Art on the wall was done from the bartender's photography. Truly a wonderful atmosphere. The small bar manages to feature a variety of local beers to try, from light to dark, so I warmed myself with a delicious oatmeal stout on this frigid New Year evening. After some waffling, I went with my comfort foods: poutine and lobster roll. While we waited for the appetizers, I spied on other tables' fish and chips and fried shrimp - huge portions both. Promising. Poutine was excellent disco fries. Cheese too melty, gravy too light for Quebecois, but who am I to judge? Delicious gravy for sure. My friend loved his haddock Reuben, with the fish taking up the entire sandwich. Sandwiches aren't the biggest compared to the dinner plates, which doesn't surprise me and is why I ordered the poutine. But very tasty. I dessertws with a few fresh oysters just to top off my holiday experience. Verdict: I have found a return spot in Portland.

I ordered the fish and chips: straight from the fryer, nicely crisp, and clearly fresh fish. The fries were the real star--golden, crunchy, and blessedly not soggy. My only note? A touch of salt in the batter would've gone a long way and really lifted the flavor of the fish. Second visit (dinner), same order... very different experience. This time everything landed on the bland side--even the tartar sauce, which is usually the safety net. My guess? Different cook for the dinner crowd. All that said, it wasn't terrible--just inconsistent. There's definite potential here, and when it's good, it's good. I'd happily give it another shot... preferably at lunchtime.

Walking in smells like you walked onto the sea floor of the ocean and that's a wonderful feeling! They have a small, manageable selection of fresh fish. The day we went they had scallop, salmon, lobster, haddock, and some crab cakes and other seafare. They have a small pantry of seasonings, planks, and other seafood cooking items. By the entrance is a freezer of shrimp and other. We got standard fare: scallops and salmon. They had scallop chunks which are cheaper than regular scallops because they're the discards that have been cut up from the descalloping process, but they look, smell, and taste great. The man in charge was so attentive and really seemed knowledgeable about everything. Fun fact, they've been here since 1947! So in 2020, they've been here for over 73 years! Their Facebook is chock full of helpful seafood facts and it's just a really well managed family business. I'm so glad I stopped by and wish I had sooner.

The produce can be hit or miss, but the mushrooms are always prime. Same with the fresh herbs. Massive lengths of garlic chives, absolute trees worth of mint, and lots of other weird and delicious leaves of various sorts. I was able to find plenty of pre-chopped frozen lemongrass, which I now will only buy frozen, becuase it's so fresh tasting and not as much of a pain to prepare. I made a soup where I used a full half cup of the stuff, which is never something I'd have done if I had to chop that by hand! Half the items don't have a price sticker or a sign that states the prices, but when you get to the register, they're happy to do a price check for you so that you know what you're paying. I'm assuming that with such a small physical space, and that variety of stuff, it's hard to constantly keep on top of prices on the shelves. If the cashier were annoyed at being asked the price, I'd not shop here, but I've always had them be happy to tell us the prices with no issues. Seriously though the selection is insane. There's stuff that I'd never imagine I can find easily in New England, but it's right there on the shelf. The noodle variety is great, with plenty of gluten free noodles for those who need it. Plenty of dried mushrooms and tea too!
