Everyone knows I love a good hot dog, and if I'm nearby and you've got it... well, I'm probably gonna try it. Being a beach town and all, you'd expect more than your fair share of hot dog joints, but getting a "Bob Dog" is an Oak island staple for many people. You'll find basics here, as well as some less traditional variations, as well as specials that change now and again. The inside and outside are very no frills, but functional enough for your quick beach break. Service is counter service, and was fine for what I needed it for. We tried a few different hot dogs as a collective, and my experience is that you're likely to be happier with some of the more typical options (like the "all the way" which they call the Oak Island Dog) than you are some of the more esoteric options. I'm always gonna order one all the way as a baseline, and their version was pretty good, though I'd love to see a better bun, maybe buttered and grilled to kick it up a notch. The cole slaw is more coarsely chopped than I would like as well, but overall, good. The other dog I got on this trip had some brisket on it, which sounds good in theory, but in practice I would pass next time and just go for two all the way... or maybe a chili cheese dog. The food is decent enough and it's a cute atmosphere, but if you're going to have dine in tables, serve the food at least on some decent cheap paper plates. They used to actually serve the food in baskets which was cute, but now everything is just served in a brown lunch sack wrapped in paper. Not very appealing for dine in eating... It's fine for takeout but step it up a little bit for dine-in. And look at the photos of these ketchup bottles that are on the tables... Absolutely gross. Coming off the beach, wanted a little something. Opted for the Chubby Dog, a smoked sausage with mustard and kraut. Had the lemonade as it was hyped up on the reviews. Both were delicious. "Dog" served on a hot dog roll with piping hot kraut, bun was steamed. I was tempted to buy another but didn't want to spoil dinner. Lemonade was tasty with just the right combination of sweet/tart. What is wrong with this restaurant is the lack of personality, smiles and overall friendliness. Had an Oak Island dog and a chubby dog with sauerkraut. They seemed a little annoyed when I asked for slaw on the side. My husband thought the sauerkraut was very good. Place was pretty crowded for lunch on a Tuesday during off season. Dogs are good, give them a try. They don't have a ton of choices for dogs, not sure if you can just make up your own combos or not. This would be 5 stars if you felt more welcome at the place. They were really friendly to people they knew, but this was our first time eating there. We loved this little place! It is small, but if you love hotdogs it is worth a stop during your stay! We tried a few different dogs. The Oak Island, Caswell, the Gator, the Taco, and the Tiki. We loved them all! Our favorites were the Taco, Oak Islanf, and Gator. Their fries were fantastic as well. Also if you had a big sweet tooth try their key lime stuffed cookies! The food is great service is kind of slow, often very crowded and almost no seating inside when it's crowded so you will have to eat outside most of the time, but then the flys swarm you and land on your food. Terrible experience if you eat outside but fine if you manage a seat inside. read more

Have been coming to OKI for over 30 years...Bob's Dogs has always been our meeting place prior to gaining access to our beach house. Loved the staff, loved the food and loved the warm welcome when visiting. WOW! Not so much anymore...as we walked in with a group of 10 an adult employee sighed and said..."Ya know it's Saturday people are gonna be coming in... sigh! (Umm..,pretty sure that's why you're in business!). We ordered hot dogs, hamburgers, lemonade and sodas. The hamburger tasted like meatless rubber, lemonade was weak and the hot dogs tasted of poor quality. The corn dog wasn't fresh but cooked in an air fryer and tasted of freezer. The fries were ok but the service was poor and the normally bustling place was pretty much empty when we left. Lastly...the Island Dog with mayo and mango salsa is no longer available. Next year we'll be meeting at another location. Good luck Bobs Dog's...we'll miss you! read more

Our family comes to Oak Island every year in late October or early November. Our favorite place to eat close is Bob's Dogs. We went yesterday but the experience was bad. The cook was visibly upset when she saw pur party size. 8 people. She had an attitude the whole time. Even complained to the girl who was taking our order about something she left put in the kitchen. Our order was wrong. Missing one hotdog and a Hamburger that put chili on it. I went back to tell them we didn't want chili on the burger and was intimidated by the look she gave me. My husband said he was missing a hot dog but I told him not to ask her because she could be more upset. I'm very disappointed that the people hired, could possibly be ruining this great place.
