We took seats at the counter (a first for us), and I was just mesmerized by a woman who I later learned was Naomi, the assistant manager. I'd never seen her before (she admitted she often worked weekdays), but she was a dynamo. I watched her answer phones, take to-go orders, check on counter patrons, service her assigned tables, pack up orders, remember ever little "hold this" and "sub this" from memory, ask patrons if they'd like this or that to enhance their meals, help out fellow staff who were hustling to meet demand, notice and refill coffee and waters without being asked...it was honestly amazing to just watch. And she did it without looking frazzled, with a genuine smile and positive disposition, and being encouraging and supportive of fellow staff members. When she came by to ask if I wanted a top-off of my coffee, I had to tell her how exceptional she was. Many moons ago I was in the service industry, and a pace like that and a demand like that would frazzle and fry even the most seasoned vet. But not Naomi...it's like she just thrived under pressure. How much she just remembered of every patron's orders and preferences and asks right off the top of her head was nothing short of remarkable. She could tell that my son (who is autistic) enjoyed sitting at the counter and peeking into the kitchen, and she took a few moments to ask him about it and how he liked his pancakes. He asked if we could purchase a cup (as a souvenir, but also because it had JMU stamped on it; his cousin just graduated this year so he likes everything JMU), and she grabbed a clean/new one from the back and rang one up for us to take home. Once we were seated, I was shocked that they didn't offer or ask if a high chair was needed for my 2 year old. I am used to most places asking when they see small children.
