When in Madrid... eat the world famous cochinillo roasted in the oven that hasn't been turned off since the 18th century at the oldest restaurant in the WORLD!!! Eating the cochinillo at Botín has been on my foodie bucketlist for years and it finally got it's checkmark today. I booked our 1 pm rez for 2 around two months ago (not necessary I think - spots are always coming and going but if you plan to eat earlier and not the traditionally followed Spain eating time you might consider reserving way in advance as it took me a few tries to find a rez time that wasn't around 10 pm). I made my reservation very seamlessly on The Fork and was sent a reconfirmation of reservation by the official restaurant via email the day before the special day. We arrived around 11 am as we were already hopping around the area and ended up forming a queue of other eager diners hoping to get a slot in. As many have noted, service was cold but at least the food was good. We got their serving of cochinillo (delicious and you need to sop up the juices with your bread), the lamb (ok this one is life changing and I thought deserved more hype than the cochinillo) and for a veg, some interesting white asparagus which ended up being delish. Washed that all down with some tinto de veranos and to round it out, shared an oozing overflowing basque cheesecake for dessert. There is no one to ever do it like Botín! Simply iconic and a must visit when in Madrid. Full meal totaled to roughly just under $100 USD. Great experience for simply being a Madrid and food industry icon but probably won't repeat it again. For both the history and the food this place is a bucket-list item. A guitar/lute group will serenade you with flamenco music while you dine. And they have a Spanish & English menu there. The Steak was cooked to perfection it was Rare/medium Rare and very hot but tender and freshly cut beef. The peas and potatoes were also delicious. Was it worth the money? Not really. Was it worth the experience? I suppose so. As far as food ordering goes, you obviously need to get some Sangria and the tasty Suckling Pig! I note this if the oldest restaurant in the world and because of that we MUST try it out but will I come here again? I think not. First, you need to make reservation because this place is popular, you know, being the oldest and all. The service is just ok, not horrible but not that friendly either. But my main issue is with the food. I had one of the specially, the Roast Baby Lamb. It came with 3 small whole potatoes. The lamb was nice, crispy skin and juicy meat but tough at some section. The taste was one dimensional, pleasant but nothing out of the ordinary. The potato sides just felt boring. I wish they would add some vegetables to the dish to make it complete. At 27 Euro, this felt expensive. Chicken Fricassee with Almond Sauce is better in my opinion. At least this one is tasty. It comes with rice. The flan for dessert was delicious. Perfectly soft and jiggly, not too sweet. If you get bread when the waiter offers it to you, please know that they will charge you for that bread. Came here with some friends during a recent trip to Madrid. As the oldest restaurant in continuous service, you can tell right away that there's a lot of history imbued in this restaurant. We made reservations ahead of time and were seated in the basement/cellar - such a cool atmosphere! For food, we ordered artichoke hearts, garlic shrimp, scrambled eggs, and 2 orders of the suckling pig (for a party of 5). I also tried the gazpacho, which was super refreshing. The suckling pig is their star dish but I actually liked that the least out of everything we tried. The pig was really well cooked, with crispy skin and tender meat, but it lacked flavor. My wife and I were on vacation in Madrid and I had seen this place as the oldest restaurant in the world and their suckling pig on Somebody Feed Phil on Netflix, one of my favorite shows ever. It was cold and rainy this day and we had 3:30 reservations, but we went at one and because of the weather, they let us in early. Our server was fantastic and I ordered a beer. Of course I ordered the suckling pig and my wife got the the Botin Salad. The pig was crispy on the outside and fall of the bone meat on the inside, It was just delicious, my mouth is watering just thinking about it. The salad had a ton of great accouterments. Asparagus, artichoke hearts, ham, lots of stuff. Everything here is top notch! Highly recommended! The rain had stopped when our meal was over. I slipped on a wet grate on the way back to the palace, I didn't pull my hamstring like I did in Minnesota 5 weeks earlier, which was good. Doors opened at 13:00 (1 PM) and my wife and I arrived at 1:30 PM and were seated immediately. Given the popularity and internet discussions on availability we really lucked out and maybe found the best window for you to go...right at opening. As Botin opened in 1725, it was built and modified over the last 300 years without a lot of building codes, so be prepared for atypical stairs, spaces, and seating areas. I absolutely loved how they fully utilized all the space, but you have to be aware as you move around. We were seated in the -1 level from the street and it was a beautiful area with architecturally domed walls of brick. What surprised me was there was even further down (-1.5?) another area for seating and if you wanted to squeeze through a small opening a wine cellar. What a great area to escape the hustle and bustle and heat of the street. Our first waiter didn't speak English but they adapted immediately. Without asking a second waiter appeared and spoke fluent English. I've included their menu. We ordered a 1/2 bottle of wine which was good for 1 glass each for my wife and I. I ordered the suckling pig and my wife ordered the omelette with asparagus. THE PIG WAS PHENOMENAL! The skin was crispy and the meat was tender and well salted. My wife's omelette was better than I would have expected...since it was an omelette : ) The service was very nice. The service is European style (duh...Spain is in Europe) with a very relaxed pace. The reviews were great, and it was being advertised at the OLDEST restaurant in the world, according to the Guinness Book of World Record! I booked our reservations in October for our trip in December, and thank goodness because the restaurant was packed when we ate here! Botin's main dish they recommend is their suckling pig (what they're known for), and without having anything to compare to, I ordered the dish and really enjoyed it. I would say you have to be a little adventurous when eating here because while the flavors are good, they're also exotic in my opinion. The proportion of the dishes are just right, great company, and the ambience certainly takes you back in time. Other than eating at a historic restaurant, would I come back? Probably. But with all the amazing glutinous choices in Madrid, it's not the end of the world if you can't get reservations here. There is a charm/romance/appreciation for dining at the world's oldest running restaurant. It opened in 1725. You can see the expansion from a cellar, living room, and how it overtook the house. The thing that I appreciate is that they didn't change the menu/recipe. If it is not broken, don't fix it. We ordered the Iberian ham, suckling pig and suckling lamb. The pig and lamb were flavourful. I appreciate eating the same recipe that previous generation have eat/customer before me have ate. Came here with my sister, brother-in-law, and niece (who has severe food allergies) this past Tuesday for lunch about 10 minutes after they opened. We came here on a whim, thinking it would be too packed for us (little did we know they opened at 1 p.m.), but since we got there shortly after they opened, we were in luck! The chicken soup was really nice and reminded us of the chicken soup our Chinese grandmother used to make. Bread was great for dipping in the soup and the olive oil and vinegar. The suckling pig was good, not too dry or greasy. Mixed vegetables with jamon on the other hand...let's just say you don't go to Spain for their vegetables. These were too overcooked for our American taste buds. I also had the sangria which was delicious and not too sweet. Service was great. Our server kindly answered all of our questions and our food came out promptly. Ambience is super old world with exposed brick and wood everywhere and tiny staircases.
