I found myself at Books and Greetings for a book signing/meet and greet. I do not typically read for pleasure, but I enjoy browsing bookstores and do buy books that I find interesting (which then sit on my shelf for aesthetics sake). Anyway, this particular book signing was with Cody Rigsby who is one of the more well-known Peloton instructors. Since my friend and I are fans, we thought it would be fun to attend, so off we went. B&G is located in Northvale, like a stone's throw from the NY/NJ border - seriously I think we cross the border and like less than a minute later we were there. The bookstore is located in a strip mall so there's ample parking Speaking of the bookstore itself, it looks like they have a really good selection and was giving off typical bookstore vibes. It was a little hard to maneuver around the store but I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt since things may have been rearranged for the signing. I'm curious to know who is involved with this bookstore as they seem to have an in with celebs - reading through the other reviews, they host a *lot* of book signings with pretty well known people. I didn't expect that from a relatively unknown bookstore (at least to the masses) in a Jersey suburb. Anyway, once we arrived they had a table set up outside to check in - we had to purchase tickets in advance which came with a book so after they found our names we got our books. They were calling in groups of people at a time and after a couple of minutes we were led to a queue inside. Before I knew it, I was taking a pic with Cody and then was back outside - it was really fast but I think they sold over 1300 tickets so there was no time to dilly dally (in case you're wondering, the book was pre-signed). Everyone was really friendly, and I applaud B&G for organizing a very efficient meet and greet; you can tell they've done this before, and from my perspective everything was super streamlined. This is a little bit of a hike for me to get to, but I wouldn't be against returning for another meet and greet or just to browse if I was in the area again. read more

I highly recommend Books and Greetings! I traveled from the DC area to this store last night for a book signing for Cassandra Peterson aka Elvira, and I couldn't be more happy that I did. The event was well-organized, and the staff were all helpful, friendly and personable. I called ahead a few times to get details on the event and they were always providing top notch service. Upon arrival, I advised them I was the one that called ahead and the store clerk as well as the owner immediately remembered, and accommodated me for the signing. This is a review about the book signing with Matthew Gray Gubler on Saturday, Sept 30, 2023. This event was a complete disaster. The event was listed as being 3 hours on the eventbrite ticketing page. My number was in the very beginning of the 300s. I called the bookstore that morning to see what time to arrive, they said be there by 5:30-6. We got there and found parking before 5, we saw him pull in the green car and walk into the building, right around 5ish. We didn't realize at this point they had sold 950+ tickets. By 7pm we realized this was not happening they way they claimed it would. We sat at Starbucks for hours , until around 8pm, when they were only on number 110, then we walked to the diner down the street to eat. The diner was full of pissed off people, some with numbers in 700-900 range. We ate then called back the bookstore around 8:45ish and they were only on 120. It was taking them an hour to do less than 20 people. By the time we walked back to the parking lot they were calling 150, which honestly seemed like they were just calling people in to make it look like it was moving faster than it was. By the time we left they had just called 170, which was close to 9:45ish. At that point we figured being 310ish we weren't getting in til around 2am and that was in no way what we had signed up for. We received a refund from the bookstore and left - a refund was not offered we had to basically argue for it. At this point we had seen peoples instagram posts from inside saying they had a 15 minute conversation with him and other people has full photo shoots and dance parties. We were not happy. We had an hour drive home and called the bookstore once we got home, just curious to see how many people had gotten thru the line. They were only at 190. The bookstore told us on phone he has comepletely taken over control of the event and they had no say in what was happening. Obviously this is only partially true bc they saw the writing on the wall in the early evening and could've handled it then, but chose not to. We continued to call all night, because at this point it was honestly unbelievable. Around 2am they were at 230, so had we stayed there was no way we would have gotten in before sunrise. At this point we also saw on Instagram that #810 had gotten in... so it is ridiculous that the bookstore wasn't enforcing the numbers very strongly. This is 100% their fault, yet it was such poorly run event I can't say I'm surprised. The following morning we called again around 6:30am ... they said they still had approx 150ish numbers to call but had no idea how many people were actually left bc they didn't know how many earlier numbers were going to show back up. We ended up calling for the last time around 1pm the following day and they said it has just "recently ended". Not sure what time it did exactly. The bookstore was adamant that this is not how these events ever run. They claim they can usually get 1000 thru in 2-3 hours, which still seems borderline impossible BUT I do believe that the store did not expect this (altho still their fault bc they could have handled this completely differently). They have events with a lot of celebrities and if this is how it always goes down, they shouldn't be in business anymore. I personally feel Matthew Gray Gubler also is at fault because he knew 950+ people were waiting outside and continued to just carry on like he had all the time in the world. There was zero percent chance I was going to sit there for almost 20 hours waiting to meet him, that is absurd and quite rude of him and the bookstore to even think people SHOULD do that. We personally expected to walk in get the book signed and get a quick hello and picture, maybe a minute interaction at most. To then come home and see other people's videos what went down inside was disgusting. They took zero consideration for the fans who were somehow expected to wait all night to meet him. To say this was poorly run and a disaster is putting it lightly. I see lots of people saying on social media he was so nice to wait all night, but the truth is NO ONE shouldve been expected to wait all night into the next afternoon and the bookstore shouldn't have allowed it. I would also like to add the staff of the bookstore was quite rude - in the beginning of the event before things went off the rails they made an announcement to call the store to see what place in line they are at. Then they proceeded to act annoyed when people called to see. What did they expect? Towards the beginning of the night we were also told the line would probably start moving faster bc people would get fed up and go home ... so maybe they did expect this? I don't know. Either way they were the ones who were in the position to make this event run smoothly and they failed completely. I would NEVER come to another event here and would strongly urge others to do the same, unless of course you feel like sleeping in a parking lot. read more

Fantastic place. Even though it's a little out of the way for me, I've made my way over there a few times over the years for their celebrity book signings. They've gotten a few major but interesting stars there. The last time I was there was for actor Rainn Wilson best known from The Office. There were hundreds of people there and it was organized so well that we were still able to get a photo with Wilson, there was time for each person. You got a number in line based on when you called in and got your book. I managed to be in the 70s since I ordered my book right when I learned about the signing. I got there early anyway but they called out what numbers were next in line and you queued up when you were about to go in. I've also met Sally Field, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Steve Guttenberg, Larry King and Louis Gossett Jr there over the years. Keep it up and I'll be back! read more

I came in to pick up my ticket for the Neil Patrick Harris' signing, which was pretty painless. Then I came back the night of the event, there was a huge line. The parking lot was full. However, turns out, it doesn't matter where you are in line, they were calling you up based on your ticket number. So, off to Starbucks I went for a bit. When I came back out, we still had some waiting to do. Also, instead of you telling NPH your name, they gave you a post it note where the girl wrote my name wrong (and I had to fix it - NPH and I had a good laugh about it). On line, I met some not so nice girls (blargh). Then finally, when you were in the bookstore and they called your number, there were a lot of rules about where you can take a picture and up to one point. Some employees were pretty nice -- some not so much -- but obviously it may be because they were exhausted. All in all, it was alright. If the Author is doing a book signing event you can buy the book online and you will be given a number. On the date of the book signing you go in and you'll see what number they are at. They call you in groups of 10. Say you have number 235 and they just called numbers 70 to 80 you know you have a bit of a wait...go next door for a drink or an appetizer so you won't be cranky like the reviewer above. Thoroughly impressed with this lovely and friendly retail store located over the New York State border in Northvale, New Jersey. Books and Greetings is merchandised beautifully with not just books but winter accessories including gloves and scarves for women, gorgeous slippers, house decorations, and adorable baby clothing. There are toys for children, holiday cookies and tins and a card section that is a store in itself. The owner not only greeted me but took the time to chat with me as well. This store is such a gem and asset to our community. I hope realtors bring prospective buyers into the store as it reminds me of books stores i got lost in when I lived in the city. Zach who works there clearly loves books and can speak to so many of them. I went in looking for Christmas gifts for my parents who are voracious readers and he was a huge help. I think it is a couple who own the store and they are always very helpful. They work very hard and bring many interesting authors to the area and authors of diverse political perspectives and all different genres of writing. I have heard disabled veterans speak about their childrens book, Whoopi Goldberg, Former NYPD Police Commissioner Ray Kelly and Joel Osteen speak there. It is an intimate space which adds to its charm. Whenever I need a last minute gift, they are my go-to spot. I read Sad Simon from San Fran's review giving them one star. Go west young man, go west. Those of us rooted here are beyond grateful to have a place such as Books & Greetings. They are they type of store and people who are the backbone of this country. read more

I usually stop in and buy random things at the store anywhere from cards to stuffed animals to books. Normally I don't have an issue with anyone at the store but today I stopped in briefly to ask for a job application and the woman working at the time was extremely rude and refused to give me an application. I've heard other locals talk about how rude the staff can be and didn't believe it until now. I even went in the other day and bought a book for my nephews and since it was a holiday themed book, the man gave me the 50% after Christmas discount, even though they weren't part of the sale. I love this book store. To be honest, the majority of the items I get are not books, but more like gifts. I do like their toy selection too, as well as their cards (they have cards you cannot find anywhere else). I've never had a problem with customer service, as they are always willing to help me when I go in there. My one issue though is that the prices are pretty high. I don't think they are as friendly as everyone makes them out to be. I went there and they were ready to close and there still was 10 minutes till closing and they basically forced me out. I was trying to find what to buy with my store credit, being that they never gave me money back on a purchase I made and would only give me store credit. I went one time and the women behind the desk was extremely rude looked at me like I had five heads when I asked if she could help me find a book, which made me feel so uncomfortable I just left. Months later I go back to see if they had any calendars and I walk up to the store in the pouring rain with two people standing on the inside looking out the same glass door I was clearly walking up to and I tired to open the door. It was locked and one of the employees then walked up to the door waving their hands in my face screaming CLOSED. It was only 6pm and all their lights were on. So rude!
