We didn't go here for the food so much as for the brasserie atmosphere. The food was just ok-- VERY traditional French food at a great price point. So don't go there expecting great food. Even tho many locals go here as well. We intended to eat here on a previous night but the line was very long (no res ever taken) so decided to arrive early the following night at 5 pm. No wait at all. What bothered me the most was that my party of 3 was seated at the absolute worse table at the very entrance of the restaurant which was wide open. In fact I asked for a table more inside the restaurant, but my request was declined. In fact, many other parties after mine were seated at much better tables. I don't get it, I really don't. My French friend wanted to bring me here but the line was too long, so I came back myself another night while she was out of town. It was starting to fill up fast around 6pm and I figured I'd best prepare for an awesome meal. Couldn't have been more wrong. I was seated at a 4 person table, as a solo diner. There was a couple already there, and I ended up next to them and across from another solo traveler. Not at a community table made for different parties mind you, at a normal 4 person table you'd normally only see 1 party at. It was uncomfortable to say the least. Then my waiter came to take my order approximately 30 seconds after I was seated. I told him I'd need some time to look over the menu. He came back 1 minute later (this is not an exaggeration by the way, I had just gotten through the wine list only), and would not accept me telling him I needed more time still, he just wouldn't leave. I asked for his recommendation and he rudely told me he doesn't know what I eat, so I said I eat meat or anything else, and he pointed to something on the menu and took it before I could see what I was getting. I asked what wine he'd recommend and he told me my only option was the small bottle of white for 1 person, I guess I'd be screwed if I had wanted a different kind and was okay ordering a full bottle? The food came about 3 minutes later. It was beef on a skewer with some kind of oily green sauce, and French fries. The meat was incredibly dry and chewy and the sauce tasteless. The fries had no flavor. When he asked if I wanted dessert and I said no, he looked shocked. I didn't want to risk trying something and having it be awful too, and waste a good dessert moment in Paris. I walked to get an eclair down the street. I left about 15 minutes after I had arrived, it was clear they wanted to rush people through and get them out asap. With the line, I kind of get it. But it made for an awful dining experience. Ok, let me just state what this place is. It's a budget friendly dining hall that's like a cafeteria hall for college kids. There were lines out the door - not for the food but really for the experience of a loud, noisy casual dining hall and food less than 10 euros. This place is not for me. We came on a recommendation from a local that it's great but came out sorely disappointed (prices were amazing!) but too good to be true as the quality of the food was less then appealing. Everything tasted like it was from a can and the fries were most likely McDonald frozen bags of potato sticks (as easy as it is to consume, I question the presence of potatoes). The steak we ordered was almost raw! Like they slapped it on the grill to chat but not actually to cook the meat. I was pregnant so I had to give up the steak and eat the beef slosh over some boiled macaroni from a can noodle. The food - cafeteria level I'm sorry it was just terrible and not representable of French cuisine. Just don't do it. The crepes we had across the street helped mask the disappointment of this food. Service? Don't even ask, they forgot about us, forgot parts of our order. It's not their fault almost bc it's busy as hell in there but they just don't give a shit, Bill for 4 of us with mains, a few sides and a pitcher of sangria (which we didn't order, we ordered a glass) but we couldn't even correct this bc the server was no where to be found. While this restaurant may have been in business since 1896, I am afraid that you should not be tricked into assuming that it must be great because of the long line ups outside. It may be busy and packed due to its history and prior fame and the tourist continue to flock. Tonight's dinner was not great. In fact the worst one we had during the last week. Escargot- cold. The boeuf bourguignon and beef with frites were not winners either. The boeuf bourguignon did not arrive as indicated in the menu. Instead of potatoes it arrived with bland macaroni pasta. The meet was soft and flavourless. The beef with frites was cooked to order and was medium- but was tough. Sadly the meals were not finished. Service seemed rushed and you are not a guest you are a table being turned over for the next tourist that is waiting in line. This is a pretty well known establishment in Paris, apparently and we just happen to have our very first meal here. We were lucky enough to have a seat right away and were greeted by our waiter. They have menus in both English and French so it's great for tourists. The restaurant is beautiful and bustling inside. Our waiter was quite hospitable and not at all rude as I was previously warned they would be. I ordered the spaghetti bolognese and I thought it was tasty. Heart and satisfying after my long flight. Service was excellent! Our waiter was very attentive and quick. This was our first stop to eat in Paris and enjoyed the food at the classic Bouillon Chartier. Don't get your hopes up for the food, it was average. It's just fast and something to try when you are in Paris. Escargot was okay, (I've had better at other restaurants in Paris). (+) Service is super friendly (the server we had more than willing spoke French despite what we hear about French people/ French hospitality) (+) variety of traditional French food at a reasonable price During busy times, it can have a long wait it appears (like Disneyland lines that serpentine through!) At the time we went - early Sunday evening (maybe around 5-6pm), there was no wait; so I would recommend coming by earlier or less busy days. We had the steak and frites, escargot, duck confit, and foie gras. -I had the duck confit and found it dry, when it should be moist. - Escargot was good (like my significant other says - like clams), which ease my nerves (since I haven't eaten it in years!). -The foie gras came with bread but it was heavily toasted that I wouldn't recommend anyone with sensitive teeth to chew. I enjoy eating crisp apples and it was nothing close to crisp. Only couple of complaints- 1) they seat you next to other parties even when there are empty tables. I'm not sure if this is due to convenience sake (or an efficient way of increasing table turnover) but you're literally next to another party. It can be difficult to enjoy your meal in a bar-like seating arrangement and the restaurant was half empty anyway! 2) they reuse the leftover bread in the bread basket! The server took away our bread basket during the middle of our meal (we actually weren't done yet since the foie gras was a lot and we needed more bread to consume with it). He placed it one counter away, and then we saw it being served again to the party next to us). Now I give them +1 for reducing food waste, but ..... is it worth risking someone's health? Casual settings, we saw people just hopped off from bus and off train station and see there with bag packs and luggages. The profiterole dessert was the highlight for our meal. We came here based on a recommendation from our airbnb host and we saw it had historic/popular feedback. It was by far the most disappointing meal we have had in our five weeks throughout Europe - much less Paris. The waiters were over-worked and it felt like a bother to ask for anything, and extremely unfriendly - which I would be too if I worked there. Luckily we have had some excellent meals throughout Paris to set a high standard, and this was just gross on so many levels. The food was flavorless, tough to chew, and made us feel sick after the fact. We tried the escargo which was probably the most decent out of everything but even that was lackluster. Tried their eggs which was literally a spoonful of sad mayo and a hard boiled egg that gave me depression when I looked at it. We have ordered this many times before and its always decent presentation and delicious flavor from other places in Paris. The worst of all though was our main dish which was steak, fries, with chimichurri sauce (the recommended meal by the restaurant). When I think about it, it makes me feel sick. It was beyond greasy, meat was impossible to chew, and had no flavor. Even the fries were shite. The only saving grace was the ice cream we had was good. So disappointing and I write this just trying to warn first time visitors to not let this be their first taste of Paris. So many better options and service. Definitely not up to the hype During our meal, the pigs snout was pretty good, but when our mains came out, they were not as good as I thought they would be the prices were affordable put the meat was tough and fatty. I think the restaurant was decent, but I would not go back when I tried to call over one waiter. I didn't finish my sentence, but he just left, which was kind of weird. Wow! I don't post many reviews, but this place was so remarkably bad, I think it's my duty to warn. It's cheap...that is the most positive thing I have to say. Poor service, meh "food", and uninteresting atmosphere wraps up this place. They were out of the dish I wanted, which is ok. I had the profiterole chartier for 4.90 euros swimming in a chocolate sauce with good ice cream inside iso of whip cream. Our server, Yarrick, was AWESOME...totally wonderful with his service. He was efficient, helpful, and very patient. When I read some other TA reviews of the poor service by some of the servers, we were quite apprehensive, but Yarrick was a STAR in our books! For us, there was a discrepancy of about 3 euros but our server, Yarrick, was very quick to rectify that and to confirm that our addition was correct. For both a historic and affordable French dining experience, le Bouillon Chartier is the ideal spot in the heart of Paris. I showed up before its opening at 11:30, and there was already a queue to get inside. Fortunately, I was one of the first 20 people, so I got a table once its doors opened for lunch. I was seated with other people at a table for four (as apparently, it's part of the dining experience) which was at first awkward, but all the same pleasant conversations afterwards. The menu was simple, but effective, as I opted for the 20-euro three-course meal with wine. Terrine starter was okay, but the boeuf bourguignon was wonderfully-tender and the highlight of the meal. The moelleux au chocolat was rich, albeit a bit dry. Food itself won't blow you away, but for the price, you can't get it anywhere else in Paris. Aside from the average food, it's the service, atmosphere, and price which make le Bouillon Chartier so popular, as well as worth having a meal in. We arrived at midday and there was no line, which was amazing because we tried coming the evening before and the line was insanely long. We were taken directly upstairs to a table by the hostess who was very friendly. It took a very long time for the waiter to stop by our table even though he had taken the order of the table next to us. Which was fine because we expect service in Paris to be very slow. When the waiter finally made it over to us we ordered everything based on all the reviews we've read. We ordered the Beef Bourguignon, the Pommé Frites and the Escargot. Our food came almost immediately! Then we understood why. All of the meat was very tough and chewy. It was full of fat and tendons. The macaroni noodles were overcooked which is surprising considering how quickly all our dishes came out. The escargot was extremely chewy and had some pieces of shell which completely ruined that dish for me. We had to flag down the waiter several times just to get some water and he did so begrudgingly. The bread and butter they gave us was stale and flavorless. Considering we were here in the middle of the day when it was not busy, I expected to have a better experience. Overall I would never recommend this restaurant to anyone, even as a last resort. You're better off going to one of the outdoor markets that always have freshly prepared food for half the price. I see the appeal of this place. You can get dinner for 2 without drinks for maybe 20-25 Euro. You get decent portions and the food isn't bad. It's not great, but not bad. The waiters are faster than any restaurant you will eat at in Paris. They don't rush you out, but they bring that check like it's an American restaurant. It is a large restaurant but with tables on top of each other. You may be a group of 5 or 7 sitting at a table sized for one fewer. You may be a couple sitting in between two other couples with adjoining tables and sharing a carafe of water. If that's what you are looking for, go for it. The decor, the lighting, the wait staff's uniform... made me want to dress up mid-modern outfit from Mad Men and dine here. The pricing were very reasonable, we had the escargot, the pate plate, and some glasses of sangria. Don't be afraid to share tables as they'd do that if they're busy. The service was great as long as you're a decisive person, which we were. The food tasted amazing and the escargot was tender, less chewy compared to some of the other places I've been to. Puzzled. I'm usually a generous Yelp reviewer, however I cannot give my recommendation to visit here. First off, showed up at around 500pm and we had to wait 45 minutes in line... After waiting all the time, we were sat at a 4 top table with another random couple. No prob, I'm down to meet new people. But if you're looking to sit alone, look elsewhere because they maybe it you with another group even though there are tons of open tables. Here's where it goes down hill. We say Bonjour and are very friendly, but it takes 15 minutes to get a menu and read it. By the time we do get it, French waiter comes around and says "action, let's go!" forcing the couple to the side of us to rush and therefore also making us rush because we were next to them. We give him our orders and him writing on the table after 20 minutes of waiting he comes back around and re writes our order. Ugh he probably most possibly forgot our order and should have acknowledged his error but noooooo he went along his business without apologizing. Oh well, we just wanted our damn food already. So another 20 minutes go by and food comes out. Overall, BASIC food that missed the mark...escargot came out barely above room temperature warm, steaks were ordered medium rare but came out barely rare+, steaks were also the worst quality meat that I have tried in a long time - tough, chewy, barely cooked, no flavor, rubber, stringy, ew, fries were average.... The experience in general was a solid fail. Honestly, could have had a better steak and eggs dinner at Denny's or IHOP, at least I could have requested A1 sauce. On the plus side, the wine was a good deal if you ordered the carafe. But in my opinion, I would go somewhere else. My boyfriend and I ordered a small sangria pitcher (only 3 euros!), escargot, shrimp with mayo, house soup, stew and chops. The house soup was okay - tastes like a watered down pea soup. The escargot here ruined my vision of what french escargots are supposed to taste like. They were oily with a watered down pesto taste. The best appetizer was the shrimp with mayo - simply cooked, with a tasty mayo. The stew was bland and apparently the chops were better than the stew although they were tiny. Fries were also very average - fried without seasoning. You're more likely to immediately get seated if you're a party of two than a bigger party! The way the tabling and service works at Bouillon Chartier reminds me of a french cha-chaan-tang (which is basically a bustling diner in Hong Kong). We had to share a table, share our water and our bread with another couple. Weird because no one told us that, but okay we figured it out. Probably won't be back because hopefully the next time I'm back in Paris, I can afford meals better. Overall, everything here just tastes okay to me. read more
