I've had several items on the menu . This time I had the haddock sandwich with coleslaw and a cup of clam chowder. The chowder is thick , creamy and delicious. The haddock was lightly battered and delicious as well. My fiancé had the lobster stew and crab sandwich on gluten free bun . The lobster stew is also gluten free. She ordered the clam basket with fries and coleslaw for the paltry sum of $38.00. Seriously? What are the clams made of? Gold? Diamonds? She also had dessert. Cheesecake for $9.00. In my opinion, these prices are "highway robbery". I'm so bummed to write this review. I have been coming to Bob's since I was a kid, before the renovation and buildout with the taproom. I have really fond memories eating here and have had many good meals throughout the years. When I visit Maine, eating fried seafood is a treat. I look forward to fried clams *all year* and... they are expensive! The fried clams I got today, although a large portion, were dismal. Shriveled and dry, bready coating, and the worst part filled with grit I had to crunch through. Sadly, some of the worst fried clams I've ever had (I've had a lot). And the fries.... Soggy and firm. Not tasty at all. I got a baked potato as a side - literally just a potato wrapped in foil with zero accoutrements? Not even a pat of butter included. Very disappointing. The cup of clam chowder was less than mediocre. The clams were like rubber, I had to avoid them and focus on the potato in my soup. What's going on here? Had 12 Norumbagas with 2-4 shell bits per oyster. Gained an appreciation for those shuckers at The shop, Freeport oyster house, etc. Got sautéed scallops- about a dozen- perfectly cooked, 10/10. I've been here twice in the past month. I love it so much! All of the fried options are great. The "you choose 4" is so much food for 2 people to split. I love that they have beer flights and the options change - I like to just say "surprise me" and see what I get, never a bad option! Our first time we ate inside and service was quick and friendly. Visited Bob's Seafood for lunch on my recent trip to Maine. We opted to sit outside. Our waitress came to take our orders and it was pretty quick. I got to try the calamari, bacon wrapped scallops, and lobster roll. The calamari had a little too much breading for my liking, but was good otherwise. The bacon wrapped scallops came with a maple dipping sauce, but it was definitely better without it. The lobster roll was a Maine style, served cold and tossed with mayo. I prefer the Connecticut style lobster roll served hot with melted butter. But I was in Maine so i guess it checks out. I'm ok with the 30 min wait, but not with the 20 minutes for the waitress to take our drink order. In her defense she said they gave 5 tables at the same time which is poor management. We've been waiting over an hour for the entrees which we ordered with our drinks. Everything is an upcharge. We ordered steamer for 4 and got one plastic container of water and one butter. The second butter was an upcharge, the blackening of the swordfish is an upcharge. Firstly, there are 2 main seating areas, Bobs Seafood Market side and Tap Room side. It's kind of confusing but they are all the same restaurant. During the good weather, they also seating outside through the Tap Room. The Market side seating is cozy and quieter, the Tap Room side is spacious and noisy as the bar is also in the main part of the restaurant. It may be quieter in the booths, but we were seated right next to the bar. Still, it was well worth it. We got the scallops wrapped in bacon for the appetizer. They were perfect and I mean PERFECT. The bacon was cooked through all the way around, and the scallops were cooked to just the right amount of done, not rubbery at all, they were succulent and yummy. Next time, I might just get these and a salad. The Hub got 10 huge fried shrimp with what tasted like homemade cocktail sauce and homemade crispy fries. He loved it all, including the slaw, which he said was fresh and crispy. I got the fried clams, small, sweet and crispy, yummy. The haddock was really fresh, and the coconut shrimp were delicious. I had to take those home for lunch the next day, though, and they were just as good cold. The salad was a simple side salad but was fresh and appealing. Bob's is a local treasure, and if you are a frequent visitor you'll quickly figure out what works best for you. First, we buy fresh fish and seafood here weekly. They may not have the biggest variety but what they have is always excellent quality. I probably buy salmon once a week here, for instance. As for dining in... the experience can be hit or miss as far as service goes. They know that and they try, but if they get slammed sometimes it throws everything into a tailspin. But the servers are always friendly and helpful, even if the food can get delayed. We try to go off hours and avoid the dinner rush and that usually works out. Ordering pickup also requires some maneuvering. During the summer high season the weren't taking orders that required frying during the dinner rush. Fair enough. We call a few hours ahead of when we want to pick up and schedule it. As for the food... we've tried almost the entire menu at this point. We keep it simple and stick to our favorites: fried haddock sandwich, blackened haddock sandwich, ahi tuna sandwich, seafood chowder (theirs is exceptional, it's all about the kick of black pepper), lobster rolls, and crab rolls. Ordered a quart of full belly Fried Clams and should have known better since it was the summer months. The clams were dripping in grease and something was not right. One of them exploded in my husband's hand and all this brown stuff went everywhere. Discovered this area coming out of the White Mountains heading to the Coast. Couldn't believe our good fortune to find a fun bar and an awesome lobster roll all in the same place. Also, the pricing was phenomenal compared to what we had just paid in another state. My husband loved his blackened haddock reuben. We also had the jalapeno rangoons and, of course, cold beer. Threw in an awesome Bloody Mary packed with horseradish and garlic. Travis the owner's second generation, and you can tell the compassion he has for the area. Highly recommend to stop here. I would love to have written a good review for this place. We went there last night (party of six) and were told it would be an hour plus before we were seated. We were fine with that and went to their outdoor patio and ordered $80 plus worth of drinks. We were eventually seated at a table outside. He said he would have to talk with his manager, but they will figure something out. We were not too thrilled that they seated our group and then said they basically couldn't take care of us. But, we were willing to give them a second chance the next day. We showed up at 4:30 and were seated quickly. We let our waitress know what had happened yesterday and she went to check it out. The gentleman from the previous night came by and the only thing that was offered was that our food would be prioritized. No discount, no offer of a free app., no gift card. It sure didn't seem like our food came out earlier than any other restaurant we've been in lately. We were pretty taken aback by this lack of concern over their customers' experience. From reading some of these reviews, it doesn't sound like we were the first to experience this. As far as the food and the wait staff, there was nothing wrong with that. The food was excellent and our server was very attentive. Management, you have some things to figure out. We were just very disappointed in the whole experience. We ate at Bob's Seafood for the first time as a party of four at about 5:30PM on Thursday, July 8. We arrived at 5:30; however, the wait was about 1 hour quoted and 45 minutes actual. The parking lot was full, as the restaurant was packed. We were seated in the auxiliary dining room, which is located right across from the market counter. Our server was pleasant and very present throughout our meal, assisted by some other employees. I was very pleased with my meal. I had the crab stuffed haddock. It was a generous amount of both haddock and crab, and it came with two sides. I picked the onion rings and the baked potato. I thought that the portion size for the price of that particular entree was very good. Overall, very pleased with my meal! I guess you can't fault a restaurant that follows the name of my father. I was ambivalent between fries and coleslaw for my side, and our waitress, wearing a Bruschi patriot tshirt, said she could do a little half side of coleslaw. Great, I thought. It was inferred that the coleslaw would be a minimal charge, if nothing. The waitress was cool and smart, but ended up actually charging us $3 for the side of cabbage to Up the bill. I had eaten the coleslaw (dad actually said it had a going-bad flavor) and we got talking about other stuff so we didn't mention the coleslaw charge and decided to take it as a loss. But then on our way out, we noticed the plastic small ramekins with coleslaw, just a taste, that was promised to me earlier- this changed my perception. When she said a 'half side' I think she was thinking of this which would've not been three whole dollars for cheap cabbage after paying for an Ok, not wowed, $20+ lobster roll and Shark bites which turned out all right. I don't want to bad mouth someone that I didn't confront there. I just want her to know that we didn't tip on the bill but on service. Let her know that we know that she stabbed us in the back with the unfair $3 coleslaw charge. My mistake for not just sticking with the fries.
