Ever since I was in college visiting friends at UC Berkeley from the East Coast, some of my fondest memories of Berkeley have been from Boba Ninja. There have been times I was frustrated about work or upset that I was almost hit by a car while riding my motorcycle, and simply nothing was able to fix my mood like an Avocado smoothie from Boba Ninja. I first heard about the Avocado smoothie and Boba Ninja from my friends here at UC Berkeley that told me they have the best fruit blends of any boba place in the area. Boba Ninja did not let me down and I was impressed with both the real blend of avocado that they used as well as the consistent high quality of their tapioca pearls. I used to work at a Kung Fu Tea, and let me tell you from experience, they have some great boba. I usually love this place and it's my back up to Sweetheart cafe but I will not be returning after my recent order. I ordered the popcorn chicken, it's not my first time, but yesterday it was raw! Straight up pink and mushy. I have multiple pictures of DIFFERENT pieces of chicken. This hasn't happened before and it seems in the reviews it's also not a common thing. Customer service is everything in business . Last night the workers had horrible customer service . Not only did they mess up on an order but when asking for a refund for the food that we didn't want I was told they couldn't do it . The boba tea here is pretty cheap and it also tastes good. The sweetness is just right and the boba are nice and chewy. Even if you come here very late at night, the boba isn't soggy and gross. The snacks they serve are also pretty good. I like the potstickers because instead of being pan fried, they are deep fried. It gives the outside an extremely crispy texture while the inside stays juicy and flavorful. The service is really nice and there are always different specials going on. They definitely stay open late for college kids, which is a big plus. However, their drinks didn't really live up to our expectations. I called in to place an order around 8:30 PM & we showed up around 9:15 PM & our drinks and chicken wings were already waiting for us as soon as we arrived. Service was very friendly and quick so I really wanted to like this place. I got the avocado smoothie, which was probably the best out of the four drinks. I could tell that they actually used real avocados instead of the powder mix. My son got the jasmine green milk tea with boba & he said it was just ok. Nothing special, but it wasn't terrible either. I got the fresh mango smoothie for my daughter, but I could tell that there was some type of powder mix as well as the fresh mango because it had a really weird after taste. My daughter drank a little less than half & ended up tossing it. I got the earl grey milk tea for later & it was just ok as well. We got the 10-piece chicken wings, half cumin crispy mix and half x-hot. The cumin wings were actually pretty good, while the x-hot tasted like it was just drenched in Tabasco sauce. I didn't inquire about if I can make sugar adjustments. I should have but it's okay. I felt the drink was quite refreshing, and the sugar content didn't feel like a lot which I was pleasantly surprised about. I know where to go if I want a quick and cheap "snack". I've been eyeing Boba Ninja for awhile but hadn't gone in because I had never seen anyone in there ordering. Well, now I know why. In under 6-8 minutes, my almond milk tea and popcorn chicken were ready for me. I entered the very small hole in the wall shop off Durant, next to Gypsy's and across from King Pin donuts. After quickly scanning the menu, I opted for the popcorn chicken and an almond milk tea without boba. The almond milk tea ($3.45), available in a regular or large size, was ready in 3 min. It tastes like an almond dessert I used to eat in Chinese restaurants except in a more liquified format. As I stood there with my tea, I could hear the crackling of chicken being fried behind the scenes. I was soon handed a bag filled to the brim with hot juicy fried popcorn chicken! The crunchy outside holds a bit of a slight spicy kick. The inside was moist and cooked thoroughly through. I brought it back to the office and shared it with all my coworkers and a few students because there was enough to share! At $5.75, this is an affordable and filling "snack" choice! Honestly the boba here is not good at all. It's definitely not fresh, the texture isn't right, and it just tastes bland. I got the bubble milk tea and the milk tea is fine. I just didn't like the boba. My sister got an earl grey milk tea with red bean and pudding and that was good! I have tried a lot of their boba drinks and they are all pretty good. It is relatively cheaper than other boba places in Berkeley and they have good quality boba (good texture and chewiness)! I would recommend some of their more unique flavors since other boba places tend to have the same kinds. As for their popcorn chicken, it is honestly terrible. It was definitely not popcorn chicken and just pieces of chicken. They do give a large portion but I think I would stick to sweetheart for late night cravings for popcorn chicken.
