I debated long and hard before I decided on a rating for this place. They are not what you would call a traditional restaurant you would expect in the US. But if they were in India, they would fit right in! I have specific items that i absolutely love here and come to the store just for these. I know for a fact these are fresh made daily ( just given the volume they sell each day + having heard that from a wedding vendor a while ago). I absolutely love love love their motichur Ladoos! For anyone unfamiliar - these are little dessert balls made with ghee, sugar and chickpea flour. They sell these by the hundreds each day. Anytime we visit friends that are not from the area, they beg us to bring them som Ladoos. Very reminiscent of India and how these are traditionally made. I wouldn't change a thing about them. I also love their Gulab jamun and Cham Cham - again desserts that are super popular in India and I think they do very well. I've never bought these from here and found them to be lacking in taste or stale etc. When it comes to savory food, we have a few things we love - samosas ( again made fresh daily, they sell a lot of these). Love the tamarind chutney these come with. I actually buy that sauce by the tub to have at home for other Indian dishes, it's really really good. - the Dahi poori chaat, again delicious and always fresh - aloo tikki chaat, big fan favorite at our home when it comes to Indian street food - chole Bhature, so so yum and very reminiscent of India with the taste They used to do Indian breakfast platters over the weekend but stopped now which I'm bummed about. I stay away from the hot food bar because I don't usually like that. People seem to love it. The place is def a little rough around the edges, dated and a little sad looking. My rating is based on delicious food and an exceptionally friendly staff. The restaurant is strictly strip mall. Comfortable and clean, but not very decorated. We were on our way to lunch at another favorite restaurant, when we walked in here. Another patron saw us puzzling the ordering instructions and came over to both explain it and confirm this is a great place to eat. We tried a two curry lunch platter with butter chicken and chicken curry and a naan on the side. They were so delicious I went back to order more to-go for tonight -- tandoori chicken and chicken biryani. It all seemed a great value for a wonderful lunch. read more

Bombay Cafe is a little hidden gem for Indian food. I got a takeout order and I was impressed with the flavorfulness of both dishes. The service was very quick and seamless. I can now rest assured that I made a good decision on where to go for Indian food... Butter chicken-- Very mild and buttery taste with a slight kick of spices. Pairs really well with Raita and the jasmine rice. I recommend this dish and it was a hit for the family. Shahi paneer-- Excellent vegetarian dish with chunks of soft paneer in a tomatoe based shahi paneer sauce. I absolutely love this dish and thought they did a great job with the paneer consistency and shahi sauce flavor. Garlic naan and Samosa--Packed with garlic and great add on to the prior dishes. I recommend not getting this take out or at least toasting it more since it wasn't crunchy upon arrival. The samosa was everything you'd expect a good samosa to taste like. Not too dry either. The place is as grimy as ever, Bollywood photos askew, paint worn out on hi-vis hi-traffic doors, smelly bathrooms, rexine sofas torn, etc etc. The food is OK, the sweets and savories very good. However, they did not have desi mirchis ("Thai chillies") when I asked for some to garnish my chhole-bature: I wonder what chillies they use in their dishes. Their haleem, traditionally a mushy Muslim dish of finely shredded meats/chicken combined wholly with smoothly mashed lentils, had large chicken pieces, including some bone-in ones. One cold evening on a weekend, I was craving for some good Indian sweets. Was talking to one of my good friends that night and shared my craving with her. She then suggested this place in Virginia and we decided to go there. It took us about an hour to drive here, but it was well worth it. The sweets available were exactly the kind that I often crave of, the syrupy gulab jamun and chum chum types. They had jangree and jilebi too. We both got quite a few of each variety and later shared them among ourselves. Each one of them was delicious and didn't disappoint our taste buds! We also ordered pani puri, bhel puri, samosa chat and papri chat. They were all good, but each lacked something. Papri chat had a lot of yoghurt just the way I like it, we all loved it! But the rest of them didn't satisfy us as much. Samosa chat was a bit too spicy, Pani puri and bhel puri were disappointing. The prices were reasonable and the place is well kept! I loved how authentic the taste was - not adapted to cater to the non-Indian palate while maintaining the right amount of mildness to be super yummy without runny noses :) The gobi paranthas and Punjabi kadi were just like grandma made - FYI the paranthas are HUGE, so split them if you wanna enjoy some other dishes/appetizers (papdi chaat and samosa chaat were my favorite - skip the pani puri though). Also tried the fish curry (meh) and lassi (how can you not like mango lassi!). Others in my group were raving about the butter chicken too. Bombay Cafe is such a hidden restaurant in Fairfax! There were so many different options of curry to choose from, along with different desserts and sides that you can choose. I did the 'pick 2' which was around $10 and comes with rice, naan, and a dessert; I got the butter chicken and dal makhani which were pretty good, but the amount of curry to the rice/naan didn't really match up well. I wish their curry portions were a bit bigger. Other than that, it's a super homey restaurant, and the service was good! read more

The cafe itself is pretty run down and not maintained very well. It is a bit offputting when going through the cafiteria waiting line and sitting at uncleaned tables. Everything purchased here is seperate so make sure to get rice or Nann if that is your jam. The somosa are on a hand written note saying that they are made to order so please be patient with the wait, it will be worth it (or something along those lines). I was excited for it. I really enjoyed my ground chicken dish. It had a nice spice to it. The dinners all come automatically with fresh hot naan, basmati rice, and a nice bit of dessert. Very filling and delicious meal, $8-$10, depending on 2 or 3 entree choices. The young couple who helped me with my take away dinner were very kind and helpful. Truly one of the more unique Indian eateries I have come across. Attached to an Indian grocery store, one orders at the counter either a la carte or from a cafeteria line of daily rotating vegetable and meat dishes with a 6.99 lunch special that reminds me of an Indian version of the "meat and three" joints down South. The special comes with a large mound of basmati rice, a frisbee sized disc of warm fluffy naan, choice of two entrees, and a complimentary dessert. In the main dining area, don't forget to help yourself to the soup of the day (usually dal, a split pea-like soup w/ lentils and various spices), pickled mango chutney, and sliced red onions. Folks may complain about the no frills appearance of the dining area, the fact that the A/C is not cranked up appropriately, and the stoic service, but I actually find that it adds to the charm since this seems like a place where the first generation Indians hang out for a homecooked meal that reminds them of the motherland rather than the traditional Indian buffet, the new fast casual joints that are all the rage, or the fine dining makeovers of classic working class dishes. I like that slight discomfort of feeling like I've stepped into a space that's completely foreign to me and sampling dishes that are not expected to adhere to a prototype geared towards non-natives. The chana masala (chickpeas) and butter chicken have an unexpected intensity in flavors that linger on your tongue in a way that invites you back for more. On a second visit, I sampled a stir-fried eggplant dish that uses real Indian eggplants with the stems intact in a rich onion/tomato chutney with contrasting textures and flavors between the flesh and skin of the eggplant that are unique to its Italian and Japanese counterparts. Even the dal, which is typically bland in most Indian buffets, has a nice earthy flavor with pleasant undertones of spice. There is also a completely separate display counter of colorful Indian desserts to go, traditional appetizers, and a la carte specials if one chooses to forgo the combination special. A delicious change of pace from traditional Indian fare that is light on the wallet but rich in authenticity. read more

My in-laws have gone to Bombay Cafe for years and have brought my husband and me some of the platters to try on occasion. One thing that is clear is there is no uniformity to the food, as the taste seems to fluctuate depending on who is making it (in my head it's a bunch of Indian aunties who don't use recipes and freestyle the food according to their own palettes). Although the food appears to be good value for the portions, it's never flavorful and at times, it borders on being inedible. We've tried various palak (spinach) dishes a few times and they have been so salty to the point that we have thrown away entire plates. As someone that likes my food well salted even I can say that the amount of salt that is added to some of their dishes will make anyone's blood pressure rise to astronomical levels! The Shahi Paneer, Daal and Naan all leave something to be desired, though not quite as inedible as the spinach dishes. The only condition upon which Bombay Cafe is the right choice would be if you're looking for good value for the sheer volume of food you're getting. If you're on a quest for good Indian food, there are a ton of better options within a 10 mile radius! read more

Do not recommend this restaurant. We ordered 3 chicken appetizer and with each appetizer they gave Chole which was the strangest thing I have noticed and first of its kind. Who serves chole with non-veg appetizer. The taste of appetizer (and Chole) were not good. Undercooked chicken. My wife ordered Chole Bhature . We were expecting two fluffy Puri type of bhature as they are served regularly, instead, we received more than 10 small type puris. Chole served did not taste good at all.
