This quaint restaurant was very small and on one of the side streets away from all the hustle and bustle of the touristy waterfront places. We had four people and had to split up 2 and 2 to fit, which was not a problem at all. The wait staff was very attentive and helpful despite there being a very small room to operate. I got the house special, which was white pasta with pork served in a cabbage leaf and it was excellent. My girlfriend got the mushroom risotto and it was a little undercooked but still delicious. Okay... we've dined all over Italy and were hesitant about a previous review. So we decided to give it a go. Made a reservation the day before and were welcomed like we were coming home. Dick and the staff were amazing for my wife, daughter, and yes, my granddaughter. For mains, we ordered the steak, risotto and the pork tenderloin. The steak was cooked exactly per our request...the risotto was perfection with porcini mushrooms and I loved the pork tenderloin. Service was always checking in with us to be certain everything was to our liking. The Chef did a wonderful job for our family. Thank you talented lady!! Great spot tucked back away from the water. No views but better food. The mixed lake appetizer was fun. Lightly pickled fish, a pate and a whole smoked fish (complete with gaping Billy Bass mouth). This tiny little place in Varenna, tucked away in the narrow rustic streets, waiting to get discovered. Simply true homemade cooking. Must I say, my wife and I enjoyed one of the best dinner dates in our fifteen years together. The flavors are beyond amazing, the experience so wonderful... We started with the Antipasto misto del lago, it is lake fish served three ways, was very tasty and fresh, so many different flavors packed in one dish..followed with the Zuppa di pesce which was one of the best seafood soups I've tasted in my life, its contents so tender and with the perfect spice, simply AMAZING.. My main course was the Filetto al pepe verde, meat was juicy and perfectly cooked medium rare, had a nice sauce with small peppers, melts as you begin to chew...She had the Filetti di lavarello (grilled lake fish) was perfectly seasoned, was cooked to perfection, great tasting fish. We shared a side of rosemary potatoes, and Wow, even these were out of this world. Finished off with some Grappa and Limoncello...Memorable meal in this beautiful small village by the lake. The value of the food was worth so much more than what we paid. Service was attentive and courteous. They were playing some nice soul music, very relaxing atmosphere. We had read good reviews on this restaurant, though we wanted lake front we decided to try this quaint little restaurant. Very happy, our lunch was so good. We both started with a starter, I had the most delicious, eggplant, zucchini, mozzarella, dish in a delicious sauce. Was a perfect starter. My husband had the pasta with clams, he loved it. My main was pasta with shrimp, wow, was perfectly prepared. My husband had the pork chop in a porcini mushroom sauce, was really good. We shared a nice bottle of white wine, just a nice lunch. The couple that own this gem are very friendly and accommodating, I would definitely frequent this spot if I lived near. read more

I loved this restaurant in Varenna. It was a perfect example of delicious, fresh, homemade Italian food. They were opened on Christmas Eve, we arrived to eat a little early by Italian standards (6pm) but they were ready to feed us! We ordered the tagliere platter (cold cuts and cheese) and in the middle was the most delicious polenta I've ever eaten in my life. The wine by the glass was from a freshly opened bottle. For our main course, we ordered the special trio of pastas that you must order for a minimum of 2 people. I normally don't like to order the same dish as my husband but I'm glad I broke my own rules. One was a pasta dish, one was a risotto and one was a crepe with a spicy sauce. It was simply delicious, every bite was better than the last bite. The kitchen is behind a glass wall and you could see the chef making the food with precision and passion. I didn't think I had room for dessert but when our server described them, somehow my stomach expanded to make some more room for the house made desserts. The prices were extremely reasonable. I would have happily paid twice as much for the quality and amount of food I ate, and the service was exceptional. Of note, this restaurant only has a handful of tables inside. We just had an incredible lunch. They had an appetizer with garlic calamari, fish soup and a salad with shrimp. The most delicious appetizer we have ever experienced. My wife tried the calamari for the first time and fell in love. Main course was pork escallops in a mushroom sauce . Off the charts. We are coming back next week for dinner. read more

We came here on our last night in Italy and are so glad we did! This is a tiny restaurant (4-5 tables?) on an inner street of Varenna. We had debated for a while whether or not to sit by the water and watch the sunset, but had heard that those restaurants were generally "tourist traps" with average food. We came here and asked if they were ok with us stepping out briefly at sunset to take some photos and they were more than accomodating. I ordered the beef carpaccio as a starter, and the House special pasta as my main. The starter was good - basically cured meats with arugula - but it was the pasta that really blew me away. They don't list out any of the ingredients in the menu, but they do use red wine, pork, and red cabbage in it. In any case it was delicious and my favorite dish of the night! They have a decent selection of wines, all very affordable. Europe is SO affordable when it comes to wine...for reference we got a 50 euro bottle of Amarone here, and a few weeks later we were back in the US and ordered a similar bottle of Amarone for ~100 USD at a nice, but not overly fancy restaurant. I will absolutely come back here if I find myself in Como again. read more

Amazing dinner. The restaurant is small, but feels intimate and inviting. The service was wonderful and the food was delicious! We had some of the specials, spaghetti with seafood and ravioli with local mushrooms, then tiramisu for dessert. It really was incredible. The wait staff were incredibly nice and having been in typical French restaurants in France, coming to this place was a breath of fresh air. I was smelling the gardenias they had growing in pots outside the place and the waitress was ready to cut them for me, in France they would have said, please dont touch the flowers! While in Varenna we were looking g for a place to eat. We stopped at one place but there were no seats available. We passed by Borgovino and it was not crowded so we skeptical and kept going. So, what happened here? Have enjoyed many meals in this small restaurant. Always excellent. Today,however, ordered usual salad and their special pasta. It was special in that served in raddicio leaf there was little there and very innocous. Light purple,dry and mysterious. Salad was a handful which was alright as the greens were fine, but the tomatoes.. lining the dish were way past prime. Bread and wine were very good. Ambience also nice and kitchen quiet. 35 euro with 2 wine, but not worth wasting a meal in Italy. Plates on next table were also skimpy...one prawn on a few spoons of pasta. read more

We had a wonderful evening at Borgovino. The service is friendly and attentive and the waiter speaks fluent English. The food is excellent all-around. We had the eggplant parmigiana as a first even though we're not huge eggplant fans. If all eggplant parmigiana was this good we would become big fans. Outstanding flavors. I had the pork scallopines with porcini mushrooms which was tender and juicy and my wife had the gnocchis which she claimed to be the lightest and fluffy gnocchis she'd ever had. I've never written an online review before, but had to post this as this was one of the worst dining experiences of my life. My boyfriend and I came here because Il Cavatappi was closing and Borgovino was the closest option. Upon walking in, the waiter was extremely rude to us because we had an empty cup from a nearby gelato shop that we needed to throw away. He grabbed it from us and was dismissive of us our entire visit. An older man, presumably the owner, was even worse and when we asked for recommendations, he seemed annoyed that we asked and just read right off the menu. As if that wasn't bad enough, the food was inedible. We literally left entire plates of food because it was so horrendous. We ordered the house special, which consisted of over cooked noodles and fatty, boiled bacon, splashed together with a pungent red wine sauce. The gnocchi was, to put it kindly, under seasoned. I've had gnocchi many times in Italy and this doesn't texturally compare. It was grainy and tasted like raw potatoes. The gnocchi was supposed to come in a Gorgonzola sauce, but there was no cheese to be seen. From end to end, the worst food and ambience I've ever experienced in a restaurant. Quite frankly, it sucked. To make matters worse, the bill had a cover charge for each individual, totaling 12 euros. When the owner came by to pick up our plates, he was overtly angered that we didn't eat the majority of our entrees and stormed off. I urge anyone visiting Varenna to avoid this establishment. I recommend visiting one of the many restaurants in the village. Alternatively, you could go home and eat leftover airline snacks like we had to. read more

5 stars! The restaurant is a very small room off on of the many quaint streets in Varenna. Despite being small the food was excellent and it was easy to find something gluten free on the menu especially because the waiter spoke at least three different languages, at least while I was there, one of them being English. The wine was amazing and the food was delicious. Thy even make their own pasta! It was a bit on the expensive side, but definitely worth it. I would highly recommend going here but make sure to get a reservation or you probably won't get a table! Definitely don't feel like you have to order all the parts of the meal. It was our first night in Italy and we made that mistake, portions aren't as small as at other restaurants! Highly recommend! read more
