Looking for an alternative to the coffee shop chain that's pretty much in every corner? Look no further. They offer seasonal drinks, teas, a few bakery bites, free wifi, and a massive seating area. The perfect place to cozy up with a new book and a treat from a café.

I have visited this particular Books a Million once previously, before walking in again this morning, and I was able to have a better look around than before (I uploaded photos for those interested). I had not been in a Books a Million until I moved here to MD; they are not in Austin, TX. My first impression is that it is like a somewhat downgraded Barnes & Nobles in looks, and a little less so in product. There is ample lighting, but it feels kinda dull (dark?). When you walk in, you do see echoes of Barnes & Nobles, down to the Nook display and counter (hint, hint), but I am not sure if there is any actual affiliation. It certainly isn't as lively as any of the Barnes & Nobles I have been in, despite the presence of a Joe Muggs cafe. This morning there were like 3 people sat in the cafe, and about 4 more customers and 3 employees. It is as quiet as a library. They have several shelves to the right-side filled with bargain books, and depending on your genre of choice, they are either well-represented with cheap buys, or not. I am a Current Affairs/Politics/Modern History book junkie, so people like me are S.O.L. :( But if you like Cooking, you're well covered. The rest of the bookstore, i.e the entire left-side of the front entry, and back walls, has regularly priced books and other bits - toys, games, etc. I was disappointed with their Current Affairs section, because it doesn't specifically exist. There are two sections named Social Science and Politics that are adjacent, and the books are just mixed in. However, the shelves are not stuffed with volumes and there are several spaces between books. Not threadbare-looking, but it gives you the feeling that their entire catalog for this section is not out on display. The books are regularly priced, and I did snap the odd title just to check if it would be cheaper online. I didn't really check out the other topical shelves, as I wasn't interested in anything else today, so I am uncertain if the other sections are similar. Ok - there is only so much you can say about a bookshop - it has books in it. What is missing from here is the ambiance. It just feels...dead. It was empty before when I visited a few weeks ago, and it was dead as disco again today. I have to check this place out on a weekend, when most people are presumably out and shopping. I hope it has a nicer buzz to it then, what with the coffee shop - as otherwise, it feels about as inspiring as a dentist's waiting room. There are no pictures or decorations on the walls - at least not that I noticed, which made the place feel more hollow than a Barnes & Nobles. Its not as institutional or sterile looking as a well-worn public library, but it doesn't feel "happy." I don't know what other word to use, the place just felt kinda dead. It has books and stuff in it, but it just doesn't feel "right" to me. Maybe I'm just a weirdo, I guess, but it feels like I am in a building that happens to have books in it, rather than a good bookstore. I can't even recall now if there was background music playing. And weirdly enough, I normally feel compelled to grab a coffee and browse the stacks and shelves and tables - but here @ BAM, I barely felt like lingering, and the sense of emptiness just didn't compel me to want to fry away my morning before finding a place to watch the Italy v Costa Rica match this lunchtime. I actually get the feeling that this is like a smaller, satellite store of sorts. It is in the middle of a shopping plaza wedged between an Advance Auto Parts and a Sports Authority, and further down a Burlington Coat Factory and a hair salon supply type store. Yeah, action-packed. The store front is kinda sad-looking, not a stand-alone outlet mall-esque location at all. I really love bookstores - and I want to like this BAM - but I can't get over the empty, lifeless feeling I got on visiting it twice now. It also sucks, for me anyway, that it is in bloody Waldorf and I have to drive 20 mins out to feel...lifeless, lol! But I think the area I live in wouldn't really appreciate a nice bookstore much, anyway. On the plus side, the employees I've encountered are very helpful, and quick to smile and say "hi." And I've been around them as they talk about books, so it seems they enjoy being around books and not just there because its a Walmart-type job. And before I forget - in addition to the Joe Muggs cafe, they have Wi-fi access - BUT I think you have to be a member of the charmingly-named Millionaires Club Card scheme, for 25 Federal Reserve notes. For what it's worth, if you go to the BAM website now, at the top of the landing page, you'll notice that they are offering a $5 off a $35 purchase code, for use in-store. That's a way to get out there and check it out yourself, right?! Happy browsing - and help give the place some life!

We both love to read and love bookshops. I love big bookshops, little bookshops, romance bookshops... Lost City Books was a wonderful surprise and immediately became one of my favorite bookshops in DC. Why? It isn't huge, but it makes such good use of its space that I found it to be one of the best stocked independent bookstores I've visited in a long while. I always try to support local independent bookstores when I can, and some of them are tiny (if your neighborhood bookstore is one of the tiny ones, remember they'll probably place orders for you if you want/need something they don't have in stock). But - at the risk of sounding silly - we got lost in time at Lost City Books. We meant to just pop in and quickly pick something to take home. But we wandered through their fiction section and staff picks, pointing out books to each other we loved or have been meaning to read and all of a sudden a half hour had passed and we only really explored one tiny section of the shop. We walked out with four books between us, too. The customer service was friendly to boot. Just a great independent bookshop and another reason to love Adams Morgan.

Not too crowded which I liked as it can get pretty tight since there's many books and many shelves. Service was fine although I didn't really talk to many people while there (was more preoccupied with finding the books and checking them out). I'd say this place has great value as the books i got (3) were charged a total of just under $5. I can see why the staff put up flyers stating to be mindful with how many books the customers get as they're priced pretty low, allowing you to collect a decent amount. I'll definitely be back to check this place out again :)

Want three aisles of kids books like Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys? Go here. Need every book C.S. Lewis wrote? Stop by Second Story Books. After visiting nearby ZavaZone with our seven-year-old daughter, we stopped into Second Story for a few minutes, which easily turned into an hour. Every book is 50% off. We left with 15 books for just under $21. The books are well organized and maps help navigate visitors to each section, but know that the warehouse's narrow book aisles can get cramped. It adds to the appeal! There are even harder-to-find rooms with other items like posters for sale. They also sell CDs and DVDs. Staff are helpful. I lost my wallet and within an hour a staff member messaged me on Facebook letting me know they found it and it was safe at the checkout desk. If you have used books, Second Story Books buys them from people.

HUGE used book store and well worth the drive!…read more Their trade in process was really straightforward - when you walk in there's a trade in counter where they ask you to put your books into bins. I had one large bag that I sorted between two bins, one for books and the other for single issue comics and DVDs/non-books. About 45 minutes later I got a text that my trade-in was ready. I came back to the same counter after browsing the store and they offered me in-store credit or a lower amount in cash. They also returned the items they didn't want and I had the option to take them with me or leave them as a donation. I think it was a fair deal for what I donated, and I opted for the in-store credit. The store has a great mix of used books, dvds, comics, vinyl, and more that's pretty well organized. I will say there's a fair amount of duplicates of certain titles and it was interesting that some were priced higher than others - so check all the labels! In general the prices were reasonable with a few exceptions - I saw a really worn copy of a new hardback that they were selling for the list price ($35!) even though it had been out long enough that other books sellers were discounting it already. But then I also got a box set of dvds for $10 and a bunch of kids books for $0.50-2.00. It was easy to spend that in-store credit!

I have been shopping at this store for years now, unfortunately todays trip will be my last. Mckays…read morehas always had inaccurate pricing, but today they were so bad that I almost thought I was dreaming. Tell me why I saw Star Wars the Clone Wars: Lightsaber Duels for $18... Currently this game goes for $3.67 on pricecharting, heck when it game out in 2008 its peak was only a measly $5. Multiple gbc/gba shovelware games all overmarket, by around 10 dollars as well. In general the amount of 3-5 dollar games that they are trying to pass off as 15 - 20 dollar games is dis gracefully disgusting. The point of traveling to these stores are to get the good deals. All of the inventory they have are traded in for or donated so it makes NO sense! It seems that the employees make guesses when it comes to prices, that or they are being told to overprice by upper management. By the gaming section there was a sign that claimed that all of the consoles and equipment is tested beforehand by "gamers with over 30 years of experience" whatever that means. I got an Xbox One Kinect from them back in December, and worked normally. A couple days later I wanted to try using its mic functionality, was not functioning. So it was never fully tested by "gamers with over 30 years of experience" lol. The worst part is that they give you a 3 day warranty... it's not like people have kids, jobs, or other commitments I guess. The media (dvds and blu rays) were also overpriced per usual. Usually only by 5-10 bucks. My main discrepancy today was that I saw multiple dvds and blu rays with dirt and filth smattered on the covers. Your telling me that they have the audacity to up charge, and still refuse to even spend 10 seconds wiping the cover with a lysol wipe? Is it that hard to do? Disgusting! I can't speak on their book pricing as I am not well versed but pretty much everything else is overpriced in this store. It really sucks because these type of stores are supposed to be for lower income families who can't buy new. And instead is being treated like a greedy gaming convention booth. I genuinely feel bad for kids nowadays who want to start growing a small gaming collection post pandemic. With greedy "thrift" stores like this, even the shovel ware games are off-limits.
