The good is the nostalgia of the border store, but it's not what it used to be. But it has the essentials.

I stop in here a few times a year and never felt compelled to leave a review 'til now because it appears they're replacing a large swath of their kitch and tchotch offerings for slot machines, more slot machines, and other gambling games of "skill" both on a small and large scale (ex: they gutted a whole fridge section that once sold local NC sausages 'n such to construct a whole new room that appears to have been solely created to house an air hockey-sized tabletop multiplayer cash game). If plugging your income into a money-sucking timewarp is your thrill, no judgement here--may fortune favor your fancy. But since browsing and sometimes caving into impulse purchasing local food products, sand toys for the toddler, drinkware I don't need, or yet another beachy puzzle when I grab moar snax for the road is how I like to get my kicks, I feel compelled to criticize the renovations in progress on both sides of the Border Station as it's looking more and more like Gamblor's Roadside Sit 'n Spend and less like anything I'm interested in, and that includes their restrooms (less often reliably clean or, in some instances, not accessible at all). All that said, I'll probably pop in again just to see how the reno shakes out and whether or not my craptastic expectations (for better or for worse) are shaped and skewed by the wild winds of the capitalist hellscape we live in. This pit stop has everything: gas, clean restrooms, the largest selection of beverages and snacks I've ever seen, a snack bar, hand dipped ice cream, lotto (VA and NC since this building is situated right on top of the border--hence the name), OBX merch and souvenirs, take-home barbeque, and lots of regional products. What's a regional product, you ask? They have Stuckey's products, McCutcheons jams and such, and Wells barbeque sauce, a staple in my house. We buy two jugs to last us a year between trips to the Outer Banks, can't can't can't live without it! They have teeny tiny 18oz. bottles for the babies, and one gallon jugs for the adults, take yer pick. Basically The Border Station is the best pit stop on the East Coast, my oasis on my way to or from the OBX. read more

I've been stopping in here each time we pass through since I was a kid. The only thing that's changed is the interior layout. My husband and I stop a lot while taking a motorcycle ride. You can just hang out and have a seat out front for a little while. It's not really a touristy thing, even though a lot of tourist take a break from the Va to OBX drive. They have NC cigarette prices, which is why they're so popular. And they sell a decent selection of cigars. They have a few gaming machines. Cold drinks. An entire little cafeteria style BBQ place, that was really good the last time I ate there. There's a gas station. A lot of touristy items, and some decor. They have clean bathrooms, always a plus! The staff has always been friendly and helpful. Staff's always been really nice. read more

I feel like the primary reason for the existence of this place is gas and clean bathrooms. The gas is priced right in line with the area and the gas pumps are easy to navigate, but the bathrooms are kind of gross. The state rest areas are much cleaner. I feel bad giving the Border Station one star, but you will see that it was deserved in the details below. Having said that, I will still be making a stop there on my trips to and from the OBX. I absolutely LOVE their business concept. By straddling the border, they can offer the best of both states in one location, and shoppers can vote with their feet when paying sales tax or buying contraband. I will echo the positive comments of other reviews regarding the easy access gas pumps, commodious bathrooms (albeit with graffitti), and numerous shopping options. There is an eclectic variety of goods available, and I did spot some computers that appeared to be running slot machines or some such gambling opportunity. The reason I was disappointed was the restaurant that purports to sell seafood (NOT the Dairy Queen). Our party included 6 people, and we all ordered at the same time. Unfortunately, three of us had to wait quite a long time, I would estimate 20-30 minutes. The worst part was the deviled crab. They are supposed to be moist and tender, but these things were tough and chewy. My wife flat out refused to eat hers, and I choked mine down with regrets. Now I do have to say that the manager was VERY apologetic about the delay. He deserved 5 stars for being concerned about the situation, but unfortunately his boss didn't back him up with all the systems necessary to deliver success on a regular basis. I have no complaints about the people who were working there, but the management can do better. read more

It's a hard-knock life for us searching for fireworks in Virginia - that's for sure! But this gas station right near the NC Border is exactly what you need! They have a good selection of legal fireworks for VA including kid friendly things like snakes, smoke bombs, sparklers and snappers as well as a variety of fountain style fireworks for some pretty night-time Fourth of July partying. They have a tent outside that sells cash only with a bit of a bigger selection than inside - but you can pay inside with a credit card. Prices were basically the same on all of the items. It's a haul, but it's also the closest place I could find to Hampton Roads to buy fireworks that's not north of Richmond. read more

ROAD TRIP!!!!!!!!! The Border Station is a great stop on your way South. Just five minutes from the Chesapeake Expressway Toll, you can easily pull off and fill up on all the food and fuel you need for an amazing road trip. The shop offers all kinds of local specialties as well as Stucky's goodies and your typical junk food fare. I'm really digging on the Outer Banks Kettle Corn at the moment. It's addictive. This place is so random sometimes. Last time I went in, they had a bunch of local sweet potatoes for sale at the entrance. Hey, not the best for car munching, but why not pick some of that up for your destination? The gas prices are usually competitive and there are nice, clean bathrooms. Plenty of tacky sea shell souvenirs too. But I think the best souvenirs and gifts are the local food specialties like hot sauces, peanuts and country store items. read more

Nothing fancy here. In fact, it's a little bit dumpy and downtrodden looking so I really hesitated when everyone in our little party said let's get the burger and fries. Somewhat comforted by the fact that two very nice older ladies were manning the kitchen, I decided to take off my judges robe and give the place a chance. (potential) Germs be damned. And you know what? The food was delicious. The burgers were great and the BBQ even better. Super reasonably priced. I came here with my 3 and a half year old for a quick dinner. I initially wanted a wing meal but they told me they do not have one. So, I chose the bbq combo with a side of french fries. My son wanted a hot dog with french fries, unfortunately they had no hot dog kids meal. I had to purchase a single hot dog (it was Nathan's) for $3 and just shared my fries with my son. Nothing says country like this rest stop and I love it! Not only can you get petrol, relieve yourself, and grab a tasty beverage with your fireworks but you can also gamble! There are quarter slots where if you score, you can win more quarters! They also have tons of fishing gear and randoms that make this store rock. From a ham sandwich to fireworks, it's like a flea market but you get brand new gear. Located at the North Carolina/Virginia border. Sonic is close by too! read more

I have been eating their barbeques a long time and enjoyed them. Today, however, is my LAST time! There was so little meat on the sandwich and what was there was primarily grease!!! This is a problem I have never experienced in the past. Eliminating the grease would be #1 to remedy this--secondly, either reduce the size of the very large bun or add more barbeque to at least cover the bread! Came here because we've passed it a bunch of times and thought why not? Bought some gas and decided to wait out a bad storm, so we used the restroom (Can somebody say "Stinky"?!?!?!?!) and bought a Dipped Cone. The Dipped Cone (medium) was a mistake. From a distance, it really looked like a small. Up close, it looked like the soft-serve ice cream wasn't quite ready and the thinned-out coating of chocolate was dripping down the cone (but did indeed make a theoretical shell). There were a slew of lottery players and cigarette carton purchasers, which seemed to be the normal crowd here. So... one star off for a bad bathroom, and one star off for having a pathetic Dipped Cone. read more

(10/4/2015) If you're heading to the Outer Banks from the north, it's the first outlet you get to at the VA-NC state line. Probably you are giddy to be almost at the end of your road trip and want cheap smokes. This is not the cheapest place, and they apparently (bewilderingly for a cig outlet) run out of your brand of smokes. Place is full of tchotchkes and basic, expensive tourist crap. Stopped here for a restroom stop and some snacks and decided to get a pulled pork sandwich, which was, hands down, best bbq sauce I've ever had. I wish I could give this place 2.5 stars. .5 stars for the food/setting/cleanliness and 2 for variety. I personally have only had breakfast there... but it kind of reminds you of a truck stop. They actually have a manual dispenser for plastic utensils... for everyone to use. So your utensils are only as clean as the several hundred people that touched the dispenser prior to you. The gas is more expensive on the North Carolina side then the Virginia side. You can get cheaper gas if you go down an extra 10 miles into Virginia. If you are visiting the Outer Banks and you forgot to get a trinket, you will find one here. The prices range from cheap too overpriced. I have no complaints about the people who work there. They seemed very nice and friendly. BTW- Just a heads up they have a quarter machine, but you do not win quarters you...you win .25 discounts. Unless you plan on going back there for shopping do not waste your money. read more

I am only writing a review on the Boarder Station because I cannot find where Mister Jim's on the Boarder is located. We order from Mister Jim's 4 days ago. Spent about $60 with a delivery charge and a tip. I placed the order at 7:05pm and the arrival time according the my email confirmation was 7:50pm. We did not get our cold food until 8:50pm. When the food arrived, the manager Joshua pretty much threw the food at my husband and dashed to his car as it was raining. I informed my husband that we paid $2.99 a piece for 2 , 2 liters which NEVER arrived. My husband tells Joshua and he says he will take care of it. In the meantime, he checks our food and it is dry and cold. He calls up to Mister Jim's and speaks with a girl who has a, I don't give a ____ attitude. She tells him she can't refund him and the manager was the one out making deliveries so he couldn't refund us either. She also informs him that the sodas we ordered we never going to make it to us. So, my husband then says he is leaving his name and number and wants a call back from Joshua. We receive a call about 10 mins later from the manager. He was pretty argumentative as well and he stated that he was NEVER going to bring the sodas (so why would you say you would be right back, makes no sense) and that he would refund our whole bill. We have yet to receive the refund. He said it would take 3/5 days. We were not impressed with the food here. Like stated above, it was very dry and extremely cold. read more

Before it changed hands this place was even better. I always eat the food there. They have a decent breakfast. Wednesday is buy one get one barbecue sandwiches. They have a lot of tchotchkes and a head shop. Lots of things to see and different tourists there from all over. Decided to make this stop during our drive from Virginia Beach to Outer Banks and we are very happy we did. We had the 2.99 breakfast special and it was outstanding! The eggs and potatoes were very well seasoned and the toast was more appealing than most - bacon was blah though. The staff was extremely friendly and informative about attractions in the area. They are fully stocked on some of the most random souvenirs you can find. It was also great too see how unique a place can be when it's split between two states. Living near the border of North Carolina has its advantages: cheap cigarettes and access to cheap and illegal (in Virginia) fireworks. The Border Station celebrates these benefits and more in a unique one-stop-shop store. Half of the store is in Virginia and the other half is in North Carolina, so it's a cool landmark. With a little corner market, a Dairy Queen and Zeroes subs, it's a great place to stop on your way home from a road trip or to make your own quick road trip into the country for a few hours. You would never believe how much farmland is in Virginia Beach until you make this drive. It's a scenic route, so bring some good friends, some good music and a few bucks to get your 4th of July (or other celebration) off with a bang. read more

Whom ever is in charge of cooking these, doesn't know what they are doing. Whole leaves with cigar sized stems. No chopping and not a lick of seasoning. And they haven't gotten any cheaper. Border Station is a convenience store that straddles the Virginia/North Carolina state line. I originally stopped in the parking lot to park and take a picture with the "Welcome to North Carolina" sign, but decided to go inside. You will find the regular convenience store fare (candy, drinks, snacks, jerky) with a nice helping of local/regional items (nuts, fudge, sauces). Inside the store, a large tile line denotes the state line, so you can jump back and forth between states. read more

This place has the cheapest gas for miles. The state border runs straight through the store and cuts it in half, so you can buy Virginia lotto at one cashier and then cross the invisible divide to the NC side of the store to buy your smokes at NC prices.
