Visited Bow and Stern twice over the last month for lunch and their happy hour. In both visits the service was very friendly and I was surprised to see how quiet they were. For lunch we tried their steak and fries, seafood linguini, calamari, white wine mussels. Considering it is a seafood based restaurant I'd probably would skip the steak and fries next time as the meat was a bit chewy. Favourites was the calamari and mussels for sure! Flavourful and good portions. For happy hour I had the half order of Thai green curry mussels and baja fish taco. Compared to the white wine sauce I enjoyed the Thai green curry and was glad the waiter introduced me to it! We went here for a friend's birthday party group of about 15 people. Never been here before but the reservation was made weeks in advance. This whole experience started off wrong they reservation ended up 30 min late, which these things happened so we weren't put off yet. We finally got seated and the waitress was so apologetic and handed out the menus. Now half the menus were for the brunch service instead of the dinner service. Again it's not a big deal , she took our drink orders and we didn't get those for thirty minutes. Now we're getting put off so it's now an hour past when our original reservation time. We get ignored after the initial seating and only have water and are waiting for drinks. She finally takes our meal order and totally messes that up. Half the table got there mains before the appetizers (after another 30 min). Made another drink order two people didn't receive their drinks after 45 min. Half the food was cold asf . Orders were missing and we essentially had to beg someone to clear the tables we had. By this point it's been 2.5 hrs 1 round of drinks missing food orders and food coming out cold I was done and ready to go. Most of the time if there's a big group of the waitstaff you'd ask what the special occasion was about? Unfortunately that didn't happen ( it was our friends birthday) so at this point the birthday girl was not in a good place and was feeling bad because she wanted to eat here. We at this point requested to talk to management cause the whole situation was out of control and it's clear to me that there was a complete breakdown in the back of the house and the front of the house was not prepared or untrained or understaffed or all of the above. Many of us have worked in the food industry for years so we gave them more than enough grace to get their act together. They failed spectacularly, they did comp parts of the meals and services but that was too little too late. Now when we were leaving we actually bumped into other customers and they had a similar experience as well. All in all I must say that this was by far the worst dining experience I've had in years. I will not be going back anytime soon. I'm not sure what broke down during service and if someone doesn't get disciplinary actions over these issues I'd be very surprised. I have been looking forward and wanting to have a dinner here for a while. In the Brentwood area, it is emerging with some interesting options. Plus it's going to be getting even better as more construction projects finish and restaurants move in. The customer service and our host was fantastic. Funny and very friendly. They were excellent. Plus overall the setting kind of feels a little Mexico to me. Though it would be nice if they also offer some parking options like nearby places do. Even a one hour parking option would be much appreciated. It is a classy location and the food presentation was very elegant. The mashed potatoes in particular were super tasty. I've been here a couple of times for Happy Hour and gotta say it's pretty good. The place is quite large and has a nice atmosphere. We've had the fish and chips, the cod bites, the beet cured salmon and some of their desserts and some oysters. The food is quite good. The service was friendly. There is free parking for I believe the first 3 hours and the lot is pretty big but it does fill up. I'm guessing weekends can be quite busy. Can't wait to be back for Happy Hour........ read more

We came here during happy hour. Our server recommended the honey thyme fried chicken sliders. The sliders were very delicious. I like the fried chicken having a nice hint of sweetness. I also got three raw oysters which I don't recommend. Their oysters were very small. I had better ones elsewhere. B ordered the burger and beer. He said it was a good deal but he had better burgers elsewhere. The burger was not bad. My friend M ordered the honey thyme fried chicken sliders and a side of fries. We later order 3 pumpkin cheesecakes as desserts. The cheesecakes slices were very thin. It was very pricy for $14 for a slice. The cheesecake was overly sweet too. Service was good and I really like the atmosphere here. The place was well decorated and ambiance was great. My only complain about this restaurant is that its not easy to find when you are inside the mall. They are located above Ramen Jinya which I never noticed given that I got to Ramen Jinya quite often. Re-visited for a weekend brunch and it was super enjoyable! Busy, but not overly crowded. I think the design of the space reflects that, with plush green bench seats, wicker pendants, cool marbled tabletops, and large windows making the restaurant feel cozy and spacious at the same time. I got the tuna nicoise salad. Mixed greens with tomatoes, green beans, olives, herb-roasted potatoes, and soft-poached egg, dressed in a white balsamic vinaigrette and topped with seared tuna slices -- yum! It was a generous portion and everything was fresh. I didn't know where to start; I was half-worried about the salad spilling off the plate! The server was very intuitive and brought chopsticks. Checked out Bow and Stern for their late night Happy Hour after watching a movie at VIP Cineplex at Brentwood. The decor and ambiance is cozy, intimate, and modern. We got a seat by the windows so enjoyed people and car watching. Service was really great - attentive, friendly, and they checked in on us regularly without being around too much. Both the hostess and our server made great conversations that didn't seem forced or service level. None of that last minute "so how's your night" lines of them only showing some interest when they hand you the bill and remember they work for tips. We were excited to try the Honey Theme fried chicken sliders but unfortunately, they were out. We started off with 6 Happy Hour oysters. They were quite tiny and tasted okay - for East Coast oysters at $2 prices it was what it was. My boyfriend ordered the draft beer on special and chicken tinga taco for himself plus the half order of mussels to share. I also ordered the Artic Char as an entree. Chicken ting taco was solid and the half order of mussels was tasty. Really enjoyed the white cream sauce and wished it was served with bread, or you could order bread, to dip and really enjoy the dish. Artic Char was nicely cooked EXCEPT the skin was soggy and not crispy. I love a good crispy skin on an Artic Char and Salmon so it was a bit disappointing but fish was nicely cooked otherwise, ricotta was nice, but the real hero of the dish was the perfectly cooked broccolini that had a great satisfying crunch to them and tasted naturally sweet. We tried the Arctic Char and Lobster Poutine. My partner enjoyed the Arctic Char and the crispy skin on the fish before it got soft! The risotto was good, but a bit on a thicker side than we liked. The lobster poutine was delicious, but it did get salter towards the bottom. Service was friendly and food was delivered in a timely manner. The environment was warm and cozy with just the right amount of lighting. The decor was beautifully done and there was a cute mushroom shaped light on the table. Randomly decided to pay a visit to this place after a quick gym workout. The restaurant was still relatively newly opened so i didn't exactly have that much of a high hope. And i went in thinking i'd be having brunch but they didn't have it available that day so we just ended up ordering other things off their regular menu. But i must say, service is reasonable. Not understaffed, they are polite and the washrooms were real clean too so you can always appreciate that. They take all forms of payment from what i saw at the front. But okay here's my thoughts on the actual food. Food costs id say isn't exactly the cheapest for what it ended up tasting like but can't exactly say it's significantly really expensive either. The fish and chips was standard, fries was basic. Tuna Tataki was simple but good. That dish itself id give it a 4/5 .. the grilled cheese was super disappointing. Bread was soggy and the sandwich was rather salty and i think because it's a lot of knuckle meat in terms of the lobster .. that made it end up tasting rather not as impressive. As for the poutine the cheese wasn't even melted .. tried the cheese pull but there wasn't even any present. It was just in blocks. The soup was satisfying probably give it a 3/5 .. oysters are worth it for the oyster special. I'll probably go back to this place sometime and give it another review once i taste the brunch menu. read more

I would go back and try Bow & Stern again. Started in Abbotsford, it is a family (lots of kids) seafood restaurant with an interesting cocktail menu. I had the Prawn and Avocado Cobb Salad which is a huge serving of mixed greens, grilled tiger prawns on a skewer, goat cheese, avocados, with a greed goddess dressing. This is one tough restaurant to find, esp if one is parking underground. Easiest entry is via stairs which is found next to BMO, ascend up and you will find entry somewhat still in construction. Bow and Stern has tons of potential and an excellent addition to Brentwood Mall. Just needs to iron out the flow and details. Must mentions: Cod Fish and Chips- the cod is very well battered and the protein is nicely flakey with a good crust. Chips were excellent. Grandma's carrot cake- the cake is moist and flavoured nicely, I like the dense cream cheese frosting (it's nice cream cheese just not Philadelphia Brand). Must work on: Diet Coke is beyond weak, it was not crisp and tasted like brown water. Oysters were very lean ( I had about 8) and I understand they were from PEI, but it was substandard. May I suggest sourcing another variety more local. Beer was okay, wish they had frosted glasses or heavy glasses, some people like myself are slow drinkers. read more

This was my first time trying this restaurant. When I found out it was opening at Brentwood, I was really excited. The interior is so gorgeous. Really upscale and beautiful. The service and ambience were great. I ordered the thai green curry with mussels and clams. Wow, just WOW! It was amazingly delicious. It was actually quite a decent helping too. The only thing I would say is I was just a little surprised because it wasn't close to the traditional Thai green curry that I'm used to seeing elsewhere - it didn't come with a bed of rice, but it came with a side of fried instead (which I wasn't expecting at all). This is the second time I came back for happy hour but it's not on the top of my list for the best oysters as they were not well shucked and kinda hit or miss on quality. Salty 1 to a dry 2... Came here when it was first opened, let's just say the first time here my server totally disappeared into the ocean and the food were nothing but the taste of salt... Well back here again for the second time to give it another go because I did tried them a couple of times at their original location in Abbotsford longgg time ago and I was actually excited for this location to open up, closer to home but the first time came quite short. Greeted by the hostess and asked if prefer inside or outside on the patio. Decided inside dining by the window seats but was informed there's a 2 hour dining limit (say what?? lol the restaurant wasn't even busy, maybe 1/4 full...). After being seated, here were the food I ordered; 1. Boston clam chowder. Pretty good with a decent amount of clams, some might find it a bit on the saltier side, but I liked it. 2. 1/2 dozen of oysters. They were fresh but barely much to eat, it seemed as if they were anorexia. 3. Hot seafood platter. The lobster was a lightweight but tasted okay, the tiger prawns were decent size, the Arctic char was nicely cooked, had a generous amount of clams and mussels bedded underneath. However, the jasmine rice was undercooked. (How does one undercook rice nowadays? Didn't use those microwave minute rice right ?!? Right?) 4. 6oz beef tenderloin with mash and vegetables (seasonal menu). Ordered medium rare but came medium. Server apologized and had it redone, came back medium rare but it was quite dry and tough (more of a sirloin than tenderloin to me). Overall, this place has a lot of potential with its outside patio and its decently spacious layout inside but for sure it's more of a casual atmosphere than fine dining. This time around my server was good, unlike the server from the first time here, who just simply disappeared until the bill came. And what's with the 2 hour limit? Most diners weren't here for a cocktail and call it the day? Plus the restaurant wasn't even busy! The food was definitely not up to par and standard for the price (Properly cooking a steak is cooking 101). There are nearby places that serve similar food, but a lot better and for a better price. Nevertheless, it did went from a 1 star to a 2 star this time around. Came to have lunch with wifey friends. We were given water, menus and the server introduced himself and ran us through any questions we had about the menu. The decor was clean and new with slight nautical theme ie wood table and the art work. Don't think like pirate ship is more modern and chic. We decided on the hot seafood platter to share as well as calamari, and lobster dip. I ordered a bowl of the Boston clam chowder and one of our friends ordered the bang band shrimp tacos. The platter was exactly a described in the menu with 2 cooked lobster tails, 2x skewer of shrimp, mix of clam and mussels and a piece of arctic char on a bed of jasmine rice/side of brocolini. Served with a white sauce and tin of melted butter for the lobster. It was so very delicious especially with the white sauce. Love the lobster with butter.. can't go wrong as long a the cook is right which it was. the calamari though tasty batter...I felt for the size of the rings it was over battered as I couldn't really tell I was eating calamari. More like tasty breaded bits. Overall it was ok but I'd skip it next time. The clam chowder however is to die for. So packed full of clams and chunky/ creamy. Was so scrumptious to eat but also heavy. Definitely keep that in mind as it is a good hearty chowder as it should be. The lobster dip was ok imo ;crusty bread decent tasting dip but you couldn't really dip. More like scoop worth the provided spoon onto your crusty bread. It did have some chunks of lobster in there as well. A decent dip but not what I'm into. Didn't try the entire taco but did have a taste of the shrimp. Decent flavor and can only imagine the overall taste of the taco shell with all the ingredients together. One of the runners for the food however when delivering the dish said he was young Mexican and that the tacos were legit. On a side note he also was delivering food to the table next to us and we heard him saying that that fish was his favorite. Very well could be or just very enthusiastic about all the dishes? Anyways the food was very good and the service good as well, for this newly opened establishment in the new brentwood mall I would recommend it. Very good meal. read more

We went there to celebrate my mom's birthday. Restaurant ambience is quite nice - dark green seats, plants, bamboo-ish chandeliers. Service was below average, tried to flag our server several times and she was nowhere to be found. They were very slow with drinks, by the time drinks came, the food also arrived. At western restaurants, server often mark the seating of the patrons and their orders, so by the time food arrived, they don't have to ask who is having what dish. But our server didn't do that, so it was rather chaotic when food arrived. Food is average at its best, tasted okay but nothing to rave about. Dessert for the kids (just scoops of ice cream) took a long time to come. I thought it will be a decent restaurant at Brentwood, but unfortunately it's a disappointment. read more

The Chicken & Waffles were overcooked--the chicken was flavorless with a tough, bark-like texture, and the waffles tasted like overly sweet cardboard. The Breakfast Sandwich was hands down the worst I've ever had: a store-bought hamburger bun holding together an egg, bacon, and lettuce, topped off with an excessive smear of mayonnaise, rather disgusting. They serve water-down coffee so don't bother. It is a lovely place and I don't mind the service being average but the food was a turn off for me. read more

I came on a Saturday afternoon during happy hour. Place was pretty full - lots of reservations already so we sat at the bar. Very nice dining room. spotless. Service was great too, friendly and prompt without being annoying or overbearing. We ordered: house white wine - kind of mediocre but fine. Fish and chips (cod) - 1 pc fish and a portion of fries - comes with tartar and ketchup. Malt vinegar available upon request. This is plenty of food for one person - and the fish/chips are excellent. Fish batter was light, fish was perfectly cooked and fresh, well-seasoned. Chips were also excellent, at least double-fried, crisp on the outside without batter, soft and fluffy on the inside. Exactly how I like fries. The house tartar was pretty good too, but a bit runny. Gravalax served with bread - way too much bread. The salmon was just ok. small portion. I wouldnt order this again. Didnt taste bad, just nothing amazing and expensive for what you get. fresh oysters - comes with the usual mignonette, horseradish, tabasco, lemon. clean, fresh. But THEY DO NOT SHUCK THEM which annoys me to no end. You can open them but not bother shucking....why...just. why. no excuse for this. Free mall parking on the surface lot nearby. The main entryway is still under construction, so getting to them is a bit weird. You have to take the outdoor staircase right next to the BMO, and it will lead you to the path to their front entrance. Overall: Come for a nice atmosphere, great service, great fish and chips, and avoid the gravalax. Cant really comment on the rest as I havent tried it. Pricing at happy hour is quite reasonable. Calamari (3/5) - $19 Taste: An average calamari - not too oily, not too crispy. Flavours were pretty mild and tasted good with the tzatziki dressing. Portion Size: Good sharing size for 3-4 people Arctic Char (4/5) - $31 Taste: Quite liked my arctic char! Fish was soft, tender, and had a crispy skin. The sauce was very buttery (almost a little too buttery!) but good that it was served on the side so that I could control my pour. The risotto also paired nicely. Portion Size: Entree for 1 person Carrot Cake (5/5) - on the house! Taste: Yummy cake - moist and sweet, but not too sweet, with good carrot flavour. Deciding to try a healthier alternative for a Birthday Supper we went to Bow & Stern versus a typical Chinese banquet..the weren't any exactly directions to the restaurant we ended walking for about 30 minutes .. we were greeted by two young ladies who acknowledged that our reservations was for a Birthday.. we sat down and the hostess showed a birth card which was a nice token .. Sadie greeted us and I asked for suggestions which she narrowed down versus saying that everything was good.. she noted the Calamari appy, the wild salmon, the seafood linguine as well the lobster prawn Mac & Cheese and another guest ordered the prawn & avocado Cobb salad..we also grabbed the salmon cakes.. appies showed quickly.. both were good unlike some of the previous comments on the Calamari especially.. well coated with a slight crunch.. the Salmon was well seasoned and very nice.. the linguine and the Mac n Cheese were both salty and the Cobb Salad looked like an upside down frisbee which looked like it was prepped the day before and subsequently got flattened .. besides the salty issues and the frisbee it was a pleasant night thanks to Sadie's attentiveness The venue besides being difficult to locate, it was extremely noisy as the music was over the top as were those sitting at the end of the bar behind us watching a football game The ultimate disappointment was not getting the Birthday Girl her complimentary dessert.. so much so she and her Boyfriend went to get dessert elsewhere on their own afterwards... to prefix this, I called a few days earlier to see if I could order a Birthday cake but the lady said that they don't do cakes but one could bring their own.. then she said that the Birthday person gets a choice of a pudding or a carrot cake so we decided on the latter route that didn't materialize Would I go back? I've been here twice now. Vibe is awesome. Food is great. On both occasions the service was the slowest service I've ever experienced with no acknowledgement. I wanted another glass of wine and dessert but I didn't dare try to wave the server down.
