Since everyone is avoiding these places like the plague, service was quick and efficient and I was in and out faster than I hoped as there is so much to see with both the deli side and the butcher side. After reading the reviews I asked for a Montreal Smoked Meat sammie with Swiss and yellow mustard. To go with, I grabbed a peppers, olives and feta salad in a tub, and for dessert, a raisin butter tart. Even though the sammies are not over-priced, if you combine all that, it adds up to a few bucks. The sandwich was excellent! After reading the reviews, I expected a little more of the smoke meat piled high, but instead it had more of a reasonable amount. But omg, the bread stole the show! When I first perused the aisles, I noticed they carry Fred's bread, which I believe Healthy Butcher also sells. If you look at my photo, the bread slices look typical of any brand of mass-produced whole-wheat bread, nothing special. But the taste jumped out at me and over-powered the heavy sweetness of the meat and the tangy sourness of the mustard. Combined together it was heavenly. The salad was ok, can't go wrong with something basic like that and the butter tart was a perfect way to top off my lunch. Actually since I wasn't overly hungry that day I only ate half leaving the other half for later, which made me venture out for a slice, but hey, that's part of living downtown, it's just that convenient to stuff yourself.

I thought I'd picked up some sandwiches for my partner and I. I ordered a full sized il Capo and a full sized Paulie Porco and we split the two. The sandwiches are packed with ingredients so I ended up getting 2-3 meals with my 2 halves. I liked the il Capo the best. I'm not a big fan of olives, but the muffaletta spread wasn't overpowering and added a nice flavour. The Paulie Porco I would recommend eating hot. After putting some of it in the fridge for later, the fat congealed and so the texture wasn't as good. If you're going to save some for later, I would heat it up again if you can, or just eat it fresh. I am looking forward to going back and trying some of the others!

It also just looked delicious. Let me tell you... it's to die for. It doesn't jump out at you with a bold taste or like there is a ton of cinnamon, but the texture and doughiness of it is so nice. The chunks are big and fluffy, and the inside is airy. They're not dry nor are they too greasy. In a way, they almost feel like eating a big fresh doughnut. They come with an Aunt Jemima-style maple syrup, so it isn't the real stuff. However, I honestly prefer the cheap syrup, but that's just a possibly unconventional personal preference. Maybe someone should revoke my Canadian citizenship after that confession... Anywho, the price was roughly $10 and I felt it was pretty fair. I'd frequent this place much more often if the price were still in the $6-$7 range for a full order of French Toast, but I didn't feel ripped off afterwards or anything. There are spots to sit inside in the back and a decent setup on the sidewalk of 3 or 4 tables, but it's pretty busy out there. The lady who took my order was super friendly as well. Looking forward to going back and trying some of their deli cuts or soups.

A Toronto institution since 1984, this specialty grocery store sells lots of high quality European products as well as has a large deli meat and cheese selection. They also do deli sandwiches where you order at the counter, where the sandwich is made to order. I've heard of this Italian neighbourhood gem for a while now where I finally went to try their sandwiches recently (on a Saturday!). Walking to the storefront, we almost missed the shop as the "La Salumeria" was so unassuming where the colour was fading as well. Walking inside, every inch of the store was filled with products. Reading other reviews, we made sure to pick up our bread before heading to the counter, which had a short line (about only 3 people ahead of us which was a relief since we went on a Sat around 1pm). Near the cashier there were also lots of delicious looking baked goods as well. We opted to grab a kaiser bun and an Italian bread for the house special sandwich. We also decided to get a mortabella sandwich with the ciabatta bun. At the counter, service was friendly and efficient. All the staff at the deli were working hard to serve customers, making sure that we were attended to. Carlo, the owner, was also present in the shop, helping out making sandwiches as well as recommending customers certain cheeses and answering questions. After placing our order at the counter and handing over our breads to the staffs, we waited about 5 min for our sandwiches to be made. Paying at the cashier, the shop takes cash, debit and credit. When we left, there was another staff who opened the door for us. We ate our sandwiches once we got home. The house special which consists of prosciutto, spicy salami, creamy buffalo mozzarella, ripe tomatoes, spicy peppers, fig jam, balsamic vinegar and olive oil, was delicious. The quality of the deli meats and cheese are definitely the highlight of the sandwich! The fig jam also adds a slight sweetness to the sandwich which works incredibly well with the rest of the ingredients. We also shared a mortabella sandwich which consisted of mortadella, pistachio cream, burrata, tomato and lettuce. The mortabella was good but the house special is definitely the sandwich to order! Priced at around $16 each, the portions of the sandwiches are hefty with ingredients packed inside. The ingredients itself speak for themself as they are fresh and top notch! Service was quick and efficient but friendly. Overall, a great spot for take out sandwiches and other specialty grocery store items. They also have a large selection of deli meats and cheeses as well. Definitely want to return to try the rest of their other sandwich options in the future!

On Thursday, Sept. 3, 2026, I visited Epicure with a friend who was in an electric wheel chair…read more Firstly, I commend the Epicure ownership for installing a hand sensory door opener to facilitate customers with special needs. It is drastically lacking around Toronto in general. My serious concerns with the hand sensory door opener, is with the time lapse of the door opening. As my friend was entering Epicure in his electric wheelchair, the door began closing on him as he was only halfway into Epicure. I quickly noticed the door closing on him and rushed to the door to swipe my hand on the sensor to keep the door open until he fully entered. Very shortly after, a senior woman with a walker began entering, and the exact same thing happened to her. It jolted her and she looked unstable from the door closing on her and her walker. It is clearly obvious that the timing on the sensory door opening needs to be adjusted to allow more time for customers with special needs, to be able to enter Epicure "safely" and with dignity. I am respectfully voicing my concerns today, because of the manner in which the owner addressed my concerns above. I spoke with the owner, who identified herself as such, then and there, about the above incidents. Her immediate response to me was, " Well, I don't know how to fix it ". I responded, " Can you please contact the company who installed the hand sensory opener ? " The owner responded, " Oh they are long gone, so just tell your friend to hold the door open as he enters ". I thought to myself, " He is in an electric wheelchair ! Whats wrong with her response ?? There were zero apologies, zero smiles from her, zero greetings. I was not rude to her in addressing the situation. It was very obvious by the look on the owner's face, that she was annoyed by my safety concerns for all customers with special needs, entering Epicure. I feel that, being the owner of Epicure, her first and foremost response, should have been true concern for the safety of her customers. I unfortunately detected zero concern whatsoever. Wow ! Is this how customers should be treated ?? Not in my world. I foresee the possibility of a tragic injury happening because of the lack of concern by the owner of Epicure. Is this what a successful business should reflect ? Profits over safety for its customers ? I personally like Epicure, the neighbourhood go to establishment, but I now wonder whether my choice of a decent neighbourhood establishment has been totally altered by the owner's total disregard for safety concerns and her customer base. I would very much appreciate hearing from other Epicure customers on how they feel about the above situation. Again, I very much like going to Epicure. Thank you.

Service We went for an early dinner at 6:00 PM on Wednesday and were seated within a few minutes. We had 3 different servers serve us throughout the evening, as opposed to 1 like in most other places. Everyone was helpful and friendly. Food I ordered the steak dinner (8oz AAA Alberta NY striploin, shoestring onions, fresh vegetables and garlic mashed potatoes). To my surprise, the plating was well done and very impressive. The steak had more fat pieces than I would have liked and the garlic mashed potatoes was a bit dry. However, the steak was cooked perfectly and the shoestring onions were crispy and delicious.

Shopsy's Deli has been around since 1921 when Harry and Jenny Shopsowitz opened a small ice cream parlor below their tiny apartment on Spadina Avenue, in the heart of Toronto's garment district. Their sons Sam and Izzy built the business, and Sam eventually became known as Canada's 'Corned Beef King.' I first heard about Shopsy's when my first real girlfriend (Miriam) told me stories of family visits to Toronto and eating at their neighbourhood deli. Soon after, my friend Norm and I headed off to Toronto to see the sights and eat at Shopsy's for ourselves. And I have returned periodically to this location over the years. This is a great place to satisfy a craving for a delicious deli sandwich (hold the white bread and mayo), along with some crunchy coleslaw and a nice green pickle on the side. And you get a bit of the attitude thrown in for free. My only real criticism is that this Shopsy's is not really in the "neighbourhood" anymore. I love the Jewish-style delis not just for the food, but for the community energy.
