It's a tourist trap! Do not recommend. Ambiance is fancier than Denny's but it's fast, mass produced food restaurant, like Denny's. Food was so mediocre that it made me question French cuisine as a whole. Both the beef stew and steak with fries were so bland that we had to add substantial amount of salt just to add some flavor. While the wait staff works really hard, service feels rushed. We asked for still water and the waiter brought us multiple bottles of water that we had to purchase. Their receipt is on the table hand written. Hard to question discrepancy when the receipt is hardly legible. We went for lunch and got in line about 15 mins before it opened because the previous night we went to a different location that had a line that literally wrapped the block. Just don't understand the hype for this place.
I don't know if my pallet is not refined or what but the food here was not good. My sister got the steak and fries and they don't ask how you went your steak cooked so they gave her steak that was chewy and pink inside. She didn't enjoy it. I ordered the chicken and fries, and although it wasn't bad, it wasn't good either. The chicken had no seasoning or flavor it was just fried chicken. The service was quick, the waiter wasn't nice but he wasn't rude either. The place is nice but it's communal seating so be prepared to eat right next to a stranger. There is always a huge line to get in, people wait hours for a seat so again maybe my American pallet isn't refined enough but it was not a pleasant experience. I will add a picture of my sisters steak and fries.
Worst meal is French history. Don't go here. Makes Dennys worthy of 3 Michelin star. Drinking French tap water has more flavor. Service is slower than molasses. Ambiance seems pretty to the eye but that's about it. Go elsewhere please. Save your hard earned money for the vacation and don't go here.
Meals in Paris doesn't have to be expensive! For a decent meal and a great price, Bouillon restaurants are the answer! Some will take reservations ahead of time, but if you only have a party of 2, it will be fairly easy to grab a table for a short wait! We tried to go to 2 Bouillons, this one was the first one. Our waiter was a sweet and friendly gentleman. The food was filling and good for the price, I would definitely come back.
Where do I begin? A friend recommended this place to me and I loved every bit of it. Old school classic French food at an affordable price. I couldn't decide what I wanted so I ordered a bunch of things and it was delicious. My server was fantastic. The vibe was classic French decor and great energy.
We got here close to 7pm and there was a crazy line all the way to the corner of the street. The line moved relatively quickly for how many people there were and it took about 25 minutes for us to get in. They sell merch (cups, post cards, etc) in the line along with sangria for 1€ and the sangria was pretty sweet, but I enjoyed it. The inside has two floors and is incredibly loud and crowded and you will likely share a table with other people. Each waiter is serving multiple groups of people, so your wait time for ordering and having your food and check delivered depends on how busy they are. Our food came pretty quickly after ordering. We ordered the veal rice and duck confit along with mixed salads. The portions were enough to get us full and the veal was tender and the sauce was delicious. The duck confit was crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. The complementary bread was perfectly crispy outside and soft inside also! Our meal total was about 24,50 €, which is quite affordable! When we left (around 8:30), the line was even longer than when we had joined it. Highly recommend this place for a yummy and cheap meal if you are willing to wait in the line and don't mind sharing a table (and water/bread) with strangers!
I don't think I would come here again. I didn't hate it but I didn't love it. We waited about 20 minutes in line to get sat. The service was kind, a little slow but that's the culture. They want you to take your time and not feel rushed. We got the order of snails, I liked it. It was my favorite compared to other places. They were bigger and had good buttery flavor. The mushrooms weren't my favorite item. They lacked flavor. I got the Steak frites with mushroom sauce. I ordered the steak medium but it came out almost rare/med rare so i didn't finish it. The fries were good though. I liked the Beef Bourguignon with pasta tho.
This place was recommended on a lot of forums cheap and traditional French food. The space was really huge and when we went it was not that busy with many empty tables so I was shocked when they seated us on a 4 top next to another pair of diners. We had to share a basket of bread and also be squished next to them which wasn't the best situation. Service was a bit hectic but we ordered leeks with dressing and escargot as our appetizer and duck confit and pork chop with a side green beans as our mains. The leeks with dressing were interesting and the dressing was surprisingly good with the flavor of mustard and vinegar. The escargot were super tasty and garlicky and we wished we had ordered more than 6. The duck confit was tender but I wish the dish was more seasoned as the potatoes were plain and all I tasted really was salt. My sister said the pork chop was average and could've been more tender. The side of green beans looked like they could have come from a can but were decently seasoned. The profiterole dessert was not bad but the chocolate sauce was a bit bitter. This place is good value but the taste was pretty underwhelming and I'd suggest other Bouillons over this one.
When you are in Paris there are many things to do. Many visitors try for the ultimate in high end restaurants. Places with long lines and high prices. They expect a certain level in food, variety and what is available. We have all done that. But sometimes it is smart to have a recommendation or two from someone who does live in Paris. They will see what you want and make the recommendations of places they will go to for dinner. They will know of the tourists but still recommend what is typical for even someone who lives there. It is typical French cooking in a very typical way. This is Bouillon Chartier. The Bouillon Chartier embodies a singular spirit, and the history of a unique dining craft. Waiters dressed in black rondin jackets and crisp white aprons waltz among the tables serving classic French dishes to everyone no matter who you are. They will serve the food. You need to accept something very traditional and common amongst the French. It is truly classic. Our friend who grew up in Paris recommended we come here to the location on the Grand Boulevards. This is the first of the restaurants and dates to the time. The tables are close together. People of two can sit at a table for 4 with another couple already there. The place is packed and moving fast. The waiters will give you the menu and provide water if required. If you need a cocktail or bottle of wine, they will bring that to you quickly. And, in France, a bottle of wine is typical for dinner. As we look over the menu we know instantly what we want to have even before we entered through the doors. The waiter came back and took the order on the table cloth covering our spot. This way we know, and he knows, what we will have. Placing our order we had to wait. But it does not take long with the waiters, the team and the crowd of guests. This is French dining as it was for a long time. This is not fine-dining. This is the dinner everyone would have at home or in a local place. For us, the bottle of red wine was brought to the table and we poured a glass. Bread was also placed next to us. Finally, out came the appetizer. In this case we ordered a true classic. The Escargot. These are the edible snails which are a popular French delicacy. They are often served as an appetizer, typically prepared with garlic and butter. The shells are often kept with the snails for serving, and specialized tools like snail tongs and forks are used for eating. With fork in hand, and the tweezer to hold the shell it was time to take out the snail. Cooked perfectly, it was covered with butter and garlic. It took no time to eat 6 of these. They were large and tasty. Of course, the best part, is when you break the bread up and dip it into the remaining butter and garlic. This is what it truly is about. The taste, aroma, the fragrance, the touch is ideal with each bite. Even one of the snails is finished. This reminds you of Escargot. It is very typical of France. Once complete, we had to wait for the next course. First up was a true classic again. This was the Beef Bourguignon. Very much what to expect when stepping into a local place. My mother use to make this, so I always knew what to expect. It is made with beef, bacon lardons, carrots, onions and mushrooms slowly cooked in a rich red wine sauce. The beef is soft and perfect., The flavor is ideal. The taste is what to expect. This came with a dish of noodles on the side that are used for dipping the beef covered with the sauce into. It is a great combination to enjoy. Next we also had the Duck confit. This is using duck that is cooked slowly for a long period of time, thanks to the protective, air-blocking seal formed by the rendered fat that the duck is submerged and cooked in. The duck is soft, tender and moist. It is served with small potatoes and fresh string beans and is very typical. Again, a classic meal to enjoy with a glass of wine and some more bread. The dessert of choice was again very traditional. French Rice Pudding, It is a creamy French classic rice pudding recipe made on the stovetop and is the perfect dessert with crunchy almond topping. There was also a touch of vanilla for extra taste. And to make it better, this was placed over a sliced piece of lemon cake to enrich the flavor. It is rich, creamy, tasty and different. The Bouillon stands for traditional, simple and hearty cuisine, made possible by quality producers and artisans. This is an immense dining room with its brightly lit mirrors, hanging chandeliers, surfaces in sculpted wood and gleaming copper, and even the rack of little drawers where regulars would keep their napkins back in the old days. The team at Bouillon Chartier is professional. They know what to do. They know what to do. Move fast. And listen to what you have to say or request. The cooks are at the top of the grade knowing how to cook in the classic style with the traditional recipes. This is truly Paris as we know.
Stopped by for an early dinner around 4:30pm on a weeknight. There was no wait and plenty of empty tables, however, we were told to share a table with another pair. This didn't make sense because other tables had two people per table, it wasn't busy, and there were many other tables available. This experience was uncomfortable and made it hard to enjoy the meal. We came for the cheap escargot and also ordered the dunk confit entree. The escargot was delicious with the side of bread & the duck confit tasted bland. Overall the food was affordable but tasted just okay and service was disappointing.
Came here 10 years hasn't change at all, packed out for lunch. Simple menu, reasonable prices in a beautiful old dining hall with great atmosphere.
Less gluten free options then the other, food was very mediocre, staff was not pleasant. Cute inside but not worth it.
Came here around 8pm on a Wednesday and there was a line out the door. In the middle of the line there's a lady selling sangria though, so that's a bonus When we finally got in after around 20 minutes, we were sat at the same table as others as a group of 2. They do have English menus available if you're more comfortable with that. We got a number of dishes to try, including the herring, the duck confit, the chicken, a side of mushrooms, as well as the profiteroles and creme caramel for dessert. The food came out fast once we ordered, but it took a long time to wait for our server since he was in charge of nearly 20 tables and clearly overwhelmed. The food was good and affordable, and it felt like a simple and classic spot. It was pretty chaotic and noisy inside, but the restaurant is packed to the brim with guests so it's understandable. I would probably come back if there was no line and quicker service!

TERRIBLE! Our waiter was just extremely rude and the food was very subpar, even for the price. 30 seconds after sitting he came over and said "action action hurry up" to rush us to order. Meanwhile the French couple next to us who were sitting before we were even seated, they ordered after us and were not rushed at all. We ordered 3 appetizers and 2 entrees since my mother doesn't eat much. After I said my mother doesn't eat much he said "but she can eat bread with mustard... no I know how this thinking works" - as if to imply we were trying to be cheap? For some reason, he gave us a third entree. When I flagged him, he just said "madame" in an exasperated way and walked away. After I put the entree to the end of the table, finally he came over to ask the problem. When I said I didn't order it, he claimed we had or else he would not have written it down. Every time he came to deliver our food, he would say "action action" to get us to move our hands away for him to put the dishes down. Even the French table next to us stifled their laughter when he did this. When we were counting our cash to the bill, he kept saying "oh my god oh my god" as if he was annoyed at how slow we were. Because of all his rushing we left before the table next to us, who - let me remind you - was seated before us! As for the food, the steak was terrible. It was small and very hard to chew. Afterwards, all I felt was hungry and as if I ate cardboard. I will say, the escargot though was very good. With such and service and mediocre food, I do not think this place is worth it, especially if you are not (1) Caucasian or (2) French. They treat foreigners but especially non-Caucasian foreigners very rudely. read more

This place is very overhyped with subpar food and service. This is a total tourist trap. There are far better choices for eateries. My boyfriend and I stood in line for about 20 minutes before we were seated. The restaurant is huge. As previous reviews stated, you're seated at a table with other guests. So my party of two sat at a table of 4 with a mother and daughter. Upon being seated we were greeted by the waiter. He was initially very pleasant until our choice of food and drink dissatisfied him. We both asked for Cokes and water. The waiter literally gave out a condescending laugh as if us wanting to drink a Coke was beneath him. He then asked what kind of wine would we like and we declined any. He literally rolled his eyes saying "okay" and walked away. We literally had been consuming so much wine during our trip that we both wanted to take a break from alcoholic beverages; sorry! He brought our drinks and then asked to take our orders. My boyfriend ordered steak and fries with escargot as an appetizer. When it was time for me to order, the waiter asked what appetizer did I want. I informed him that we would share the appetizer my boyfriend ordered, and he smirked as if, again, us not ordering what he wanted was beneath him. I continued and ordered spaghetti and a side of French fries; I had a craving for fries that day. The appetizer and food all came out together and everything was cold and flavorless. My boyfriend and I literally took a few bites and looked at each other in disbelief. We literally left full plates of food on the table. The waiter came over to check on us and we asked for the check. He asked if we were done eating and I informed him yes. Hell broke loose! He snatched our plates from the table and walked away saying "waste of good food." I know he wanted us to hear him because he said it in English instead of French. Us being tourists and not being fully aware of social norms in Paris, we both kindly paid the bill and walked away from the restaurant without a complaint to a manager. While we waited for the waiter to bring the card back, we both went to the restrooms and came back to the table with interesting findings. Both restrooms were not kept and smelled awful. We had an awful experience here. Avoid at all cost! Restaurant suggestions: Re Di Napoli, L'Atelier Etoile de Joël Robuchon. These are the only restaurants I remember by name. read more
We ran into a lady at a retail store. She recommended this restaurant. We find it and get in line. A guy comes up to us and tells us we are not in line. The line is back there. So there is. A line to get into line. So we get in that line. We waited. So we finally get in line. Then we get into the building. Oh no it's just another line waiting to get into the line. Yep. So we waited. We finally get into the restaurant. Get seated and they put another couple at the same table. ?? So we order. Menu is all French. My wife can read some French. I order the chicken she ordered the Duck. Chicken was ok the Duck was amazing. Like stupid good amazing. The atmosphere was very interesting. I liked it a lot. The bill came. It was 33.5€. I felt like I robbed them. I would do it again. read more

Obviously, it is hit and miss with this place, given the imbalance in reviews. Our early dinner experience resulted in excellent food, a welcoming waitstaff, adorable alleyway entrance, in a landmark Paris cafe with appealing architectural details. We had a variety of foods from steak to chops to potatoes to grean beans to pork ribs to wine and dessert. Everything was good, the waiter was just the right amount of interactive without being pushy. We were quite comfortable here, it is a good place for families because it was not so pretentious that we were worried about being tourists. We wanted to experience an old-school restaurant on a budget, and we found it at the Bouillon Chartier. read more

The rudest place I have Ever been. They wanted to seat us at a table with a column in the middle. I asked for another table. Hostess had a hissy fit. Said we r Sitting face to face, what more could we want. I pointed out we are sitting face to column. I would typically leave at this point. My friend didn't want to make waves :( Escargot, had one. Ridiculously salty. Left the rest. Traditional v as stew had no flavor, except for the salt. Save yourself the grief, I haven't had a worse French meal anywhere. read more

I'm glad we did not wait at all to eat here. Came in and were seated immediately. Avoid this place for anything other than wine, cheese plate and the desserts- which I didn't have but looked delicious. The house white wine offered that evening was good but not great. I did like the frenetic atmosphere and it actually added to my limited enjoyment of this place. The waiters are rushing around and turning tables. So don't come here for a long and leisurely dining experience. It was an easy walking distance from our hotel so we decided to try it out even though many reviews described it as a tourist trap. It is. And the food was not good at all. The steaks are not cooked to order and are probably just seared and left under a heat lamp then pushed onto plates. My daughter's baked chicken looked inedible and was whisked away by our supposedly attentive waiter and brought back moments later with just sauce added. It was gross. My mushrooms were delicious so I had to recognize them but everything else, other than my wine, were a waste of money. There are other places nearby to dine. Please don't wait in a line to eat here. read more

This place is terrible. The food and the service are the worst. My Mom and I dined here on a Sunday (most places are closed sundays) the prices are very cheap and the food tastes like it too. ° with the exception of the escargot The beer was warm and the food was cold. My Mom asked our waitress, "Hi! Are you my Server?" her response was.. "I am A server, not yours." I've been in the Service Industry for-ev-er.. and I've passive aggressively insulted people, I'm not going to lie. She was super pretty to look at but that doesn't make it okay for her to be such an asshole. read more

Party of five with no reservations for Christmas dinner? Bouillon Chartier had a line that stretched around the corner but warm 2€ vin chaud from the bar was a nice distraction for the 30-minute wait. Once inside, we felt the lively buzz of family & friends sharing an authentic French supper over the holidays. Steak was pretty tender & the steamed fish was fresh. The duck confit was sublime & the escargots were out of this world. My kids can be picky eaters at times but they were scarfing down the escargots like nobody's business. This restaurant should be high on anyone's list when in the City of Light. Tres magnifique! read more
The frantic almost chaotic pace of Bouillon Chartier put me in mind of Orwell's Down and Out in Paris and London. Its menu is as untouched by time as the architecture, but it operates as if it's in its prime. Loved by tourists and locals alike since 1896, It's not hard to understand why this place continues to exist, they provide a decent meal at a reasonable price. In fact, seated next to us were two cash-strapped, American students just trying to make it. The front of house is no nonsense and because the kitchen is so quick and efficient, it can, at times, lack consistency. Our steak, requested medium-well, was a little underdone, and many items look as if they have come from a cafeteria steam table. But the assembly-line vibe only adds to the charm and nostalgia of the place. Its ambience is not unlike Sanborns in Mexico City. I recommend the terrine maison and highly recommend the baba rhum. For the uninitiated, keep in mind that you may be seated next to strangers - space is at a premium. read more

If you're in Paris and looking for great tasting family style dinner for an affordable price This is a great spot ! We ordered (pictured) a bottle of wine appetizers and 2 meals and we only spend 46 euro ! We Only gave 4 stars because the service wasn't great and everyone working is rushing around but if you can over look that the food was really good !! No line 5:35pm on a Wednesday. The place looks iconic but it's not my cup of tea. I get a bit of a cheap vibe from being here. Not the best ambiance. The bread was served without anything (butter, oil) and looked very unappealing. The wait writes the order on the disposable table mats. The lighting is harsh. The water bottle looks like it hasn't been washed with soap in ages. Oy vey! read more

[I'm puzzled by the negative reviews here. Note for visitors and fellow Yelpers: the concept of service in France is entirely different from what it is in the US. Unless you are in a Michelin-starred restaurant, the purpose of service is... to serve the food you asked for. Waiters are busy and overworked, and not there to give you individualized attention. You can ask for a recommendation on the menu, but do not expect constant "is everything ok" and such; if you need something, just get the waiter's attention.] I was born in France and lived there my whole life, and was looking for an arch-traditional restaurant to show a friend classic French cuisine -- not an easy thing! Mastering the classics is no longer de rigueur in today's fusion-crazed food world. I found the Bouillon Chartier after extensive research and discarding many famous and beautiful but culinarily disappointing institutions (Maxim's, Procope, etc.). Located in an unremarkable area and hidden from view, the Bouillon is a gorgeous 130 year-old wooden marvel, with brass highlights, large surrounding mirrors, red and white tablecloths and waiters scurrying about in aprons. The food arrived quickly and did not disappoint -- the flavors were as authentic as it gets. We had the escargot (delicious aromatic butter), roast chicken (much better than most chicken you'll find in US restaurants, with dark sections and flavor), andouillette (love it or hate it, but try it! Wonderfully browned on the inside, and full of meaty textures), paté maison (exceptional! My favorite thing that day), a great and inexpensive bottle of rosé, some Lillet, Cognac, Pastis, cheeses, and puff pastry with whipped cream -- for 60 euros! Most items are less than 12 euros, with many entrées less than 5. The menu is in French only at the restaurant, but is in English online. Otherwise, use your dictionary or google it! Gets very busy at night, but is less busy at lunch. No reservations. read more
To get in we had to go through one line and once we got past the lady at the head of that line we went through the revolving doors and then we had to wait to get through the next lady.... And only then when another lady got the nod from the very sullen, efficient and somewhat scary maítre d'hótel were we seated. As you may have gathered this place is very popular with the locals, simply because it is cheap yet the service is high class - an unusual combination that is their winning formula. The interior is breathtaking, wonderful high ceilings with distinguished art deco influenced fittings. I had cucumber salad to start which basically was cucumbers... Seriously, but I love cucumbers so happy days. For main I had chicken and chips. For dessert I had puréed chestnuts with vanilla through it.. I also had my first snail - chewy very chewy! Service was incredible and intimidating - please try your best to know how to order in French as the servers are in a rush and don't have the time to guide you through the menu. They also write your orders on the paper table cloth which I found so interesting. The restaurant used to be were the service industry workers and mainly working class would go to eat after work. So the food is cheap and simple and it's great that the tradition continues. read more
One of the restaurants I had the opportunity to eat in while in Paris. The line was so long and the wait to just be in the actual like to go in winded around the sidewalk as the manager was motioning to people to come forward to let him know how many people in your party. Granted this is a very popular restaurants because the moment I exited the subway, walked away to when I returned, people kept lining up to be allowed to enter. Since they do not make reservations, it is really a first come first serve basis. Apparently, the history behind this restaurant was that it use to be a cafeteria and the inside decor is still reminiscent of that (even after recent renovations to expand the restaurant). The tables are closely next to each other and the back of chairs pushing against your neighbor behind you. Nonetheless, you can feel the giddiness in people's voices as they hang their coats above their heads in the make shift coat trays located way above you table to allow you to eat in peace without worrying about your belongings and to save space as well for the restaurant and then make their selection off the menu. Then the oddest thing happens. Instead of jotting down your order on a notebook pad with a pen/pencil, he instead marks up the white smooth looking paper table sheet set on the table as the way to take down your order. Apparently, this is the way they take orders, but they also remember everything you want in their head because all our orders came out perfectly the way we wanted. When you're ready to pay the check, you expect the usual bill on a small rectangular piece of paper. NOT at this place. Those markings that the waiter jotted down earlier is actually your check as the prices are listed down next to the food selection and the bill is calculated up RIGHT THERE AND THEN IN FRONT OF YOU. People leave satisfied and bring more friends and family to return to eat again despite the long winding lines. This place holds a dear place in the hearts of many of the locals and it is because of that, they keep coming back again and again. read more

Out of all the places in Paris, this is the one place I regret. After talking to the front desk at our hotel (which was probably a red flag to begin with), he suggested we go around the corner and eat at this place. Prices were beyond reasonable - a little too good to be true! The place was PACKED beyond belief. We were seated upstairs and got to review the menu. When we were about to order, the waiter told us we each had to order an appetizer, entree, and a dessert. We were really confused because everyone said it was really reasonable. We waited for another waiter to come and he didn't require us to do that so we ordered with him. We got the white fish and the sea bass and it was really gross. All of the food was pretty much inedible. I mean from the time we ordered to the time we got our food it was barely 5 minutes. How could they cook food that fast? I'm assuming they precook all of their food and serve it once its ordered. I definitely would not recommend coming here and do not be fooled by how crowded it is. The food was absolutely horrible. read more

Loved this place! Cheapest meal of my entire trip! Recommended by an awesome hotel staff, we got kind of lost making our way here, finally got here and were seated in a tiny corner, with a cute server. Didn't know he was Asian until I looked up! Not that being Asian really matters, but wow, excellent service, his name was Edward! Gave us some great recs of his favorites: Noix de Joue de Boeuf Bourguignonne Ou Stewed beef cheek with macaroni - WOW the sauce from the beef was soooo good! Filet de perche sauce champignons White fish with mushroom sauce - amazing sauce :) AND, no technology here! They write down your orders on the table cloth.. paper thing and at the end write down the prices and total everything up (mental math!) for you! No tax, no service charge. Definitely coming back! read more
