I came to his office with a basic cervical cavity. He did not take any X-rays, but instead began drilling right away. It only got worse from there. Dr. Miller did not use novocaine or any anesthetic and quickly began using the "slow drill" directly into my tooth. Furthermore, he was not wearing "optics" (the magnifying glasses) that other dentists use. I was in tremendous pain, and he then filled my tooth with a glass ionomer, rather than the more modern composite filling. It looked awful, because ionomer is just a white cement that isn't matched to the tooth color, unlike composites. Cheap ionomers also need to be replaced more often, as I later found out. That night, my pain became horrible and interrupted my sleep. This continued for weeks. One month later, I visited his office and described my pain. Rather than do anything to alleviate it or take X-rays, Dr. Miller took a cursory glance at it and told me it'd be fine. The pain (sharp, stabbing, throbbing) made it impossible for me to get through the day without aspirin. In desperation, I visited another dentist who described the filling as "loose" and "badly overfilled," and said it needed to be filed down because it was digging into my gum. He also explained how abnormal it was for a dentist not to use X-rays, novocaine, or optics. This second dentist feared that drilling a new filling could result in a root canal. I asked him to file it down and waited, and he prescribed painkillers. The pain in my gum subsided somewhat, but the sharp night pain continued unabated. I visited a third dentist, seeking another opinion as to whether the tooth could be saved. This third dentist repeated many of the same things I'd heard from the second dentist: the filling was loose, and it was highly unusual for a dentist not to use optics, novocaine or X-rays. This third dentist said the only chance at alleviating the pain was to drill again and re-fill the tooth, even with the risks. He substituted a composite filling and did a phenomenal job, and thus far, the tooth has survived and the pain is gone. When he was drilling, this new dentist also remarked at how deeply Dr. Miller had drilled, and how painful that must have been without novocaine. Even writing this review, I practically have PTSD just thinking about those awful weeks of pain and sleepless nights. Normally I would hesitate to write such a negative review about a doctor, but the standard of care I received was inexcusable. Sometimes Yelpers say, "I'm only giving one star because negative stars are not an option." That's exactly how I feel about Dr. Miller.

He has been a great proponent of trying to save any tooth. I recently had an issue with one tooth where I had broken a very old filling. Not to go into the great details, suffice to say he went beyond what any dentist would normally do, including not charging me after a crown did not solve the problem. He was diligent, responsive and compassionate ( Once in the past, he has even offered to miss a flight for his vacation and meet him in his office on a Saturday for a tooth that was causing me discomfort --- as I indicated above, I have "difficult" teeth). As a side note, apparently I am one of those patients who is very difficult to "deaden". He is extremely mindful of this issue and as never caused me pain. I would highly recommend Dr Miller. Her waiting room feels intentionally designed to help lower anxiety, and the office environment is incredibly comforting. As a cancer survivor with a heart valve replacement, my medical history is complex. Dr. Coke was upfront, comforting, and let me know exactly where I stood. She has a rare ability to communicate with an anxious patient without making the anxiety worse. She honestly advised me that she believes my case requires hospital-level medical coordination, and explained that she no longer performs procedures requiring that level of hospital integration. Unlike another local oral surgeon who completely ghosted me and left me in limbo, her honesty was a breath of fresh air. When I needed my records sent last-minute for an upcoming appointment with a hospital surgeon, her staff was incredibly happy to help. We prepaid their annual in house plan for our 3 children (7, 4, 2) - $150/child for a total of $450. The in house plan was supposed to cover 2 exams, 2 cleanings and x-rays for the year. Unfortunately, our visit didn't go well. The office apparently isn't equipped with an x-ray device small enough for children's mouths. The technician accidentally hurt the inside of my 7 year old's mouth while attempting to get the x rays. This unfortunately upset him and the tech prepared a topical numbing agent for his cleaning (this seemed crazy to me as I have never hear of using a topical to make a cleaning "more comfortable" as she described it). I was very surprised this was prepared without asking me if it was ok. Maybe they would have asked prior to applying it, but it was locked and loaded so to speak. The dentist then explained that he had 3 cavities to be filled (in front of him) which caused him to get even more upset. I had him calmed down and she mentioned referring us to an orthodontist where they can determine if he needs braces. This sent him in to a crying freak out. Upon which she suggested we wait to do his cleaning until he's under nitros with his cavity filling. We scheduled the next appointment and they said they'd contact me with pricing to fill the cavities. This kiddo has seen a dentist twice a year since he was 3 years old and has NEVER even been nervous. They were unable to x-ray my 4 year old because "her mouth was too small" for their equipment however she did receive her cleaning. My 2 year old received a cleaning and no x rays due to his age. I asked the desk clerk what the plan would be moving forward regarding getting x rays for my 4 year old and my very soon to be 3 year old for his next visit. She said she would speak to the dentist about maybe ordering a smaller device. After discussing the experience with my husband we decided this was not a good fit for our kids. My husband called and left a message to discuss canceling our appointment and requested a partial refund for the services paid for and not rendered (since we wouldn't be returning for our 2nd set of semi-annual check-ups). The next communication was to call me with a voicemail telling me the price of the cavity filling procedure, making no mention of the message my husband left. He called once again and left a message. The office staff attempted to reach him but he didn't answer so she called me. This is long so I'll summarize: they told us we were due zero refund since, had we not done the in house plan, our services would have been more than what we had paid for the year a la carte. She even sent me a link to a website to "educate me on fair pricing for dentistry." I did not expect a full refund. I would have been satisfied with any effort to refund a portion of the prepaid services. Considering we received less than 1/2 the services promised to no fault of our own, I was shocked they have refused to refund any of our money. They only offered to conduct the cleaning when I come back, however there was absolutely no was I was taking my son back. He was TERRIFIED. I chose to take my son elsewhere for his cleaning (of which I had to pay for again) and was told he only needed 2 fillings and no need to consult an orthodontist at this point. He was so scared from his prior experience, he couldn't stop crying. Again, he has never shed a tear in a dentist's office. Thankfully we chose a SPECTACULAR pediatric dentist and he was able to completely turn it around and my son was all smiles when he got his fillings done. I would not recommend this office for children or anyone else for that matter due to their business practices.
