OVERALL: 9/10 (Yelp Converted Score: 4.5/5; rounds to 5/5). This small Bodega has been open for just over 2.5 years, but wow, is this place impressive. My fiance, mother and I came here to eat without a reservation at around 10am on a Sunday (weekend) in mid-July 2022. At the time we arrived, there was only one party on the patio and nobody inside, but it seems like every indoor table was reserved.
Verdict: Yep, this place is worth trying, and then coming back for more!
Don't bring too many people, though - the biggest accommodating table is likely four! (Also, given how good this place is, you probably want to actually get a reservation, unlike us)
1) VARIETY/SELECTION: 8/10. The weekend brunch menu fit neatly on a wide one-pager; they have a couple of "bowl" options, 10 brunch options, two kids options, and four sides. If you're nitpicking, this isn't a TON of options, but to be fair, their restaurant is literally a tiny corner townhouse. Give them a break.
2) FRESHNESS: 9.5/10. My cappuccino was great; I forgot what my mother and fiance both ordered for drinks, but it looked good. For food, we ordered (among 3 people) and shared bits of the following three dishes:
- Eggs benedict with homemade peameal - they used a French croissant for this! I was particularly impressed with how good the hollandaise sauce was, and the fluffiness of the eggs in combination with the dish.
- Falafel sandwich - my fiance's favourite. I liked it too! I was impressed with the depth of flavour - especially between soy hummus, pickled watermelon radish, baby arugula, sourdough bread, with cilantro+edamame falafel.
- Savory French toast - they used thicc French bread - this was easily my highlight (I'm a sucker for sweet food, though). Berries, maple syrup - and DO YOU SEE ALL OF THAT BUTTER?! Yea, I know it's going to clog my arteries, but YOLO; this is the kind of brunch life you want to be living! (Otherwise seriously, why did you bother coming here for BRUNCH? ORDER THIS!)
We also separately ordered 8 pastries "for later":
- 2 blueberry scones
- 2 raspberry scones
- 2 almond croissants
- 2 caramel Graham squares
I don't think we ate any of them, but they certainly smelled delicious, and looked very flaky!
3) VALUE FOR MONEY: 9.5/10. $62 CAD for 3 coffees and three dishes (three people) - $80 CAD after tip. Overall, pretty good, given how big the portion sizes were, and how full we were afterwards.
4) SERVICE: 9/10. The place was PACKED, and there were only three people working, so with that in mind, the food / drinks did take some time to make it to our table, but all things considered, it was decent service, given that they had a back patio that I saw the staff scurrying between (it's a bit of a walk, once you see it, you'll understand).
I was impressed with how many people there were, and yet, how disciplined the wait staff were at serving drinks, then what was ordered, and keeping each table's orders in queue.
5) CONSISTENCY / FIRST IMPRESSION: 9/10. There's a back patio (that's detached from the main property, but visible from the main patio), and we saw that looked pretty packed since we arrived. As we were leaving, there was a line out the door waiting for our table, and every table inside and outside was taken.
My advice? Get a reservation, or get here as early as possible (after they open). If you get here too late, you may end up finding yourself waiting... for possibly 1+ hours to get a table (it's popular, but also great).
There's no parking onsite; you'll have to park on the residential streets adjacent to this place. We ended up parking on the street about a block away, adjacent to a park/school. read more
