It was the last weekend in March...and finding ourselves driving through Los Alamos, CA, we had a second opportunity to visit Bob's Well Bread now under the influence of COVID-19. The establishment, was as we had initially found it...thriving! Yes, there was still a line to wait in...only one party at a time inside..to order or select the baked goods from the display cases. Plenty of socially distant seating outside and to our delight, quality of the offerings...just as excellent as we remembered. The order: Croque Madame (5/5), a Reuben Sandwich (5/5), and the BLT Tartine (4/5). For dessert: 3x Chocolate Macaroons (4/5) Beverage: Orange Pellegrino. In addition one Grab and Go Ficielle (Salami and Cheese) Sandwich (4/5). The meal was as delicious, as the repeat visit was satisfying. Will there be a three-peat? Let me start by saying I am a business owner and take pride in my staff being friendly and competent. Went with three other people yesterday and the staff was beyond rude, making faces at each other when we ordered additional items from our initial order. They also forgot two items in our order, and when I inquired about the items them they were rude again saying "okay Jesus" in a derogatory tone. The staff was not very nice nor friendly. The frosting on the cake was that the bread and cookies were harder than getting up on a Monday morning. The cashiers attitude can use an attitude change as We are trying to support local businesses. I think I love traveling to Cambria and Morro Bay so much because we always stop at Bob's Well Bread. The little Italian sandwiches remind me of the sandwiches I used to eat in Italy as a child and I love the fresh baked breads and pastries. Service is usually friendly but it depends who's at the counter. Plenty of seating outside and inside. The pastries are delicious, cookies and croissants are all amazing. Prices are reasonable and the food always fresh and served in a timely manner. I wish they would be closer to my home but that would be dangerous. read more

I finally traveled down to Los Alamos, just to go to Bob's Well Bread Bakery. Luckily, I went on a weekday so there was no line like other reviews mentioned. I was overwhelmed by all of the bread options, so I asked the staff what they recommended. They encouraged me to order the rosemary bread loaf as it was by far the most popular. After eating the entire loaf by myself over the course of a week, I can see why it is the favorite. It was hands-down the best loaf I have ever had! The rosemary flavor was prominent enough that you can taste the herb, but not overwhelming like you were eating a garden. The bread was chewy in the middle and perfectly crunchy on the outside. Over the week, I tried different variations of toast to see what was best and I have to say the basic toast with butter really enhanced the flavors. They were strict on COVID guidelines being very cautious with each customer. They have a decently large outdoor patio space to enjoy the sun and eat your treats. What a great little gem. Stopped for coffee and tried the yogurt with house made granola and a slice of one of their various bread offerings. The coffee was smooth and delicious. The bread was fresh and tasty and the yogurt was creamy and really good. There's a quaint dog friendly outdoor dining area. This review is only about their kouign-amann. I know nothing about anything else they serve. During a recent road trip I was reading the current issue of "Westways", AAA's magazine. I was delighted to see mention of Bob's Well Bread Bakery which specifically touted their kouign-amann. My wife and I are big kouign-amann fans. It's our favorite pastry. So, of course, we had to stop by. Upon first spotting them in the display case I thought, "Uh oh, this doesn't bode well" but we bought a couple, anyway. My initial reaction was born out. They were by far the worst kouign-amann we've ever tasted. I can only think that they decided they needed kouign-amann on the menu in order to be considered cutting-edge, but the baker had never actually eaten one. So, if you're thinking about going to Bob's just to satisfy a kouign-amann craving, do yourself a favor. Don't. read more

A pro tip when going to Bob's on the weekends -- go early, because the lines will be about a 10-15 minute wait. But the wait is worth it! What I loved about Bobs is the mix of classic flavors, and new ideas. Like savory bear claws with spinach and mushroom. Or, making a chocolate chip cookie with a blend of gluten free flours, pecans, and coconut for an incredible chew and chocolately flavor. Their bagels are also delicious -- and with the gravlax platter, a wonderful brunch. I can see why people stop on road trips to get treats from here, it really all is incredible, fresh, and tasty. For dinning in, Bob;s has a casual atmosphere with plenty of outdoor seating. While it can feel loud when there are lots of people, it really is not. From the moment I walked in, I was greeted with the smell of freshly baked goods. The bakery had a wide variety of treats on offer, from classic croissants and to more unique items like savory sandwiches. The prosciutto and Brie sandwich was to die for! The quality of the baked goods was exceptional. I particularly enjoyed the flaky croissants, which were perfectly buttery and crispy on the outside while still soft and chewy on the inside. For whatever reason I didn't have high expectations for Bob's Well Bread, but I love to be surprised. We stopped by for a takeout lunch, and now I can't stop thinking about it. The eggs in a jar are just mind blowing, and is a good reminder of why breakfast foods are my favorite foods. The over easy egg, bacon, cheese, purple potatoes and toasted bread makes for one of the most beautiful dishes I've ever seen. And we had ours in a paper cup. It tastes as good as it looks - easily the best thing I've eaten in 2020. The croissants are very good, but a fresh batch out of the oven would be even better. We had the ham and cheese, pain au chocolat and apple streussel, and we enjoyed the latter the most. I would like to try the bagels next, which look fantastic. We stopped in by in the early afternoon on a Saturday, our first day in Los Alamos and we were pleasantly surprised they still had a few treats still available. We ordered a Pain Au Chocolate and a Sticky Bun to share, both were flakey, fresh, and delicious. Monday morning before heading back to LA we popped in right at 10am to grab some coffee and pastries for the road and it was a different world. We waited in long about 20 minutes and I opted not to get a latte because whomever was supposed to be running the espresso machine was MIA with a stack of drink orders piling up. It seems like a separate register or people just grabbing items to go might be more efficient, the single register for patrons sitting down and grabbing to go was quite a long wait. The food is really incredible, the space fairly small, and the service a bit slow but it's well worth it if you've got the time. read more

My mother in law was visiting us for a few days. She really wanted to try this place but we forgot to check the dates they were closed. As she was walking to the door she realized it was closed and as she turned around she saw a very nice man and she told him they were closed and he said I know I'm Bob and they both had a chuckle. This place used to be 5-star for me, but I had to lower it a notch based on my most recent visit in November 2022. Food and bread here is still incredible, but this place it starting to get overly hyped and crowded which ruins the overall experience. I also don't appreciate the snarky attitude of one of the guys working the counter, which is the last thing you should have to experience after waiting 30 minutes in line. My best advice is to get here before 9am or stop by later in the afternoon if you don't want to deal with the crowds. Our family took a morning trip out to Bob's Well Bread for breakfast after seeing that the bakery was profiled in the AAA magazine that featured recommended places to stop on the Central Coast off HWY 101. Sounds contrived as I have never left a negative Yelp review, but our recent experience appears to counter the majority, but we found that $100 for a few and not particularly fresh (hard) and bland, tasteless baking goods seemed excessive, and even the bread was hard. A paradox for a bakery. Candidly, disappointing and have enjoyed baked goods at significantly less cost, and that presented notably better quality. read more

Bob's ABSOLUTELY lives up to the hype. Due to COVID-19 only one person is allowed into the bakery at a time. They have a system set up where each customer takes a number and when your number is called you can go inside to order. This was a process and it took about an hour for us to order on a Sunday morning, but it was worth every minute of the wait. I ordered the mushroom toast on a biscuit and it was TO DIE FOR. I will be dreaming about this dish until I can return. My boyfriend got a breakfast sandwich and that was also great but the mushroom toast was definitely the star of the show. Bob's Well Bread Bakery sells expensive pastries but once you see the size and taste the freshness of these pastries, you will understand you're getting exactly what you're paying for and why this bakery has appeared on many "best of" lists for bakeries to visit. On a non Covid weekday I'm sure this place is great. Sat outside and literally waiting 90 min to even enter to order. Was hot and many tables offered no shade. Sat down at a table that took forever to be cleaned. When I finally was allowed in the Owner was at the register to take the order and was grumpy and in a hurry to rush me out. Baked goods were lacking and in the end he requested a tip for what I thought was rotten service. After all the only service I got was a grumpy slow moving order taker. And to ask for it......? Isn't that my prerogative? Another 45 min till food came. What I will day and try to end on a positive note is that the food was very good. What a great find! It looks like an old service station. Rustic interior, great sandwiches and a shaded patio next to a large field, makes for a relaxing lunch.
