IT'S HERE. The best gelato in the U.S. is here! My search is complete. The people of the small city of Bend just do not know how lucky they are to have this gem in the center of their town. I've searched far and beyond Italy to find anything close to decent gelato in the States (since circa 2009). Four years later, around 2013 I gave up looking at all because I thought "decent gelato" in the U.S. was something made up by people who hadn't yet died and experienced heaven in Italy. I first tried Bonta Natural Artisan Gelato last year in 2016 and went back this year (twice) just to confirm that I wasn't crazy or having a one-off experience. Even if they have the best gelato ever, I'm highly disappointed in their masking stance. Oregon health states businesses must require vaccination proof for customers to be maskless. Absolutely amazing! Bonta has a family-business vibe - very easy-going, friendly staff who offer samples and recommendations. We got the cranberry cognac with a dollop of coconut gelato (you can do that!) and the toasted strawberry with a dollop of hazelnut. OMG - bomb. By far the best gelato I've ever had. Don't leave Bend without coming here. On a 100 degree day, my boys and I bookmarked this place on Yelp and came around 2pm. We didn't have any line, but from the reviews...it seems they can get long. Don't fret- it's worth any wait you have. I have not found this good of gelato anywhere in the states. Amidst the froyo of Southern California, I sometimes forget just how amazing a real scoop of gelato is. I had the caramel, my boys had the roasted strawberry and the vanilla. We sat amongst friendly people (there are no angry people in Bend) and devoured every last bite. As good as this tastes on a hot Summer day...we will enjoy it just the same when we return in Winter! read more

3 stars because the gelato is good, but they won't mail a gift card. I put together a gift of gift cards from local places in Bend for someone who is moving to Bend soon. I don't live in Bend, we just visit; so, I needed the gift card mailed to me. They said I'd have to come into the shop to get the physical card. You can ask for tastes before you choose your flavors and they let you have multiple flavors even in the small size cup. I had two flavors, dark chocolate and peanut butter & chocolate. I felt rushed by the line behind me, didn't realize I could get multiple flavors in a large cup, and ordered poorly. The texture of Gelato blows typical ice cream out of the water. I had some great Gelato years ago and it was such a surprise to come across Bonta downtown and it beat our initial expectations! Our favorites are spread out in our family - My husband's favorite is Vanilla Bourbon Pecan, daughters love Roasted Strawberry Honey (honestly I do too!) and I recently decided that Stracciatella won me over. I would love to visit during a not busy time and I could branch out and try some of their other flavors. I know they allow/encourage you to sample but when the line is always full, I can't bring myself to make the wait longer for others. So until then, we will fight the urge to go more often, stand in the line, and walk away happily with our favorites :) read more

After tasting a few choice samples and wrestling with choices, I settled on pistachio and milk chocolate with lavender holm toffee. Small, cute shop just off Bond Street in downtown. Nice selection of flavors, nothing too crazy original. Small cup goes for $4.50. A pint goes for $7.50. A half dozen or so are pre-packed and ready to go. I picked up a pint of the dulce de leche with sea salt, which is still in my freezer. Great local spot for some gelato indulgence. We came in one evening expecting the shop to be almost empty as it was almost closing time. Boy were we surprise to find a line past the entrance. Firstly, we like that they use reusable small spoons for customers to try the various flavors before making the difficult decision of choosing the best tasting gelato to enjoy. Secondly, it appears that they support local and in season ingredients (tumalo lavender, strawberries and more) to make their gelato thus creating a truly local taste. Thirdly, the friendly staff that are just as welcoming and sweet as their product. Yes we enjoyed our visit here and we support local stores like them. Got gelato. I had the coconut and the chocolate. The coconut was made with coconut milk, not regular milk, so it wasn't as creamy. The chocolate was perfect. My husband had dulce de leche and cinnamon maple pecan, which we're both excellent. Would definitely stop again if ever back in Bend. read more
