Beer selection is fantastic one of a kind. I'm reviewing this place for the second time, after my first review was deleted because I wasn't 21 (I don't get what kind of BS that is, but okay). I'm legal now, and I've been here ~*legally*~, and I could not get over how RUDE the staff was. Constantly trying to one-up you, not really interested in good discussion, not being able to answer half the questions I had. When I requested one beer they kept trying to suggest I try x instead. I'm sorry but when a paying customer asks for x, you don't berate them for asking for x instead of y. Just rude, rude rude. We live on east side and this place is not worth the drive, at all (and this is coming from a person who will drive over to Seattle just for a hair cut). With Tap House Grill on east side and the microbreweries all over the place, I don't really feel the need to come here. There are better places in the area to get import beer as well without being hounded by self righteous employees. read more

A few friends and I stopped in here quickly to grab some beer. The guy behind the counter was nice and offered his assistance as soon as we walked in the door, but was courteous enough to let us browse for a while by ourselves. I picked up some very interesting local ciders - one blackberry, (which I so miss after not living in the NW for years) as well as a Habanero Raspberry that was, to say the least, ridiculously intriguing - and turned out to be fantastic. This is definetely not my favorite beer store, they do have a lot of variety including many from all over the world and a good local selection as well, but staff are not very helpful. There is also no parking lot, it closes too early for a beer store, beer is very expensive (very little in the 2$ area). I also found it difficult to tell what beer was being sold in packs versus individual. No one offered me any assistance and some of the cases where the beer is stored are so dark you have to squint to see what's inside. They do have some sort of tap stuff going on near the back which appears like you might be able to order a glass of beer to drink while you look around but since no one ever spoke to me and no one was standing there I guess I will never know. Other beer stores in seattle area are better in my opinion. read more

The selection of beer here is amazing and extensive... wall to wall beer... and not beer that is made from crap (aka crap beer). From Belgishland to South America, they've got you covered. I had to leave before I sold my liver for more beer (you only need one of those right? And since I have two... Brilliant!). I believe that they will order beers that they don't have for you too. One of the best beer stores you'll find anywhere... but it just happens to be a 5 minute stumble away from me. This is great!... or real bad. read more

If you are looking for a good selection at decent prices in a boutique city, check out this place. Just like most of my reviews, I will reiterate: those who expect polished and perfect shopping experiences a la a big-box store need not apply. I prefer my shopping experiences to be homey, intimate transactions that do not pay heed to going over every fixture in the store with a dust-mop or fine-tooth comb. These guys do a good job of keeping a home-brewed business going. I would prefer to buy my brew from the fellows at *Bottlewerken* than say, QFC or Slaveway. wandered in here yesterday and low & behold it is BEER WEEK! For Bottleworks this means a makeshift bar has been set-up with 6 samples of exotic beer offered at $1. Not $1 each, 6 tastes for $1! Unbelievable. And we got expert advice on beers that age well. Extra awesome. I love this place. read more

Although some of the imported beers are pricy, deals can be found here. I picked up a sampler of 24 beers for $25. (Apparently people come in all the time and pick one beer out of a 6-pack, so they end up with a bunch of singles and throw them into a heavily discounted pack.) They have tastings every Monday from 5pm-7pm where for $1 you can get the equivalent of several beers' worth of samples of various brands you probably wouldn't normally sample. The staff is friendly, enthusiastic & helpful. Even if you don't know much about beer, they can direct you to something that you're more likely to enjoy. They also have chocolate and cigarettes so you can get all your fixes at once ;) They carry a variety of magazines about beer, homebrewing, flyers for local events, etc. read more

I went with a friend from Belgium, they said this place has great beer and chocolate. We go the beer- it was good. But they didn't have the "special" chocolate they usually do- apparently there is an issue with the supplier the guy said (not sure I beleived him). It's difficult to maneuver in there with only a few other patrons browsing (careful not to tip over the display!). Maybe this place is the only place where you can find what you are looking for- but there are other places to try...trader joes, met market, cost plus, whole foods, etc. Worth a visit- nothing THAT special. read more

This is where you should buy your beer! -Drive out of your way to support the place that is partially responsible for the entire West Coast Craft Beer Scene. -Enjoy a delicious draft beer while you shop. -Chat it up with the clerks and get the scoop on all the cool Seattle beer news. -Bring a small group and have a bottle share. Bottleworks has a more than adequate number of bottles and taps (peppered with rare finds) all stored properly in their dark beer temple. If you're a corporate-beer-loving-costco-shopping-tommy-bahama-wearing-numbskull this may not be the place for you. But for the rest of us, this should a be a weekly stop to stock the fridge and enjoy the beauty of this perfect little beer shop. read more

Before I can finish the word "bottle", hubs has his jacket and keys ready to go. This is his favorite watering hole. Unlike him, I'm not a beer connoisseur but I like going because the vibe is great, very chill and unpretentious. Trevor is friendly and really knows his stuff -- he even gave us excellent suggestions for our Portland beer trip. They have beer tastings on Mondays and unique pours are always available on tap, barrel-aged beer anyone? There are over 950 beers from all over the world. You can purchase any bottle and drink it while you peruse their well edited selection. The patrons are super friendly. I even had someone buy me and hubs a beer because he wanted to introduce us to one of his faves. I brag about this place constantly to out of town guests and can't wait to introduce more people to this special place. It's truly a haven for beer enthusiasts. TIP #1: There is a parking lot right next to the store. Unfortunately, it's not free anymore. TIP #2: The same person owns both Bottleworks and Brouwer's Cafe. Typically if you miss the Bottleworks' Monday tasting (5-7pm), you'll find the same pours at Brouwers. TIP #3: They allow well behaved dogs in the store, like my pug. TIP #4: There is an amazing little wine shop right next to Bottleworks. Wine and beer, all within steps of each other. TIP #5: ...Geez, what more do you want?! Just GO! read more

Bottleworks, oh how I love thee... When I first moved out here, in late 2001, I didn't know anything like Bottleworks existed. When I found out about them, I was in heaven. Now, my all-time favorite bier is Weihenstephan (any variety, I don't care. Cold, warm, whatever. Hell, I'm tempted to try it hot one of these days and see if it makes a good tea!) But, from visiting Bottleworks (and Brouwer's Cafe), I've found quite a few others that I've found myself in adoration of. The store *is* relatively small... That's one thing you have to take into consideration when you walk in. Even still, they manage to pack a HUGE variety of bier into those coolers. And, chances are pretty good that if they don't have it, they can probably get it for you. Just ask one of the guys at the counter (Kevin is extremely knowledgeable) and find out. It might take a week or so to get it, but if your favorite bier isn't worth waiting for, what is? Plus, if you want to be as true to form as possible, they have a selection of bier glasses you can choose from as well. Granted, it's a rather meagre selection, but most people come there for the bier... not the glassware. Tastings... They do tastings once a week, every Monday from 5 - 7. And, the best part, it's only $1! You might not get a lot of bier in the tasting (although, they're usually pretty heavy on the tap) but it's definitely a good way to try new bier and see if there's something else you might like! Friendly, knowledgeable, decent prices (the prices ARE pretty much the same at QFC, but if it's just bier you're going for... Support local businesses. It's better for the economy. Besides... Try asking the clerk at QFC what the difference is between Lucifer and Duvel. ;) read more

Very nice selection brews! You can *almost* get lost in walking around and looking at everything gorgeous chilled bottle. Came in real quick and bought a bottle of Port Townsend Porter and John John Hazelnut by Rogue (made me super happy they had that one!!) and also got my WABL passport stamped by the dude! (If you reading beer-related reviews on Yelp, go look up WABL. Now.) They also have stuff on tap, so you can drink while shopping, genius. Very nice staff, very nice selection. Still a good beer store, but the attitude of the employees has really gone downhill over the past few years. Less of an offer to help find things, and near eye-rolls when non-beer-expert questions dare to be asked. It's also a shame they converted the place into a bar as well. It creates a crummy, tiny pub and at the expense of a more lousy retail experience. I'll continue to shop here for the really obscure stuff, but 80% of the beers they carry can be found elsewhere in Seattle and sold with a smile. read more

This is a really fun shop. Awesome selection and helpful staff! You can also go into the shop and have a drink there if you'd like. Multifunctional. I went in to buy a gift for a couple of friends and started eyeing the mead. After looking at their options and choosing a bottle, I went to the front to ask if I had made a good choice. The guy looked at the mead I had chosen and said, "Oh yeah, I had some of that once, and it was good -- knocked me on my face!" Decision made. You can count on being able to pick up your PNW staples here, and if you're into Pliny, they'll have it if it is available. I had a glass of 120 IPA there recently, so that was nice. I don't go here if I am trying to pick up something that I want to drink immediately. The coolers are pretty much for show; they don't do much for chilling. Which I can admire, to certain aspects, but sometimes I just want to grab a 6er of Steel head Pale or Green Flash IPA and... drink it. In my opinion, half of that stock should be yanked out of the coolers and stored at room/cellar temp, and the rest of the coolers should be cranked up. I've been refused entrance much much prior to closing time at least 5 times. A lot of beers are not priced on the shelf, and a lot of the bier can be found much cheaper close by. As a person heavily rooted in the beer industry, both personally and professionally, I don't come here to find out what is new. I don't come here to be excited about beer, or talk passionately. I love beer. Not the beer that Bud, Miller, et al would have you believing beer is, but REAL beer. This is place for it. You will not find the usual suspects here. I have been frequenting this place ever since I moved to Seattle. Not just because it's in my neighborhood, but because it's the best place in town and probably one of the best beer stores in the country. It is a mecca. They have over 850 beers that get rotated through the seasons. Their staff, for the most part, is very knowledgeable and can guide you to what your palette desires. They keep their beers chilled at the proper temperature, and no, that does not mean ice cold. Good beer should not be consumed in this way. 56 degrees please. My only complaint is that some of the beers are a bit on the pricey side for what they are. For instance, their Fantome prices have gone through the roof in the last year. But hey, that is hardly even worth complaining about given the massive offering they have. read more

I LOVE this place. This store for me is like walking into the garden of Eden, for real. I love beer, I love trying new beer, and I love the smart gentlemen who work at Bottleworks who help me spend way too much money there. They really know their stuff and can provide great reccomendations. Great selection, knowledgeable staff, and they have beer from Lost Coast Brewing, my favorite brewery in Eureka, CA. Their selection is fantastic, true. They frequently have rare beers, and can point you in the right direction if you've got a hankering for a certain type of beer. My big qualm with Bottleworks is the the fairweather service. I'm no stranger to beer, and I can generally hold my own in discussions about beer... frequently, though, when I'm here, I feel like the staff wants to do little more than one-up me with their own experience, or look down on my preferences (I have some nostalgic tastes for Midwestern beer, it's true). Other times that I've visited, staff members were far nicer. I'll be back for the selection... but not the conversation. read more

OK, I am not much of a beer drinker! GASP! I know.... However I do live in Wallingford. I walk by here regularly and have popped in twice for beer tastings.. like why taste beer? People do it. It is amazing how tripped out people can be about their beer. The varieties and flavors and packaging! You can learn a lot here about beer, history, geography and how others are so fascinated with a realm of life which has passed you by. Why did I leave one star out? It's dark. It's a store full of beer! I found a Roslyn Brewing Company lager I had just had at the Puyallup fair - awesome! And my husband found a few new beers to try. This is a great place to come in, try a new beer and have a conversation with a friend. I have been here a few times and look forward to coming back. Luckily it's right by a friend's house and I can always sucker him out to grab a beer with me. The guys that work there are great. I usually go there later at night and I have never been kicked out. They do last call and then let you wrap up your conversation at your own pace. For me, that is huge. I never feel rushed to finish my beer and get out the door. It's more natural and enjoyable. I'm yet to buy a bottle but they have a huge bottle selection as well. If there was ever a type of beer you were after, I'm sure Bottleworks would be more than able to send you in the right direction. I definitely look forward to coming back soon. read more

Right in the heart of Wallingford, you'll find this beer mecca neatly tucked away on the corner in a cool old-timey building. When you walk in, you'll find that it's reminiscent of those more readily available 99-Bottles shops - but, quite a bit smaller and way less main-stream...this shop feels special! Don't let the size fool you! I was very impressed at not only the selection, but the knowledge of the staff. I walked in asking for a certain German bier that I love and can typically only get at one of these types of places, and was a bit disappointed they didn't carry it. This disappointment didn't last for long! They were able to recommend a similar style beer that I had never tried. Before I knew it, the top was popped, the contents cascaded into my glass and my taste buds were dancing! Love that they're pet friendly, too! :) read more

A very good beer store that could be better. First of all the good: In 2009 they changed their license so that they can sell kegs. This has had the un-expected consequence of permitting them to sell draft beer in the store as well as allowing customers to have any bottle in the store opened for them to try. The down-side is that kids under 21, even babes in arms, can no longer enter the store for reasons going back to Prohibition. The bad: as other reviewers have noted: it's way dark in here. Why? To protect the beer from UV light, they say. Bunk! UV filters are readily available for fluorescent tubes. Instead, they stick duck tape on the tubes to block all wavelengths of light. Just plain stupid to substitute appearances for functioning technology. Even more stupid is their insistence on retailing the products of Big Cancer along with the more noble beer and chocolate. Could they no forgo the tiny profits from cigs for the sake of their customers' health? I guess not. All in all, a neighborhood asset. I just wish they'd deign to enter the 21st century instead of being so stubbornly backward. read more

"Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy!" This place was amazing. While looking kind of cruddy on the outside when you walk in, it is clean and nice! Most amazing selection of beer that I have ever seen and at reasonable prices. Great place to go if you're a beer fanatic, are picky about what you drink, or are trying to find a very special bottle. Got some of my favorite beers, grabbed a couple that looked interesting, and best yet, I had to get a "Viking Blood" aka Honey Wine to share with a buddy. I like this place, the people here are great and they know thier beer. I like good beer and I like to mix it up and try new things. If you are looking for a place to buy some better beer than what your local stores mostly carry this place has the vartiety from Oktoberfest, pilsner's, IPA's, porters, ales...they have a huge stock and they do growlers if you want to step up to the bar and try some of thier yields. When we moved to Seattle one of my favorite questions to ask people was "What are the best places to get great beer?" There were three consistent answers: Brouwer's Cafe, Bottleworks, and Uber Tavern. Bottleworks is a great bottle shop. The staff is knowledgeable, the beers are well organized and there is a great mix of crowd pleasers, rare treats and new products in their selection. However, the taps at the back of the restaurant are the real gem of this establishment. These 8 taps of perpetually rotating goodness are the All Stars of what is available in the market at that moment. If there's something you like, get it while you're there because chances are that it will be gone by the next time you visit. read more

This place is pretty chill which I appreciate, they let you browse and if you want something specific just ask for it! If you go early or on a weeknight you will get great individual service and the staff is always pretty knowledgeable. They have 5 rotating beers on tap in the back of the store with a small standing bar so you can enjoy a pint while browsing. I think this is a nice touch! (note: you can also order half pints if you are looking to taste). If you go on a Friday or Saturday night after 7 you will most likely run into a crowd and sometimes a party atmosphere which can be a lot of fun but can also appear off putting until you just talk to someone because ultimately this is a really friendly, educated and joyous place. In other words, if you go on a Friday or Saturday night be patient! read more

I've tried Bottleworks on two separate occasions over the past few years. Each time I went in with an open mind. Both times I've been extremely disappointed in the service. The person working the register and (occasionally) pouring beers ought to be ashamed of himself. Perhaps he should consider that a "little" customer service goes a long way. It would be one thing if this was the only bottle shop in Seattle but it's not (see Chuck's and The Beer Junction). I can't believe anyone would choose to come here on a regular basis. If you can get past the moldy/musty smell that hits your face as you walk through the door and if you can get past the burned our lights in most of the beer coolers, then perhaps this is the place for you. Home of the $3 twelve ounce bottle of beer. They do have tasting hours on Mondays from 5-7 for a dollar. That may be interesting. What is not interesting is selling beer that isn't anything special for lots of money. Don't get me wrong. I like spending lots of money on good beer. I like good beer. I don't like stupid expensive beer. If I'm looking for a boutique or rare beer that is carried by a distributer, I'd check this place out. I don't think my taste is too exacting for this to happen with any kind of frequency, but let's assume it is possible. This venue does not have local homebrews. I asked. They told me some other place that does, but that they do not. I assumed that much of their stock was homebrews and that was what these single beers and $10 six packs were with some badly printed sticker on a generic cardboard box was all about. Of all the places in Seattle to go to buy beer, Bottle Works takes the cake. Between the friendly and informed staff to the inexpensive yet high quality growlers they offer, this business really has it's stuff together. One of the best things about Bottle Works is that you can choose a beer from almost anywhere in the world. They seem to have all of the best micro-brews on hand and it's pretty great that they have that little tasting bar in the back. It's good to know that in this world of upscale wine shops there is still room for an upscale beer shop. read more

These guys are great. They have a HUGE selection. Most bottle shops have a good selection of regional beers, which is fine. But when I'm looking for a specific import, like a traditional Baltic Porter or Munich Helles, this is where I'm going to find it. On top of that, the staff (admittedly I seem to always work with the same guy) is knowledgeable and very helpful. It's a drive to get here for me, but always worth it read more

Wow! Why can't every city have a store like this one?! I took home a basket of beers that I had never seen before. 1 of them had been fermenting since 1996. It was one of the last few of it's kind. Score for me! I was disappointed that there wasn't a larger selection of beer t-shirts, hoodies and glasses. Excellent craft beer store with knowledgeable people with a good variety of beers. They even have about 6-8 beers on tap which is rotated on a heavy basis. And being from the East Coast, seeing nothing be Washington, Portland, and Northern California beers was AMAZING! read more
