Ate dinner at Bono's, our first time... I was underwhelmed by the food and inattentive service by the server. Chicken tenders were overcooked. My husband's brisket was extremely dry. Not that Bono's was terrible, but with better options available, I'm not sure if I will eat here again anytime soon, because if choosing between an underwhelming meal or somewhere new, I'll try a different restaurant next time. Not sure about how suitable the restaurant is for anybody with mobility impairments. The front door is not wheelchair accessible or even ADA compliant. However they may have a back door that people could get in if they are in a wheelchair, but I don't know that for sure. read more

Bono's is a local mini-chain, and sadly I avoided it for years. What a mistake: great food, good value, and superb service (thank you Melissa!). I have been really missing out all this time. From the moment you enter there is no question that this is good BBQ: the sweet smell of cooking smoke wafts up from the real pit where all of the meats are slowly smoked by knowledgeable pitmasters. The interior is warn and rustic, with the feel of being inside an old friend's hunting & fishing lodge. I started with the Brunswick Stew, which was flavorful and chock full of tasty bits. In addition to tender pulled pork, the stew was chock-full of yummy veggies, including corn, butter beans, and potatoes. But the star of the show was the "Birddog" sandwich: a generous portion of smoked turkey capped with a split sausage link, all served on garlic Texas toast. The turkey was flavorful and fork tender, some of the juiciest bird I have ever tucked into. And the link was bursting with juice and a perfect foil to the more delicate turkey. I found the Hickory sauce complimented it nicely. And the wonderful (and slightly sassy) Melissa ensured that our beverages never ran dry. Just went today and it was great. We had a fantastic and sweet server and it was a nice ambience. The food was delicious, my boyfriend got turkey, I got pulled pork and we got corn nuggets. When you end up having to throw away at least half the brisket you ordered because of fat and gristle...then they offer to replace it if you drive all the way back and use up more of your gas... I don't know if it was because they had just opened for lunch or if it was a really good day, but everything we had was perfect. I found nothing wrong. The coleslaw was crisp and tangy, the fries were crispy outside and soft inside, the bread toasted just right, the meat perfectly smoked and falling off the bone, etc. Most of the time this Bono's is good, but this visit was fantastic. I ordered a brisket sandwich with sides. Sides were fine but the brisket was not editable. mostly fat and couldn't get a solid piece of meat in any bite. Had to throw the sandwich out. I counted out BBQ in Jacksonville because I'm not a fan oh the dry ribs. I'm use to having mines with sauce while it's on the grill. So for 4 years I drove past different Bono's thinking they were the same as Sonnys, or Woodys but in my opinion they're much different. The menu is similar and maybe even the look but Bono's is seasoned to the bone. I ordered the 3 different choices of meats with two sides for only 13.99: St. Louis ribs, beef brisket and pulled pork with Mac n cheese and baked beans. I was definitely surprised and didn't mind the price one bit. My boyfriend ordered the St. Louis ribs with double fries, and usually BBQ places have the "crinkle" fries but I'm glad Bonos doesn't. My brisket was amazing and so were the St. Louis ribs but I didn't really care for the pulled pork. The Mac n cheese isn't memorable but I loved the baked beans. My boyfriend said his meal was great, I loved his fries, lol he hates when I sample his food, but hey, I'm the one doing reviews! I need to give my honest opinion right? First time trying Bono's, which I was told is kind of a Jacksonville staple. Employees were super kind, even though we came strolling in for a to-go order 15 minutes before they close. They were helpful with trying to accommodate my keto diet. The brisket was pretty dang tasty! I'd definitely get it again. The toddler wanted Bono's for her birthday dinner... so we went! Staff quickly seated our group and our service was phenomenal throughout. Went for lunch. Place was packed. Service because of this was mixed. Some background, Im previously from NC. Ive eaten a lot of BBQ. Ive also got family roots in the midwest (lots of different BBQ there). Meat was ok. Well smoked but no other flavor. Was served on toast which was decent (how much can you screw up toast?) Had "baked beans". These reminded me of a bean soup I had. No flavor, looked and tasted like a bean mush. Baked beans should be full of flavor, and mostly not mush (a little mush is understandable). Baked beans to me is a signature item at a bbq joint, so really disappointed in this major item so lacking. read more

This is the original Bono's location. My club I belong to meets here a few times a year, otherwise I'd go to the location that's closer to home when I need a quick BBQ fix. There's parking in the front of the building but the majority of folks park in the back as there is also an entrance there too but be careful, the lot is not illuminated that well except for the one flood light by the back door. The food's alright. I passed on my usual smoked wings to get a large chicken platter (1/2 chicken) with a sweet potato and mac n' cheese. The chicken was really good and so was the potato but the mac 'n cheese didn't do anything for me. The cheese sauce tasted like processed cheese was used and I just didn't care for it. I should have gotten their awesome Banana Pudding. Can't go wrong there. At least the service was great. If my group continues to come back in the future, I'll continue to go. read more

Several days this week I heard the commercial "if there's not a pit, it's not legit " this commercial put me down memory lane to Bono's pit bar-bq in Brentwood with Leon saying that slogan everyday. My taste buds longed for my favorite Bono's Barbecue item, turkey salad with Italian dressing, the best smoked turkey This Side of Heaven. Tge turkey has a great taste is not too salty it's tender and a load of that turkey on top of fresh greens and tomatoes and fixings is a delight for me. The Bono's on Beach Boulevard did a good job with a salad but I also ordered a side of Brunswick stew which was a huge disappointment!. Please people go back and find the original Brunswick stew recipe and stop substituting Campbell's Chunky vegetable soup for Brunswick stew. The food is just OK. One of my favorite foods is Ribs and theirs just come up shy. They are never hot enough, kinda luke warm and not that tender. All the other meats are pretty good. Love the turkey and the chicken. The side dished are really good too. The Brunswick stew is always piping hot and tasty. The greens, macaroni and cheese and baked beans are also good. I love the atmosphere of the place and the wait staff is friendly. They do need a better ventilation system because when you leave and go back to the office you smell like you have spent hours over a smoker in your back yard. read more

Been coming here since 1971, when I came to Florida with the US Navy. Has always been the best Bar-B-Que ever. Well tonight we went in and it was like new management or something new menu, new menu items and changed menu items. What used to be some of the best onion rings anywhere are now something you can pull from your freezer. The portions on the pork Platters seemed @ 30% less than they were last time I was in. Sat in a booth that night and got the feast platter (28 bucks for all the meats... kinda like a sampler platter for two, great for a date) and sat @ the bar the next day and the pit boss on duty was my server. I've been eating at Bono's since the 1970's. I usually sit at the counter and watch the Pit master in action. The Bar-B-Q gets served up hot & fast at the counter. I order the small 2 meat combo, Beef (lean cut) & Sausage & double order of Brunswick stew. The Beef is good & moist & the sausage has great flavor. The Brunswick stew has a lot of meat in it too. *I would like to state that I am not a fan of BBQ so this review might be biased. Also the food was catered to my work so maybe that has something to do with it* So the meat was bland and needed sauce. The sauce I had was sweet and I prefer something spicy. I tried chicken, pork, and brisket and just couldn't get into any of it. The baked beans were just super sweet as well. Everything was either bland or sweet. The bread though was super soaked in butter so I totally support that but I didn't know it was garlic toast until someone told me. Still I very happily ate bread. The coleslaw was all so not bad. I was happy because it wasn't super coated in stuff and you could taste the veggies. Also yay for salad and ranch dressing cause that was also good. Been here a few times for lunch with coworkers and have yet to have a bad experience. However it seems we always get seated in the quieter section near the back of the restaurant with the same server. Which is fantastic. The service has always been good. There sandwiches are great. I usually get the slawpy big or bo hawg, which are great! The pulled pork is nicely shredded and seasoned. I love that they have a variety of BBQ sauces on the table. I've been to other locations, but had not been to this one yet. I love the look of the interior, with memorabilia from over the years at the restaurant. The servers are super friendly and attentive, making me feel right at home. I suggest starting off your meal with the corn nuggets. They come out piping hot, so be sure to have them cool off a tiny bit before biting into one! I always like ordering sandwiches, so my favorite is the Pork Sandwich with a side of Mac & Cheese. The Mac & Cheese is creamy, cheesy, and the perfect amount to pair with the smoky taste of the pork sandwich. Bono's has reasonable prices, so you don't have to worry about paying a lot for excellent barbeque. It will remain one of my favorite joints to visit! read more
