Owner/worker there is very rude. I read books. I know how to carefully look at books. I am so respectful of the books that I don't touch them unless I am interested in it. The guy literally saw me carefully let the book slide out of the sleeve and the guy gave me a lecture on how to do it properly, which is the way I did it, and what not to do. At one point, I had my phone out to see what books I am still looking for and which ones I have and the guy said that I need to put my phone away and use two hands to look at books. I wasn't even touching any books!! I thought this customer service was terrible. I don't need to be lectured how to look at a book when I'm not even touching any of them after he gave me the proper way to take a book out of its sleeve, which I did correctly. Also, the book price on the sleeved book is not the same as what the sign said on top. The sign was more and he said that no prices are written on the books with a book sleeve, which was a complete lie. read more

Howard prices his books so low that it frustrates him when people try to haggle. Although he did once give a price break to an attractive young woman in line ahead of me... on you go, son. I've picked up a ton of great modern firsts there, all of them below market value. It's depressing that the store is almost always empty when I go there. That's the way it is for now, I guess, until the general public believes once again in learning. All in all, this is one of the best used bookstores in the country, not just in NJ. The stock doesn't rotate a great deal, but there are gems to be found everywhere. He's a kind, older gentleman, only takes cash, very knowledgable and accommodating. The old man who runs the store is no more than a Saint, and Socrates in his prime. The store is controlled chaos, and one of a kind! The books are scattered in unique fashion, and the prices are so fair you scratch your head due to how lucky your are when you find a diamond in the rough. The book I was looking for turned out not to have been published yet, so I can't find fault with the owner...who, from the looks of the place, has every other book in existence. I love, love, love this place! When you enter the store, it feels like you've been transported to a different time, world and era. Thousands of books ranging from vintage (1800s) to Stephen King. Owner is a nice guy with a lot of knowledge and stories to share. I got a handful of $1 paperbacks from here. Very good deal and tons of options to choose from. Please please please please buy books here! This is the kind of enchanting little bookshop that you dream of. Unfortunately a lot of these places are losing the war to Amazon/Barnes and Noble/etc and they're disappearing by the minute! I really love this place and I would be heartbroken if it was another casualty. Why is this place so great? It's cozy, overflowing with books and lots of fascinating trinkets and antiques. There are lots of 1950s and 60s editions of books here. If you're a lover of mid-century design this place is a treasure trove. It really feels like a curated collection--lots of fascinating stuff, and everything is generally in good to great condition, and best of all, reasonably priced! There's a huge section of dollar paperbacks and lots of collectible books, including a ton of gorgeous Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew hardcovers. And even in the section of gorgeous, embossed classic editions, hardly anything is priced over $10. There is even a cozy sitting area near the checkout desk for reading, playing chess, and checking out some of the rare books and antiques. I've heard some complaints about the grouchiness of the owner, but I definitely disagree. He is a little aloof at times, but is always helpful and willing to chat about books. I think the personality of book and record shop owners is pretty universal, gruff but generally kind and interesting beneath the surface. He does however maintain a strict policy of not carrying around stacks of books (a precarious operation in the maze-like stacks), so once you acquire a few he will store them at his desk while you browse. In conclusion--this is a wonderful bookshop, the kind that one day will only exist in English novels and wistful memories. After an afternoon milling about the stacks, inhaling that glorious old book smell and discovering long-lost childhood books and first editions of favorite novels...you'll be so pleased you visited. read more

Simply the best thing since sliced bread. The Last great bookstore in Bergen county. If Amazon is a computerized bookstore then this is a manual book store of the highest order. The words original book store come to mind. Every visit is a trip down memory lane. He has antique spinning tops, books on Kemet (Ancient Egypt), my favorite subject, that are rear and unfindable. Their are all manor of things you have not seen in decades and somethings you have never seen before. The owner Howard is the most knowlagable person on books I know. A nice guy, honest as the day is long and a great teacher/lovers of chess. Then their is my favorite spot in the store were u can sit across from Howard's chess board and talk to him and the patrons that wonder in and are browsing. Howard knows a lot about some things but has an opinion on Everything. Lol One day I came to the store with my grandson. After he got over the fact that this was not a library Howard taught him how to play chess in short order. This is a magical shop. The only downside is that when you first make your way in, past the cavernous shelves, through the maze to the central reading area, you may be concerned that you've entered one of many horror movies that end with some spooky shop owner trading your soul for a book of spells. Fortunately, the owner is just a friendly, wise, knowledgable man with infinite patience and a passion for what he does. You can get lost in this store for hours. You can come with a friend a play chess. You can come alone and challenge the owner to chess. You can come with a kid and blow his mind with the books and games. Just watch after them. Copiously stocked, knowledgeable owner, one of the only remaining brick & mortar Antiquarian Used Book Stores left in this neck of the woods, and plenty of parking. It's a labor of love. What more could you ask? Sure, you could order a book online, but where's the fun in that? At Brier Rose, you could easily spend a couple of hours just poking around, finding the book you want, and some impulse buys too. ;) The bottom line, if you're truly a book lover, this store's worth the trip!!! Paradise for book lovers, and conveniently located in northern NJ, with ample parking (Municipal parking across the street). Tons of interesting books, new and especially older ones, on every subject imaginable, in excellent and new condition. Most conventional book stores do not have older books, certainly not with this kind of inventory. Libraries are even giving away older books due to limited shelf space. So, this store is a treasure trove. The "search engine" here is your eyes. My interest is history and there is a myriad of books on different areas of history. Prices are very reasonable and no shipping costs! The owner is a bit of a character but it's his store with his rules, such as handling the books carefully. I found him to be a nice guy and he is very knowledgeable and helpful in pointing you in the right direction. If you love books, you will love this book store. My 7th grader had a project for a language arts class to visit a large book retailer and a brick and mortar bookstore and conduct an interview. Not only did Mr. Rose happily take the time to answer the questions my son had, he spent time elaborating on the answers, allowing my son to record the interview and my son left not only with his answers, but he had the opportunity to meet a man passionate about books and learning and in sharing it with my son, my son saw a new perspective on reading.
