It's nice to be back on Yelp. I've been on quite a self-imposed Yelp hiatus due to COVID. I've only recently become comfortable with venturing out and about. (Comfortable is a relative term. Am I completely "comfortable" ? No, absolutely not. Have I accepted the risks & potential exposure I may receive by going out into the public? Yes, I have.) Plus, the last thing overworked, under appreciated (and paid, tbh) workers need is an entitled Yelper complaining about the time it took to sit in a properly socially distanced restaurant or any other issue that may arise that's completely out of their control. And, like I said, I've not been out much lately before this past month. What could I write a review about? My house? No one needs to see my 2 star review based on the clothes pile that continuously rises in the laundry room.
I've had a few review drafts in the wings, but the stupid app update deletes whatever I've been writing & saving for later. So here is attempt numero tres:
I don't live in the Middletown area. I actually have made concerted efforts to avoid it because of the time my mom's purse was stolen from a Cracker Barrel parking lot in 2001. No, seriously man, bad vibes. 7 year old Stephanie felt it, and so does 26 year old Stephanie. At my sparkling semi-new (I hit my year anniversary last week!) job that takes me all around the city & beyond, I met a wonderful colleague from the Middletown area that has encouraged me to give the local businesses by her a chance. Her first place to take me was Bourbon Kitchen!
Bourbon Kitchen sits in a plain strip mall anchored by a Subway and Boost mobile. On my original visit, the owners had an attached italian restaurant. Since then, they've closed it - I don't know if it was because of COVID or not, but I like to think it's because they're so focused on their booming bourbon bar (hehe) that they needed the extra space to expand. Yep, that's the story I'm sticking with.
It's strangely spacious inside the restaurant/bar, with ample seating even through COVID (yay, shower curtains!). My friend and I sit at the bar every time. Of course, this bar has an impressive bourbon selection, but I come to bars for one thing and one thing only - beer. And beer they have! They've a pretty nice tap selection too. I wouldn't expect to see that at a bourbon bar period, much less in Middletown. I will say, the winter tap selection was much more appealing to me than the summer one I saw a few weeks ago - but they may simply be because of personal preference.
The food here, for me, has been hit or miss.
- Cauliflower wings: Definition hit or miss. For sure order them well done, because they're super soggy otherwise. Basically, they've become a vehicle of the copious amounts of ranch I consume. I wouldn't order again unless someone else is adamant to have them.
- Dips: paaaaaassss. Guacamole is overly lime-y and queso is bland. It tastes like Tostitos queso, which the WW gal in me can appreciate - but I'm not coming here to count my points.
- Chicken Potstickers: I wish I'd get more in an order! They definitely give enough for the price, I'm just stingy. The Asian slaw is especially delicious. My friend has been noted to order this simply for the slaw.
- Southwest Chicken Salad: Delicious! It can easily be shared with two people. The crispy chicken they put on top I'd eat by itself. If you cut it up and call it popcorn chicken, I'd believe you and happily eat it. Also, the overly lime-y guacamole actually works here and is a welcomed addition to the party.
-Truffle & Gouda Burger: I would NOT expect to find a sandwich this fancy in Middletown. Something this tasty? Definitely, there's good food to be found everywhere. But something that makes me feel the need to break out my finest pearls? It's a pleasant surprise!
-In N Out: There are many local variations of the famous In N Out sandwich. All are good - but they don't compare to the real thing, and this is no exception. As long as you keep your expectations down a tad, you'll find you're enjoying a well-made, flavorful burger.
I also think it's important to note that their service is always awesome. I've only been in a few times, but I feel like I've been treated like a regular each time. Maybe it's because I'm with a regular, but they seem to give that personalized hospitality to everyone. I've always been the type of gal that believes service can elevate bad food, and it can break great food. Here it's no exception: even when I make poor menu decisions, I know the staff will take care of me.
Looking at this review, I've realized I've rambled on for quite a bit. I mean I'm notorious for that anyway, but this is my first review in eight months...go big or go home friends. Or better yet, go to Bourbon Kitchen and enjoy a drink. read more
