Absolutely ON POINT flavor. I requested Indian hot Dal Tadka. Without doubt, the flavors that come into this are wonderfully put together. Hard core Indian food- authentic to the Tee. I almost gave them 3 stars because I LOVE my wine. I asked for a Syrah that they didn't have so I switched to a Pinot Noir. I asked them they'd opened it, it was yesterday. Didn't bother me. However my wine was hints of vinegar that says- you opened the bottle and left it at room temperature that wasn't cold to store it well. When I pointed it out midway to my host- he quickly offered to replace my glass with a new opened bottle. Man that wine was so much better (even though it wasn't aired out). The hospitality in understanding how wine changes a meal for me even though the people serving wine here aren't wine drinkers is admirable. Coming back to the food- delicious flavors, every entree shines. The tandoor roti was smoky goodness made to perfection. A single roti comes equivalent to 1.5-1.45 rotis of other restaurants so having a bang for your buck is critical. I walked in thinking I'll eat a quarter of roti and here I am wiping my plate clean. Great Indian food! You can tell when your in a legit Indian place when a large Indian family is eating right next to you. My friend and I were traveling to NZ and of all the places we went to, this restaurant was by far the best. We had Lamb Madras and Butter Chicken. I would'nt get the salad we ordered again since it was basically raw vegetables with a lot of onions sprinkled with some seasoning. Other than that, food was delicious. Having been in Queenstown for a couple of days, my family and I were looking forward to trying a local desi restaurant. Bombay Palace did not disappoint. The service was top-notch. The staff were courteous and timely. The food arrived hot, delicious, and with generous helpings in each plate. I especially enjoyed the lamb biryani I had--and if your palate can take it, go for the "Indian Hot" spice level as I did. You'll be hit with equal and healthy doses of taste and extreme heat. It's a fun experience. The traditional desi music in the background and beautiful paintings resembling the many facets of Indian life and history were a pleasant change from the rest of the restaurants in town. I would recommend rearranging some of the seating, however. The tables where I was sitting were too close to one another, which made maneuvering out of your seat without bumping into others a bit of a challenge. It's not a huge issue, but it was something I noticed and found worth mentioning. There is a clean restroom on the second floor, with separate stalls for both genders. The sink is shared. As for parking, you'll have to find an empty spot on the street, which is difficult to do in the hustle and bustle of Queenstown. There are paid parking meter sections strewn around town that you can (hopefully) park your car in. When my family and I arrived at one of these paid parking sections, a car was just leaving, so we lucked out. The rest of the spots were all taken, so I cannot say how easy it is to find parking, even in paid parking sections in town. Thank you for a fun and tasty night in Queenstown, Bombay Palace team. The most well known Indian spot around the area. The price points are indeed on more of the pricier side but we did enjoy the different types of curry. Ordered the lamb tiki masala and lamb Beef cubes which were both solid in flavor and tenderness. The portions were, however, a bit small for the price but it was a pleasant experience overall. (customer service included) It is a smaller restaurant located downtown of Queenstown so parking is harder to find. They do have a second floor so finding a table shouldn't be too bad. Fine dining with casual ambiance and reasonable fares. Bombay palace is located right next to another Indian restaurant and the relaxed and casual decor of Bombay Palace compared to the more upscale look of Taj nearly had me and my wife choose that given the proximity to one another. Choose Bombay Palace - you won't be upset. After carefully comparing both menus the samosas and Garlic Naan on the starters menu at Bombay Palace had us choosing them as we were in the mood for some light fare since we had some walking to do afterwards. This place literally was the best BEST Indian food I've ever had. Their Samosas are super fresh and lightly flaky, mix those with some garlic Chile naan and you've got some starters to get you going. If you don't like spicy beware because the Chile's in the naan if you get them have some bite to them. Delicious! Their chicken madras was so delicious. The slight hint of the coconut mixed with the medium spice (perfect heat) over basmati rice was a delicious dish to share. They bring out all their dishes family style which is nice for everyone to have a taste. I wish I could have their sauces bottled and sent back home. So damn good. What's funny is if you took their food and dropped it in a more upscale venue they could easily charge triple for it (and I would happily pay). read more

This had been a worst experience ever at any restaurant we ever visited. We were embarrassed and felt threatened by the Manager on Duty. Learning about the excellent food at Bombay Palace, we decided to dine in. After waiting for 2 hours we finally got our seat at 8:45pm. We were excited to try various dishes and couldn't wait since we all were extremely hungry. They finally took our order after 30 mins of wait. We were now anxious to get our food, so after about 20 mins, we politely asked the manager how much longer we would need to wait. We don't know what had got the manager upset but he simply snapped. He started yelling and screaming at us for not having patience. We do understand they are busy and having many takeout order but being disrespectful and being rude is not the way food industry works. The mangers did not stop at yelling and cursing in front of small kids who were in our group but he went to an extent of canceling the entire order and asked us to leave. On requesting him to be calm and be courteous he took the water away from our table and shouted at us to get out of his restaurant. It was very humiliating and embarrassing to get cursed in front of the strangers. The kids felt very scared. The manager at one point almost went physical and about to hit one of the guest when the guest told the manager to stop screaming at us. As a tourist in this part of the neighborhood we have felt very threatened and scared by this violent behavior. We would strongly recommend no one should patronize this location and the restaurant. The Manager had a nervous breakdown, we do sympathize with the mental stress he was going through but no one should deserve to be treated the way we were. It felt this restaurant is getting lot of business for the food but if the patrons (& probably the server / cooks) are not respected and treated well, it can lead to potential dangerous situation. Do take into consideration of being treated poorly next time you consider Bombay Palace. Bombay Palace Manager was impolite, rude, threatening, have bad language and very violent person. The incident not only spoilt our perfectly great evening but left a unpleasant memories about our visit to New Zealand. It had been traumatic for the kids in our group and the patrons who were around us to witness such a unpleasant situation. read more

The food was good. I'm giving this place 3 stars for two reasons: 1) It took FOREVER for the food to come out. They gave us "papar" appetizers about 5 mins before everything was served. I easily must have waited 30-40 mins. I'm going to assume the free appetizer was to make up for the wait. My suggestion, it probably costs less than a dollar to serve those. If you're busy just do that at the start with some chutney for a better guest experience. 2) The naan was insanely oily. But, really #1 is why. A bit pricey per dish, but the quality of the food was amazing. We ordered garlic naan and they are VERY generous with the garlic cloves on each piece. One order is about 1.5 pieces naan (half pieces). It's enough for 2 people to share. Each main entree comes with basmanti. We ordered chicken tikka masala and the lamb vindaloo. Both were great and you can order each based on different levels of spiciness (mild to indian hot). Good, quick service. I'd recommend it if you want a good Indian meal in town. We visited twice during our 5day trip. First time we visited it was way past 8:30pm and second time we reached around 7pm. It was busy both times and kitchen service is very, very slow. You can literally see people waiting for food. Be prepared to to entertain yourself while you wait for food. We tried tandoori platter, vegetarian platter, hara bhara kabab, tadka dal, dal makhani, papad platter, masala papad, and paneer tikka masala. Paneer tikka masala was very flavourful. Masala papad were yummy. Tandori and veggie platters are worth a try. Paneer tikkas in the platter were too dry and cold. Tadka dal was bland and lacked any taste , even salt. Tl;Dr This place has some of the best Indian food I've ever had. Definitely worth the stop if you're in Queenstown. Before coming here I'd say that I wasn't fond of Indian food whether that was from having bad experiences or just not enjoying the flavors. So coming here with my family, I was extremely wary of what kind of food we would receive. However once we got our food I was quickly converted to an Indian food lover. The curries here are incredible. They have so many different types and they're all so delicious. They're nice and thick, perfect for the basmati rice they provide, and have a great creaminess to them. Their portions are a bit small, but honestly I think its so good that its worth it. Lamb is a little more uncommon in the United State so it was great trying lamb in the curries here. Even my mom who dislikes lamb for its gamey taste loved the food here and insisted that we came back two more times. Our waiter was also really friendly, taking time to talk with us and give us some tips about what to do in Queenstown while we visited. Definitely the icing on the cake for us. read more

When it comes to restaurants there's a few things I hold of utmost importance. Service, Taste, Ambience. Bombay Palace's food was decent, not the best I've ever had but had a few dishes with nice taste. The ambience is a bit noisy, but that may be expected with the traffic they receive. Maybe it's because I'm from United States and service is so important to a restaurant's survival, the food here was not good enough to survive the poor service. There are other reviews that speak of the speed, that isn't my main concern, I think it's demeanor. The concierge was quite rude when we had asked for seating of an 8 o'clock reservation and we were asked to "wait outside in the back" until they would call us in. We did not get seated until 8:30 for a reservation we had made a while back. And we did not vacate until 11:10 because of the speed of service. Our server also requested we order everything together; the apps, mains and etc to ensure faster retrieval of our orders. I want the experience when I spend decent prices, I just did not receive that with this restaurant. There is just too much traffic for a small kitchen. If you want food taste, this place is decent; if you want a tranquil meal....I would choose elsewhere. read more

This indian gem is hidden and tucked away in the heart of Queenstown next to a Mexican restaurant. It has two levels of seating but the place gets busy (at least on sunday night for dinner). We were lucky enough to get seated right away on the top level. Menu is quite exhaustive and the masala (spices) will leave you licking your fingers and plates. Service was great and it has a tv with bollywood songs playing in the back to give you a complete indian experience. No wifi but don't worry as you will be busy eating the good food. read more

At this point we cancelled the order and went down the street to a thai restaurant which was pretty good. Cant recommend an establishment that struggles with their service this way. Upon cancelling the order the waitresses were apologetic but the (i believe to be) manager on duty was curt with us and told us there were many phone orders ahead of us which caused the wait, but gave us a "shrug" when i told him that the table next to us (which came in and ordered probably 20 minutes after we did) was almost done eating their meal when we finally called it quits. Walkable from the airport if the weather's good and probably the best option for dinner in Frankton as far as we were concerned. We had dinner here yesterday and were quite disappointed. We had ordered yellow dal tadka, aloo gobhi with gravy and few naans. The order was just regular Indian food which does not require any expertise to cook. Any average Indian house hold cooks these items much tastier than what we had there ! Secondly, we were told that gravies come with basmati rice as accompaniment. Well, there rice was pathetic, to say the least.
