicious. I haven't had a problem with surface parking, but I repeat: this place is famous. I used to be a big fan of the Bowie Bakery (been going there since I was 8) and I can honestly say that given the rise of other bakeries in El Paso the place really needs to modernize. True, this place has been visited by many famous people...but...there you go...That's about the only thing that makes this place special. Plus, given it's downtown Segundo Barrio location, it's not really convenient (or safe) to get to. 1. Patrons aren't allowed to get their own bread. You have a wait in a line with 25 other Lone-Star card users for about 10 minutes to have someone ELSE get your bread. 2. the prices are a tad high for bread and sugar. Other bakeries charge half as much. 3. Limited selection. Other bakeries (to include the Vista markets and Horizon bakery) have a HUGE selection. 4. The bread is good, but I wouldn't drive all the way downtown for what you get.... read more

Also, for some reason, the bread at the West side location is not the same quality as in the original location. Lastly, the service has gone downhill. Delicious bread. 40cents per white loaf bread (pan blanco). No longer the 10cents it used to be when I was a kid, but inflation takes its toll. Blame it on the Feds. Every time I've had their pastries, I'm always pleased greatly. The heart of "Segundo Barrio" is here and has been for decades. Hope this place stays in business for many decades to come. I'll stop by every time I'm in town for sure. As for the prices being higher than others as someone below commented, it's not always about finding the cheapest place or about the fastest race to the bottom. If a business charges a certain amount and you can pay it, then it's fine. Otherwise just make your own bread at home if you want everything cheap. Don't be cheapskates, people. Cheers! read more

My Grandparents had their first date there (cheap date, ya, I know!) and 65 years later we are still going their anytime when we're in the neighborhood and in need of some great pan dulce. I emailed an order in to get a Princess Tiana ( African American princess) ordered July 1 for August 2 I contacted by Christine @Bowie Bakery to say she has 2 cakes already scheduled for that date and is NOT taking any more orders for cakes between now and August 2 WOW that is bad business so I called Christine and she then tried to convince me that the doll is only 2 inches big the size of a finger and you don't want that . So I asked can I just get the princess cake for August 1 Christine ask me to hold the line and then she hung up on me. Well this let me know she had just Discriminated in not willing to make an African American Princess cake . Too Sad and when you try to contact the company by email to let them see this discrimination the emails get return undeliverable from their website . It's quaint setting in the middle of the south side of El Paso may not be the most welcoming of areas but you're mouth will have no objections. This is tex-mex pan dulce the sizes don't reflect real Mexican pan dulce and the bread is airy and dry. The doughnuts are really good better than Krispy kream. The cheesecakes crust is more like bread instead of it being crumbly and buttery. read more

Our family has bought Bowie Bakery Bread for FOUR generations. We have traveled to all parts of Mexico, Texas, Utah, California and even to Georgia. Believe me. There is NO other Mexican Pan Dulce like at Bowie Bakery!!! Have you tasted their glazed donuts? Por Dios these are fabulous. I don't care if we have to wait in line for 20-30 min. This is an amazing find, so much so I went both days of my short El Paso trip. I do not know the names but I will describe my favorites: their cream cheese filled pastry is moist and delicious, reminding me of better tasting kolaches; their little piggy biscuit breads are pleasantly sweet and filling, also another favorite; their conchas are best I've ever had (this is my favorite when I go to any Mexican bakery in Dallas); and their tamales are flavorful and perfectly cooked. I even brought some back with me to enjoy in Dallas. If you are in the area, this is worth the visit. read more

Third time my wife have gone into the location on Mesa to buy Bolillos for lunch. This is the third time we have received day old product. It is obvious that they sell out of their fresh bread early and then when people come in at 9:30 in the morning you get the bread form the day before. We called to voice our complaint and they were not helpful at all. This bakery has been around for decades and it used to be the best in town. But they grew to big and forgot about quality and service. Needless to say we will not be patronizing their bakery again. read more

Like many others I have been going to this bakery since I was a young child. I have very fond memories of going to the bakery and the sweet scent of the bread as you open the door. Recently though I have had a couple of very sour experiences. The most recent being yesterday with a cashier named Rita. On Tuesday the 23rd of August at about 1030am I had walked in to pick up my favorite bread. While waiting in line I noticed her being rude to the customers in front of me yet i still waited there for some esponjas de chocolate. I noticed there weren't any so i asked if there were any when she rudely replied 'no can't you see there aren't any left'. Funny because I had seen the other casheir working there bring some out from the back for other customers. When I asked her why she has to be so rude she quickly replied with ' If you have a problem with me go ahead and report me they wont fire me. My name is Rita P.' I quickly left in a fury no bread in hand I could not believe that she had been so rude. So today in a calm maner i called to speak their manager or the owner with luck of getting ahold of them. The cashier who answered said they were not available around 1100 and to call back at 0100pm. When i called back they had already gone home. Yeah right... I will sadly not be returning to Bowie Bakery until something is done about this woman. read more
